According to DraftDaddy.com, the Pats in hot pursuit of Briggs and hope that $$$$ will convince him that a 3-4 is not so bad. This is the 2nd time this week that I have read this on this site.

It also mentions that the Pats are in the Moss sweepstakes as well.

This site is very informative, but I am not sure of where the info comes from.

Does DraftDaddy mention that the Bears put the Franchise Tag on Briggs two weeks ago?

True, they tagged him, but it has also been reported that he wants to be traded. It would likley cost the 24 and a big contract.... essentially trading Branch for Briggs with Briggs being a bit more expensive.

I'd rather keep the draft pick.

Assuming we're talking about a trade for a #1, not the two #1, I kind of agree but it would be like trading Branch for Briggs + a little money (remember we offered Branch $6M a year). We'd all take Briggs over Branch in a second.

I don't buy the report since Adam Schefter said this morning that he spoke with all parties involved and Moss getting traded rumors are bogus. So I think this site is probably using second hand information for at least that rumor.

Well, who out there in the mass of draftable bodies will bring to the table what Briggs would, especially at 24 or 28???

No, if it can get done, I'd rather have Briggs, thank you.

Remember, you're not trading a first rounder for Briggs, if indeed that's the theoretical trade. You're trading five years of cheap talented labor and a lot of salary cap space for Briggs.

Fans of teams with very good personnel departments should be opposed to this trade. Fans of teams with personnel departments who make repeatedly bad personnel decisions cough...MattMillen...cough should be in favor.

Given that I'm a Pats fan, I'd rather have five years of the #1 pick and the eight million dollars in cap room to invest elsewhere rather than one year of Briggs.

Yeah, that's always the hidden cost. What upgrades could you not afford because your money is spent elsewhere?

I'm convincedthat is what kills the Redskins. They certainly have gotten enough top players over the years, but there has to be a trickle down effect where the bottom half of starters and most of backups are JAGs. Can you win like that? Not when teams today are geared to taking away the one best thing you do.

IMO.

You can "win like that" provided those high ticket players you bring in perform commensurate to the salary that they are making.

It wasn't the process that the Skins used that contributed to their failure it was the execution of said process. IOW they picked the wrong top players to pay gobbles of free agent $ on.

Is that what you have in mind? One year of Briggs? What is he - 40 years old?

You have a good argument, but it assumes too much, all of which exists in the future, which by definition is unknowable. Yes, if you pass up a player like Briggs you get the extra money to "invest", as you so glibly put it.

Your scenario assumes (there's that damnable word again!) that these "investments" successfully pan out. Whether they pan out to the level of play that Briggs can bring would remain to be seen.

And at 24 or 28, what are the odds, realistically, of drafting an impact linebacker that brings that "jolt" to your defense, not to mention the other team's quarterback? Oh, I know it happens - it just doesn't happen with anything resembling consistency or reliability. In fact, when it does happen, it's usually a result of having stumbled upon it (i.e., the luck factor).

No, we've already seen what Mr. Briggs can bring to the football field. I have much less faith in searching for the next Brain Bosworth.

Nonsense.
It's too risky and secondly your window is too narrow as the many deferred comp contracts come due and you need to cut players you need.
A mix of core players, well compensated, plus draft picks providing value at reasonable cap impact is the way to go.
Show me who has succeeded in winning the SB with a big spending strategy.

Ummmmm, the Colts

Is that Lance "Adalius" Briggs?

Would you imagine this at LB:

Colvin, Briggs, Thomas, Vrabel and, as backup, Bruschi.. wow.

Not going to happen, but just fun to dream about.

Briggs is only 26. Lots of potential ahead. Looks like he would play ILB.http://www.tsn.ca/nfl/teams/players/bio/?id=4076&hubname=nfl-bears

He would be an injection of youth to the NE LB corps and could step in and play tomorrow. Look at NE's past history of success at this position. FA's: Colvin; Vrable; Seau; Phifer; Cox.

Maybe some wiz kid draft pick could come in and learn the system right away and have an impact, but what are those odds?

Adalius Thomas will be 30 too, if that deal goes down.

I'm not worried about Briggs age. I'm worried that if he's signed his tender (I don't know if he has), he has a valid one-year deal for 8.something. It seems that we're assuming that Thomas will sign a long term deal if we trade for him. If we do, it won't come cheap, since he's set up for UFA next year.

if we're close to getting thomas, then i'd say keep #24 and 28

Can we sign both Briggs AND Thomas?

=D
