According to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com, free agent Nate Clements has been signed or will soon sign with the San Francisco 49ers. The report comes from Thomas Sorrell.

I wonder if this impacts their ability to give a big money deal to Thomas?

Woohoo, if this is legit and it seems to be, I think that is a HUGE factor.

If the Niners only have the bucks to make one of the big two splashes (Thomas, Clements), I'm not surprised it's this one. If the secondary had been in any kind of working order last year they'd have been a lot more competitive.

Hopefully this will take them out of the Thomas sweepstakes.

More importantly it hurts the Bills and the Jets if they were in the mix..

They have the money to do so, but they may feel its unwise to tie up so much money in two players with relatively concurrent contracts.

I know that the Niners are rumored to be signing every top free agent out there, but I really doubt they can realistically sign more than one or two. If they did sign Clement, there is a good chance they can't afford Thomas too. They might have enough money this year, but could choke their cap in a few years.

exactly
they have the most money out of anyone
but that would tie things up
still if this is true, dont count them out entirely
but it def makes it jus a lil less likely that they would get him

and i agree as someone said above that the defensive backs have been this teams biggest weakness
heck they might have won the division last yr
and that seattle pick would be lookin a lot better :(

Adalius Thomas to the Pats even more likely now!!

The Niners have more cap room then we do.

So if we resign Samuel does that mean we cannot sign Thomas?

I think they can sign both.

Resign Samuel?

You mean not trade him?

Pats have an excess of 20m to get the deal done with Thomas.

49ers will very likely offer him more money, whether it be marginal or significant who knows.

But I don't see why he would want to play in San Francisco as opposed to NE.. other than the weather.

It could be snowing championships here.

I still think Samuel could be dealt but yes I meant resigned. If we are capable of resigning Samuel and adding Thomas the 49ers are certainly capable of adding Clements and Thomas. That was my only point because people were saying they couldn't.

I think the difference is Samuels is franchised and only under a one year deal and the 49ers would be taking on multiple years for both. That doesn't mean the 49ers cant take on both and it doesnt mean we cant get both long term as well but it is something to think of.

Why is hurting the Bills and Jets more important than helping the Pats?

i believe he saying more importantly than it helping the 49ers it hurts our division opponents.

True but I think most people would rather see Samuel traded or sign long term. And if he does sign long term he'll cost less under the 2007 salary cap than if he's playing under the tag where he'll cost the full $7.79M.

I am one who would like to see him signed long term. another point to this samuels is not a free agent and although a long term deal would have to be fair I doubt it would be as big as clements.

I think Samuel is waiting to see what Clements contract is and he's going to want the same deal. If SF pays over the top for him it will be ugly.

this thing getting ugly is a big concern to me but I think clements deal is a guide that will be used but Asante has to be willing to do the patriot thing and except a fair but not over the top deal or he wont get the security he wants.
