The New York Jets announced the signing of wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery to a contract extension. The announcement was made by Jets’ General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.

Cotchery was a guy I thought we were going to take the year he came out. Good call on Salad-Boy's part.

I think the Pats have to re-think trying to get every nickle of value out of the rookie contract and take a long term view. If they had given a player like Samuel, Graham, or Branch a raise in years 3 and 4 of their rookie deals in exchange for long term security they could have locked them up for cheaper money than when they came due (or before due in Branch's case).

I know it goes against their philosophy on restructuring, minus the real franchise guys like Brady and Seymour, because they are afraid to open the flood gates but they should be able to figure out a middle ground solution.

They did have a long-term view with Vrabel, Light, Koppen, Wright and others. But I do see your point re: rookie deals.

Everlong, the one guy on that list that I think they could have legitimately extended to a long term deal would have been Graham, but even his case is questionable because of his injuries in the past. Branch never proved himself worthy of a huge extension, and signing him to one while there was little cap space, and there were concerns over his health and production would have been shortsighted. They did try to extend him (he wasn't a free agent), and they tried to do so at a time when he proved his value and showed he could stay healthy. Samuel, with the exception of this past year, never showed he was anything more than a serviceable starter, or a competent nickel. Hell, in '05 he didn't even have a very good year.

I think they could have been wise to extend Givens before '05, but I don't know of many other cases where the cost of an extension represented value, or did much to improve the team long down the road.

Ty Warren, someone who has shown that he is an excellent starter and durable, is a potential target of an extension. They know what they are doing, and it is much easier for us to sit here after the fact and say "well, they shoulda done this..."

Hindsight is 20/20, of course.

Okay did the Jets rip up the last year of his contract, or is this truly an EXTENSION??? Because that is exactly what we tried to do with Branch, but he did not want to honor the last year of his contract, and that is where the FO held firm, they were not going to set a precedent and rip up a valid contract. They were more than willing to extend Branch at a VERY good increase in pay, just not until his already existing contract was up.

I hope they extend Warren this year.

The thing is with Branch, Samuel, Givens, and Graham while they hadn't reached pro bowl level earlier in their deals you could see the potential there.

So instead of paying them 500k-1.25M in years 3-4 you pay them 2-2.5 but then you get them extended 3 years for 3-4M in place of losing them when they are getting 6M+/year.

I like Cotchery a lot. Good signing I'm guessing.

Yeah, it's the time of year for the junior GMs.

Sad part is I think free agency becomes less relevant every year. Notice how many players are being locked up. Teamsare getting smart.

I didn't see anybody saying go spend 11M on Thomas or any other type of FA drama. The discussion was about re-upping your own players in advance as a strategy to save money long term and retain the core. In some instances that's not going to be possible. The player is going to want to wait and break the bank but I don't think a discussion about this strategy is "drama".

It's hard to argue with the way BB/SP do business because of their track record but if it's done in a constructive manner that's what the site is for. People seem to fall into two groups.
