Patriots have informed TE Daniel Fells that he will be released, per source. Fells' presence late in game Thursday was indication of this.

For most posters, it has been Fells or Hooman from the beginning of the off-season. Of course, perhaps the team hopes to sign Fells or Ballard after Game One.

Ballard Cut

Little surprised by this

This means they'll keep Gronkowski on the active roster and he'll be back before week 7. Good news for the offense.

Re: Ballard Cut

Huge shock! Will be very disappointed if it's a move to keep Tebow instead of him.

2 TEs down sounds good for Gronk's health, though.

Re: Ballard Cut

Considering Fells was just cut too, that probably bods well for a coming gronk sighting sooner, rather then later. As for Ballard...... Shame. I just don't think he's all the way back from injury. He's not the same player he was before injury and may never be. Shame.

Re: Ballard Cut

Wow...well I guess BB's steal/calculated risk on Ballard didnt work out afterall.....this guy's knee looked like junk out there....best of luck to him in the future

Re: Ballard Cut

So Injured Gronk, Sudfeld, and Hooman are the top 3 TEs.

No way Pats go into season with this group. A Trade / Signing is coming.

Re: Ballard Cut

Hooman sucks too...Fells wasn't that bad.

Not surprised by this one....this guy has been a shadow of the player he was in Denver. Somehow as soon as he got off the plane ib Boston....his hands turned to stone....;) Not the greatest blocker either......good luck to him

Re: Ballard Cut

As had been reported frequently, Ballard really looked slow & stiff at the two practices I went to. Also tried to watch him a bit in the 3rd and 4th preseason game and thought he was really laboring. I wonder if the play in the fourth quarter where he kind of gave up on Tebow's scramble might have been the last straw for him. Micro fracture surgery = much longer rehab than run-of-the-mill ACL repair.

I wonder if this might open the door for Develin making the roster?

Re: Ballard Cut

Absolutely expect us to pick up someone from final cutdowns now.

Re: Ballard Cut

Bummer about Ballard.

Not surprising the legend of Ballard was severely overblown, he been in the league since the start of 2010 and has played in 14 regular season games over those 3 season, he had 1 good season with the Giants in 2011, and then suffered a devastating knee injury that NBA players like Penny Hardaway, Tracey McGrady and so many other star players weren’t able to overcome.

I wish him luck, seems like a nice guy and hard worker, he just caught a tough break with the microfracture surgery.

Re: Ballard Cut

We already have an omnibus thread for cuts.

Re: Ballard Cut

So much for that 'tons of depth at TE' crap that was going around a week ago. The current depth chart isn't terrible if Gronk comes back by week 3 (since, you know, Gronk's the best TE in the league), but for now I expect Sudfeld to play every down.

'You know who' is making this team

With Gronkowski presumably not going to be ready to play in week one I would have to assume that the Patriots have already worked out a deal to sign another TE. It wouldn't make much sense to get rid of two TE before doing so, and it wouldn't make much sense to go the first few games with just two TE.

He had 19 catches his one season in Denver. He had a 41 catch season (at 9.5 yards per catch, not exactly stretching the field) with the Rams in 2010, but he was never particularly good.
