The 2014 Mock draft Thread.

After viewing the current roster for the 2013-14 New England Patriots, I consider the following positional priorities:

1. Cornerback (Aqib Talib will be an unrestricted free agent)
2. Defensive Tackle (No Brainer)
3. Strong Safety (Steve Gregory, Adrian Wilson .... no thanks!)
4. Offensive Center (no worthy backups currently on the roster)
5. Outside Linebacker (Brandon Spikes will be an unrestricted free agent)
6. Cornerback or Defensive Tackle (a double dip is in order)
7. Running Back (LeGarrette Blount will be an unrestricted free agent)

Comment: With regard to outside linebacker, Dont'a Hightower moves to middle linebacker while Jamie Collins moves to strong side outside linebacker. Steve Beauharnais backs up at middle linebacker especially if Dane Fletcher departs via unrestricted free agency. Jamie Collins will need competition for the strong side outside linebacker position.

P.S. Marquice Cole sucks at cornerback

2014 early mock

1st round pick Ra'shede Hagemenn DT
2nd Round pick Darqueze Dennard CB
3rd Round pick Scott Crichton DE
4th Round Pick Jace Amaro TE
5th round pick Bryn Renner QB
6th round pick Aaron Donald/Caraun Reid DT
7th round pick high ceiling player

I'd love to get another 2nd or 3rd for Mallett and maybe get Lemarcus Joyner, Tyler Larsen or Deandre Coleman

Preliminary mock draft, havn't decided on a 1st rounder, round projections from Walter Football for the most part

1 ??
2 Henry Anderson, DE/DT, Stanford
Big & tall and he gets after the QB
3 Bennett Jackson, CB, Notre Dame
Has the size and speed to be a number 1 CB and played well on last year's powerhouse defense that went to the National Championship.
4 Trey Millard, FB, Oklahoma
Versatile fullback that blocks, runs and catches the football. He has a 5.4-yards per carry average, and had 30 receptions last year for 337 yards and 4 TDs
5 Karlos Williams, SS, Florida State
6'1" 223 pounds, what's not to like about his size? Fast and hard hitting he also made the game winning INT in last years ACC Championship Game
6 Devin Gardner, QB, Michigan
A sixth round QB out of Michigan? What's not to like? Interesting developmental prospect also played WR before replacing Shoelace.
7 Chris Boswell, K, Rice
Led the nation with 6 FG over 50 yards while only missing two, follows this years move of replacing Mesko with Allen

“I have confidence that [Gostkowski]’s one of the best kickers in the league,” Belichick said.

We know he's willing to carry Gostkowski's $3.4M cap hit for this season. It's more likely that Gostkowski gets signed to an extension than it is that he gets cut.

I think Ghost is very good at what he does, I also think Mesko is very good at what he does.

What positions do we all agree are positions of needs? I'd say, not in order, QB, TE, RG/C, DT, LB, S, CB

R2. Ryan Shazier, LB, Ohio State
R3. Arthur Lynch, TE, UGA
R4. Aaron Murray, QB, UGA
R5. Deion Belue, CB, Bama
R6. John Urschel, OG, Penn State
R7. Jeremy Deering, FS, Rutgers
Undrafted Free Agents: Jordan Hall, WR/RB, Ohio State; Josh Mauro, DE, Stanford; Matt Hall, OT, Belhaven; Prince Tyson-Gulley, RB, Syracuse; T.J. Jones, WR, Notre Dame, Jamill Merell, DE, Rutgers, Connor Shaw, QB, South Carolina; Tom Savage, QB, Pittsburgh; Eric Ward, WR, Texas Tech...Any questions on any of my selections or UDFA's please ask

TE would be nice but not a strict need, we still have GRONK and Sudfeld looks like he'll be a decent back up at the minimum. QB isn't a big deal yet, Brady and Mallet both under contract, no QB in the first 4 rounds next year. If Cannon is at G and Wendel is re-signed no big need there either. DT is a need, DE potentially too. As for S we have some young players that we should wait and see on this season. LB isn't a need with Mayo Hightower and Collins locked up even if Spikes walks, CB is yet to be seen, but you can never have too many good DBs.

Unless, of course, there's another Ryan Mallett who takes a dive. . . .

With the first week of college football just about out of the way I might as well get my first mock draft of the season going to. This is of course very early and I've only seen a limited number of players so far.

Trade 1st for early 2nd and 4th (I really just needed an extra mid round pick to fit my guys in).

* Number in bracket is NFL Draft Scout Ranking

2a. Ra'Shede Hagemann- Minnesota -6'6" 312lbs (43)
20121204_kkt_bl2_4860_standard_3520_zps34262018.jpg

DT is obviously a huge need right now and should be a draft priority. Hagemann is an absolute freak of an athlete (ranked #2 on the freaks list by Bruce Feldman) and has the potential to be a top 5 pick if he develops. Right now he is a 2nd rounder and I'm hoping he doesn't develop too quickly this season.

2b.DT- Deandre Coleman- Cal- 6'5" 315lb (88)
cal_20dance_20team_2012-1020_1519052_std.0_standard_709.0.jpg

I liked my big, long, athletic DT earlier in round two so much I thought I would grab another. Like manx said, he is a good athlete, huge upside and has the skills to two-gap. What I like about this pair of DTs along with Armstead is size, length, athleticism and scheme versatility. Whether its 4-3 or 3-4, 1-gap, 2-gap or my favorite 4-3 under. These two would help stop the run, rush the passer, clog up passing lanes with their length and really offer a huge amount of defensive versatility, especially with #75 getting up there in age.

3. C- Travis Swanson- Arkansas- 6'4" 320lbs (66 could maybe swap positions with Coleman)
101001AMARKRT-0098_zpsddcc984d.jpg

Interior O-line could be another need although I hope we do re-sign Wendell. Swanson is arguably the top C in the 2014 draft (although recent history has the top C entering the year dropping like a rock before the draft) and is another guy I like from the athletic freak list.

While he has great movement skills, his best asset at the moment is probably his pass protection, which could make him one of the better C's in the NFL if he can continue to develop the other parts of his game.

4a. FB- Trey Millard- Oklahoma- 6'2" 250lbs (104)
rn_texas_oklahoma_ms_10_zps55a3fe12.jpg

I will say this right now, Trey Millard is one of the 10 best players in college football. He is versatile, athletic and a flat out beast. While it may be impossible to find a replacement for Aaron Hernandez, Millard would do a fantastic job and contribute in even more ways. He is a fantastic lead blocking FB, he can run the ball, catch it out of the backfield, line up at TE and is Oklahoma's best special teams player. He is actually Oklahoma's best player period. He is a combo FB/RB/HB/TE and special teamer that offers so much value I would draft him as high as round 2, he is that good.

4b. CB- Kyle Fuller- Virginia Tech- 6'0" 190lbs (142)
kf_1316035980_zps30a6ad0e.jpg

Fuller was supposed to be one of the best CB's in college football in 2012 but he never really developed last season. The talent is still there and I think he could break out in 2013 and force himself into the top 2 rounds. He has good size, athleticism and coverage ability that should make him at least a solid NFL CB with the potential for more.

5. OT- Cornelius Lucas- Kansas State- 6'8" 328lbs (146)
hi-res-6920990_display_image_zps00f1d38f.jpg

When I was watching tape I couldn't help but notice Lucas. Maybe its because the guy is freakin' huge, but I came away impressed. Lucas has great length, is a good athlete, is excellent in pass protection and does a good job moving his feet and getting to the second level. He still has a lot of technique work to do and he needs to improve his run blocking but I think he has huge upside. I would also like to see him get a bit 'meaner' and finish his block, especially drive blocking where he seems a bit passive. Unique size and skillset though, especially as a pass blocker and well worth a shot in the 4th/5th round.

6. QB- Keith Price- Washington- 6'1" 202lbs (277)
KeithPrice_zps324068e2.jpg

I see him as a poor mans Teddy Bridgewater and not just because of the similar appearance. The more I watch the more I really like Price as a developmental guy that has a chance to be really good. He has a good but not quite great arm (although I think he can continue to improve that), he is a great athlete and excellent runner, but don't be fooled, he is a pure pocket QB. I really like the way he moves around the pocket, keeps his eyes down field and uses his athleticism to keep plays alive. He throws the ball vertically down the field well, particularly down the seams and is especially good off play action.

He still has some areas to improve and some technique issues to work through but I really like his skill set. He is undersized which will scare some teams off but it doesn't really concern me. From a comparison standpoint to me he looks like a combination of Bridgewater in the pocket (although he doesn't quite have the same arm) and Russel Wilson running and throwing on the run. I think Price is poised for a huge year and could easy push himself up to being one of the top QB's in the draft.

7th- Lottery Ticket
Just take a high ceiling guy and hope to strike gold.

I love it, just wish there was some way to get Colt Lyerla in the 2nd.

This wouldn't happen to be a Johnny somebody would it? :bricks:

I'm not being specific. I mean simply "A QB widely-recognized as having first-round talent, whom BB loves, who inexplicably falls into the middle rounds."

Also, anyone guessing if Pats get any comp picks or anything in Mallett trade? Check out my mock on page 3

I like Kyle Fuller as well. His stock is on the rise though after the Bama game and he'll likely be a 2nd round pick eventually if not higher.

Dri Archer is electric, running, kick returns and receiving. I want him.

Don't think Mallett has any value outside of a late round pick at this point; not expecting him to go anywhere.

Miguel is estimating that the Pats will receive two 6th round comp picks in 2014. Lost 4 qualifying free agents -- Welker, Thomas, Chung, and Woodhead. Signed 2 -- Amendola and Svitek. Amendola will offset Welker. Anticipating Svitek will offset Woodhead, but Svitek's contract is so low that it's possible he might not reach the threshold of a qualifying free agent at all. If that's the case, the Pats may receive a 3rd comp pick, likely a 7th rounder.

That sounds about right: looking at last year, contracts averaging $3M-$4M a year got comp 6s, so Chung(!) and Thomas should land 6s, while Woodhead, if Svitek doesn't cancel him out, will bring a 7.

[Svitek is a bit of a wildcard: his salary is low enough that he might not qualify, but apparently he has enough incentives that he might.]
