Man...UMass is awful

I was at the Bentley/Mercyhurst game yesterday and I think we had a bigger crowd. Time for UMass to give the keys to the younger QB AJ Doyle and let him develop.

UMASS is my alma mater. Not only that, but I was in the color guard for 4 years (part of the marching band). We were okay, not great, when I went there and at least have always been competitive. It makes me sad that they have been so bad these last few years. They are trying to move up in football importance and are building a new stadium, but the program is suffering terribly. I hope they can recover from the rep they are now being tagged with. I don't blame them for trying to cash in on the popularity of football. They are a huge school and should be able to field a competitive team. Why are these transition years so bad? Bad coaching? No recruiting? Games too far from the school? Probably a combo of all. Games were always packed to the gills when I was there. They should bus students down to Gillette during this transition time. Hopefully once the new stadium is finished they will clean house and start over with a brand new program.

Losing 24-14 to a visiting Maine team??? (I never knew they had football in Maine)

Relying on Ian to bring his entire family to double the home game attendance????

Someone is not doing their job there.

Agreed. They moved up to a higher conference (don't ask me which one, I am not a college football fan), yet they lose to Maine, an old rival they used to beat. They seem to be relying on alumni to come to the games while they are at Gillette, but they put a terrible product on the field, so of course nobody comes. My sister is also a UMASS alum. She and a bunch of friends took their families last year. Their experience was similar to Ian's, so they won't be going back. Sad. They need a new AD and a new recruiter. Not sure what is going on.

About the size crowd at a Tufts game

So roughly half the size of a Williams game?

The Ephman rank 6th nationwide in DIII attendence, so there are college football fans in New England.

Pretty sure UMass isn't the best place to get a real saturday college football experience :p

take the trip down to Rutgers/Penn State (for a real CFB experience in the north east). Nothing like a big SEC game though.

Speaking of, Jeff Driskell SUCKS! Such a disappointing loss yesterday. To top it all off, I was at a bar with a lot of Hurricane fans.

UMass logic:
We can barely compete in our own division, so lets move up to an even tougher one!

Lets have all our home games 90 minutes away on saturday mornings! I'm sure the students will be super excited and come!

Not sure the Harvard basketball players that got caught cheating had that message, though.

Future hedge fund managers are groomed outside the classroom too.

College football is awful in general.

I don't need to spend my time watching amateur football.

Sad that UMass is more interested in creating memories for its alumni and not the student body.
What is the master plan...building a stadium in Amherst??

They're just not ready for primetime, and were unwise to promote themselves into the big leagues.

You never knew they had football at Maine? If you lived in a place like Alabama or Texas then I'd be inclined to believe you, but....seriously....that's just dumb. They are certainly not a juggernaut, but they have had a couple of good teams over the years and have put a fair number of guys(players & coaches) into the NFL, including the New England Patriots. Maybe you haven't noticed, but they're pretty legit this year as well. They put up a good fight at Northwestern this year.

Idk if putting up a good fight against Northwestern is really a good example

I know I am late to the conversation, but, Maine plays in the CAA basically the SEC of 1AA football. They had been very good over the last 3-4 years. Umass is trying to move up. It will take some time. But JMU, UNH, Delaware, Townson, Richmond etc...all recruit the best of the best that either can't make the D1 schools grade wise or choose a lesser school to play sooner. UMass is basically the worst of the worst choices for the D1 football player at this point. Hell those guys would probably get better looks from the NFL in the majority of schools in the CAA than at UMass.
