Not madness at all. The Super teams are playing in front of 50-80k people 6-8 games/month (league play/tournaments/friendlies/exhibitions) over 9 months. Figure in world TV revenues and marketing. The beauty of soccer outside the US is that there is virtually no competition for sports dollars. Frankly, I am surprised the bigs like Messi and Ronaldo don't earn more than their $17-18 mill salaries considering their impact on the field...equally as important as the impact QB who plays 16 games...not 40.

And I mean probably only 5 k an appearance. Higher when it comes to the big tournaments though.

He is an incredibly overrated player. He has had 1 good season, one great season. Ronaldo had like 5 years in the league doing much better than he did before he got the same deal. It's a bit like the Joe Flacco deal, he's done so great this last year that they are stupid enough to pay megabucks for him.

They get little to nothing for playing internationally, which always causes controversy when a player gets a major injury playing for his national team.

Real Madrid's business model is spend the money because we have it. It's an egregious money spend given the similar players on Real's roster.

Tottenham has made out like bandits in this deal (well apart from Chelsea popping in and signing Willian from under their noses).

It will be interesting to see how Bale handles not being the man. Tottenham ran everything through him. I do wonder though if Real plans on selling Ronaldo back to Manchester United. That would offset some of Bale's purchase cost.

Well for one thing, Bale is only 24, and has been utterly dominant whenever he's been healthy. Flacco is 28 and is average by every metric. His season last year is so far beyond anything Flacco has ever done it's not even close. Bale may not live up to the transfer fee, but that analogy is indefensible. And I am not a Spurs or RM fan at all.

Bale has been a very good player for a few years now. He has been Spurs difference maker since the 2010/11 season and has got better and better since then.

I don't believe he is worth the price tag he had. However saying he had one good season is just wrong.

I disagree. I do think Bale is world class, but certainly not worth that money.
Ozil, DiMaria and Modric are gone I would say.
Bale has been in great form for the past 3 seasons, and will certainly get a better return from his dives in Spain.

He's no Ronaldo in the skill stakes.

Then fortunately there is a salary cap. This team, at first glance, sounds like the embodiment of Jerry Jones or Daniel Snyder. I'd hate to see what would happen if Jerry Jones and Daniel Snyder were unrestrained like this (for those that hate the salary cap or think there should be huge singular contracts like this in the NFL, take it up with the NFLPA). Little doubt in my mind the Skins and Cowboys would all of a sudden start winning the SB more frequently, and that wouldn't be based on having better leadership/organizations.

If RM sells Ronaldo because of Bale, that would be pure madness. From what I've read, they're going to offload Ozil, diMaria, and possibly Benzema. To me, that's crazy too because those three players arguably are the same quality player as Bale.

To make an analogy it's like if we were to trade for Sean Lee, and then get rid of Mayo, Spikes, and Ninko to make cap room.

Not to say that Bale = Sean Lee or the three Patriot players = the three RM players I mentioned.
