What we learned Thursday: Broncos chasing 2007 Pats - NFL.com

Denver's offense is borderline unfair with Welker and Julius Thomas as mismatches exploiting single coverage. The Ravens' secondary won't be the only one embarrassed as Peyton Manning chases the 2007 New England Patriots' record of 589 points.

I think 1 game against a team with a completely turned over secondary is jumping the gun a bit.

28 Yr. old Brady | 37 Yr. old Manning
Moss | Thomas
Stallworth | Decker
27 Yr. old Welker | 32 Yr. old Welker

They have a lot of nice players but it is not even close to what we had in 2007, it is not even as good as what Aaron Rodgers had in GB back in 2011 with Jennings, Nelson, Driver, Jones, Cobb and Finely

Its not out of the question. They play the Raiders twice so that alone will account for 400 points.

Good for them. I hope they get all the love and attention from the media too. Most everyone on here knows that it doesn't mean a damn thing if you don't win it all.

Not to demean the Broncos (PM is one of the 15 greatest qbs ever and their receiver core is one of the best the league has seen in the last decade or so) but I'm fascinated that Denver is getting this ludicrous amount of hype, yet I haven't seen mediot suggest that maybe, just maybe the game was more of a demonstration of Baltimore's regression rather than the Broncos being unstoppable.

I would love nothing more than to see the Broncos go 16-0 and then lose to us in the postseason on our way to a Super Bowl.

**** the regular season, **** stats, **** records. We've done that **** for the last 6 seasons and it's gotten us **** all.

Reminds me of the 24 hr hype the colts got with harrison/wayne/james/clark of winning it every year.

I think the comparisons are fair, honestly it's what came to my mind watching last night. Also, you can't buy into the idea that Brady isn't fading with age if you're going to bring up Manning's age difference as a disqualifier.

Moss>Thomas BUT he's also got Welker who imo is probably at least 85-90% of what he was in 2007, Decker who is a very good WR that had a bad game, Julius Thomas who looks like an emerging stud TE and Ronnie Hillman. Just kidding, Ronnie Hillman sucks, but then again we had Maroney so it's kind of a wash there. I think you can probably say the defenses are comparable also. Plus the AFC is probably around the weakest it's been in the last decade.

My only question is Manning's arm strength which imo is noticeably diminished. He is such a cerebral QB that he can overcome it to a certain extent but there were a lot of wounded ducks last night and throws >20 yards in the cold in November and December are going to be a bit of a struggle which is imo why they pushed for Welker on top of Decker. We'll see but I certainly don't have my jimmies rustled over the comparisons.

How long until he hangs Welker out to dry like he did with Austin Collie?

And that was when his arm was still 100 percent. Nowadays his arm is at best 70-75 percent of what it use to be.

This is amazing. The 07 Patriots were often winning by 35-40 points in the second quarter. I believe they had almost 50 points before halftime against Miami, Buffalo and Washington.

I must have watched a different game. I know what the final score was, but I also know the Broncos were scoreless after the first quarter and had 14 at halftime. Had that Welker drop been challenged, it is very possible the Broncos would have had 14 points midway through the third quarter. Obviously it's admirable that the Broncos had the agility to keep pounding away against a defeated Ravens defense (speaking of which, had this been the Pats, it would have the evil, showboating Brady and Belichick), but most of these points were piled on against a gassed defense; Flacco could not get them a first down to save his life and give them some rest. One TD was the result of a turnover at the ten yard line and another was a screen pass breakaway with minutes left in blowout game.

This is not exactly the way I remember the 07 Patriots and 11 Packers. Those teams would put games away before half way through the first quarter- that's how good they were. I really think had the Ravens offense put together a decent drive in the third quarter, that game is probably 31-24 Denver.

All the props in the world to Manning- he's unbelievable. But sometimes the final statline appears more dominant than the actual game. I would say the Broncos dominated offensively from midway through the third quarter onwards, but before that, they looked to have an average offense.

well, he didn't with Decker at all last season and he never really did with any other guy so I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that this is an Austin Collie problem and not a legit criticism. Welker's taken some vicious hits taking passes from Brady btw, he probably already isn't in for a fun retirement but some guys have glass jaws or get unlucky while others get ktfo or find themselves in unfortunate situations, that's the nature of the game imo.

Ravens should have beaten the Pats in 2007 if not for Rex Ryan

btw, the pats average margin of victory in 2007 was 18pts. They had some incredible blowouts but they also played some close games too.

records are made to be broken and if they do it im fine with that, and for all the pats fans kinda pissed cause Peyton is getting all this attention wait and see how much they will be ball washing Brady if he throws for 300 with 3 TD's with all rookie WR's and the same for Brees when he throws for 6000 yards this season

Let them keep chasing. At least the 2007 Patriots got to the big dance. The Broncos will probably go one and done again in the playoffs.

I guess everyone should just concede the Lombardi to the Broncos (sigh).

I can't wait until Peyton Manning extends his record to 9 one and dones in post season with top seeded teams . I wonder what flaming hoops his fans are going to have to jump through to explain it away this time just like they do every time.

The more the media says its a lock for them the more pressure they will be under.

Well it's football season (biggest/most popular sport in America) and we have too many sports opinion writers (I dare not call them reporters anymore...i need a better term) who are being told to write something and there's only been 1 game so far this season.

It will slow down when the rest of us get to play some games. Or, it will grow into a news monster and cause quite a bit more pressure on Denver (not that PM or WW would cave to it).

Haha I thought people here were overreacting when complaining about the Broncos love but I don't blame anyone now. Let's forget the fact that it's only been one game. Even if you rank their weapons against ours back then (which on offense is fair I'll admit) they are completely ignoring the fact that Manning nearing 40 and post neck injury, while still very good he is not on the same dimension as Brady in '07. Let's see how he holds up one more year towards the end, it's hard enough to support that forehead with a healthy neck.

Also their soft defense and lack of pass rush will keep them on the field alot this year, Manning will be on the sidelines alot.
