Interesting, probably with special teams in mind:

A prospect to keep an eye on..#SMU LB Ja'Gared Davis who was claimed by the #Patriots off waivers from the Texans. Explosive lower body and exceptional striking ability. Some maturity issues, but skilled.

Nice youtube in the link of this guy tracking down QBs and running backs in college. He can fly and brings a 2X4 when he arrives. SMU used him as an edge pass rusher in a flattened out 3-4.

Obviously his football speed must be good. His best 40 yard time was 4.78, rather slowfor a linebacker.

Off topic, but was there some sort of contest 20-30 years ago I didn't know about to come up the strangest names possible ? People are just making up names nowadays. Ja'Gared ? I mean, really, that's friggen unbelieveable. It seems like apostrophe's were very popular 20-25 years ago. Dont'a, Ja'Gared, Da'Rick, geez. Names like Keyshawn and Shaquille almost sound normal compared to some of these new names.

My mom worked in an alternative school for girls at one point in her life back in the late 90's, early 2000's. She said she saw names like Abcde (pronounced "Absidee") and Shi'Thead (pronounced "Shi-Theed").

Good god. WTF ! There is some famous 13 or 14 year old basketball player on YouTube, his first name is Seventh. Look it up, I **** you not. I guess his parents ran out of names after the first 6 kids. Reminds me of when George in Seinfeld wanted to name a kid Seven.

Seems that a OLB is the last thing the Patriots should be searching for on the waiver wire. DT and CB look like much bigger needs.

as long as he has no interest in taking down an opposing qb he should have a shot at making the team.

Wow

Davis is a short, thick outside linebacker with excellent athletic ability, play speed and lateral agility to develop for the position in the NFL. Davis is realistically a weak-side linebacker only. Overall, he deserves strong sixth-round draft consideration by a 4-3 team looking for a back-up weak-side linebacker. Davis will have to be a core contributor on special teams to stay on a roster.

looks like more competition on the back end, largely for STs.

Davis seems like a good pickup who could go to the Practice Squad or even win the last LB/ST roster spot over Beauharnais, Rivera, and Tarpinian.

He seem a decent prospect as a coverage linebacker.

He's gonna have to make 3 or 4 spectacular tackles on special teams tonight to make the team. This will be his one and only shot, unless they sneak him onto the Practice Squad.

I think he's more of a pass rusher than a coverage guy.

Barkevious Mingo.

That's all I gotta say.

Looks slow and undersized to me. His game speed did look a bit faster than his 40 speed, but unless he's bulked up considerably from his combine weight (238), I'm not seeing where he fits on a pro defense. Maybe he's a wrecking crew on ST, and can go and usurp Tarpinian's old spot.

The pressure on Ja (the new newcomer) but also to the Pat players on the margins. And on the coaching staff to read just what's going on in this fluid situation.

As to his name... it may be different but who cares, because it does have as much rhythm as most names And I think of these names as a tribute in a way to the independence of black mothers--and to those of their partners who accept these chosen or suggested names.

That is LEGEN (wait for it) DARY ! I thought perhaps Mr. Mingo was born in a foreign country, and I was going to give his mama a break, but no, he was born here right in the ole USA. Barkevious is my new favorite name. I think babie's mamas were going through a Roman phase while coming up with that one. I've seen other Roman type names besides Barkevious.

Some posters will be pleased that "jag" is right there in the name.
