I had some time to waste, so why not?

I've used both NFL Draft Scout and my own judgement to determine a players value and tried to take needs into account as they presently seem.

My first Mock

Round One

Zack Martin, OT/OG, Notre Dame

notre-dame-7th.jpg

Originally I had Colt Lyerla here but as this mock continued, two things happened. Firstly I found a potential later round prospect that matches up with Lyerla well. and secondly, I hadn't mocked an OG which is a position at which we need to add some youth.

Martin strikes me as an ideal Patriot interior lineman. He plays as a college OT but at 6-4, perhaps lacks the length to be a pro LT. He can maul with the best of them but has impressively quick feet. Watching him, I can easily imagine him playing on our OL.

Round Two

DeAndre Coleman, DT, California

cal_20dance_20team_2012-1020_1519052_std.0_standard_709.0.jpg

At 6-4, 320, Coleman fits the BB mould very nicely. He might not be elite athletically, but his athleticism is a plus and combines excellently with his big upside strength. A genuine two-gap capable DT or 3-4 DE.

Round Three

Qua Cox, CB, Jackson State

bildeCAUJRQAE.jpg

An exciting talent. Not great size at 5-11, 185, but Cox has genuine shutdown corner capabilities. I've only seen two games worth of tape (and that's only because I've gone looking), but from what I've seen Cox has the skillset that will get the amateur draft world salivating. I'm convinced this is a name you will hear more and more of as the upcoming season progresses.

Round Four

Bryn Renner, QB, UNC

Bryn+Renner+North+Carolina+v+Georgia+Tech+wB2biDh0ICll.jpg

I'm a believer in preparing for Brady's ultimate departure and that to do so, the Patriots must be consider drafting a QB every year until they find one that they can trust to be the future franchise QB. There are other QBs in this draft that I like but I choose Renner here because he has experience and he runs an offense that has some similarities to the Patriots in that it is both up-tempo and relies on quick hitting short passing.

Round Five

Jace Amaro, TE, Texas Tech

51747fbc123f9.image.jpg

here's My Lyerla alternative. From CBS Sports:

Amaro has an ideal build with a tall, chiseled frame and long arms to extend and jolt defenders as a blocker, using pop and aggression to latch on and redirect his target. He is a terrific athlete for his size with natural burst out of his breaks and off the line of scrimmage, accelerating quickly and easily to get to his top speed (rumored to be in the mid-4.5 range) in a hurry. Amaro isn't just an athlete, though, displaying big mitts and natural focus to watch the ball into his hands and quickly turn upfield. The biggest red flag for Amaro might be durability with several injuries dating back to his high school days, including the spleen issue last year that cost him six games. He was also arrested in March 2012 on credit-card fraud, though he is genuinely considered to be a high-character individual by the coaches. The Texas Tech offense doesn't really utilize the traditional tight end position, but Amaro is expected to line up as an inside receiver, occasionally with his hand on the ground, and is primed for a breakout season.

He's a junior and there are some red flags, but he's someone that will be worth watching in the Hernandez replacement stakes.

Round Six

Caraun Reid, DT, Princeton

prin_reid_caraun.jpg

Is possibly my early later round binky. Reid is athletic plays with outstanding aggressive hands and whilst kicking around the 300lb mark is a strength against the run whilst having the ability to penetrate the pocket and get after the QB. Is on the Senior Bowl pre-season watch list so hopefully we'll get to see much more of him.

Round Seven

Jeremy Butler, WR, Tennessee-Martin

butlervertical.jpg

He's 6-3, 205lbs and judging from the video below, has a wonderful pair of hands. If this vid is in any way indicative of his abilities, then I'm a fan.

A few years too early for that, grasshopper. ;)

It took three firsts to trade up a handful of spots for RG III. It'll take a lot more than all our 2014 picks to go get Bridgewater.

Manxman -- appreciate the first mock, but there's a glaring hole there. Not even one Rutgers player. Got to study up on them this year or you'll be disappointed! :)

Good mock. A TE and double dipping at DT is a pretty safe bet as things stand right now I suspect.

It's my hope that the Patriots have a long look at adding some DT impact players this season. It would be delicious if Louis Nix could drop to the Patriots first pick. That said, I do like your pick of DeAndre Coleman manx.

I have just enough faith in the incompetence of the JEST that they will not be in a position to get Manziel.

Moreover, if Manziel is as smart as some people claim he is, he'll stay in school if there's any danger of him being drafted by the JEST.

Some really interesting DTs this year potentially of all types. I think it's quite possible that Nix falls although I'm seeing some mocks with him going top 5 which I think is crazy.

One guy who I think might go high like top 10 high but would be really interesting for the Pats is the 6'8", 350lb Daniel McCullers (Ted Washington?).

But I also think DeAndre Coleman has the body type BB likes for DT.

I like this pick. Two gappers are hard to find and he could be a monster with better coaching.

I like this draft quite a bit as it addresses all the major needs. Although, I wish there was a way to get a second DT in the first 3 rounds and a good prospect at DE.

If the New England Patriots re-sign Wendell and Svitek, there would be no need to draft an offensive lineman in the third round. Hence, the New England Patriots could hypothetically select a second defensive tackle in the third round.

Wait...are we not trading Mallett for a high #1 draft pick? I'm confused. He was worth thr #1 pick in his draft year, and only slid because of off-the-field issues! He'll have had three years learning behind the best, and any GM worth anything would rather have that than the unknown quantity that is a draft pick.

With the first week of college football just about out of the way I might as well get my first mock draft of the season going to. This is of course very early and I've only seen a limited number of players so far.

Trade 1st for early 2nd and 4th (I really just needed an extra mid round pick to fit my guys in).

* Number in bracket is NFL Draft Scout Ranking

2a. Ra'Shede Hagemann- Minnesota -6'6" 312lbs (43)
20121204_kkt_bl2_4860_standard_3520_zps34262018.jpg

DT is obviously a huge need right now and should be a draft priority. Hagemann is an absolute freak of an athlete (ranked #2 on the freaks list by Bruce Feldman) and has the potential to be a top 5 pick if he develops. Right now he is a 2nd rounder and I'm hoping he doesn't develop too quickly this season.

He's certainly the most athletic. Not only does he have the 36-inch vert, but he also has bench-pressed 465 pounds and clocked an electronically timed 10-yard sprint in 1.57 seconds. For comparison sake, no DT at this year's NFL Combine jumped higher than 33 inches, and Terron Armstead, the offensive tackle who ran the blazing 4.71 40 at the combine, did a 1.64 in his 10.

2b.DT- Deandre Coleman- Cal- 6'5" 315lb (88)
cal_20dance_20team_2012-1020_1519052_std.0_standard_709.0.jpg

I liked my big, long, athletic DT earlier in round two so much I thought I would grab another. Like manx said, he is a good athlete, huge upside and has the skills to two-gap. What I like about this pair of DTs along with Armstead is size, length, athleticism and scheme versatility. Whether its 4-3 or 3-4, 1-gap, 2-gap or my favorite 4-3 under. These two would help stop the run, rush the passer, clog up passing lanes with their length and really offer a huge amount of defensive versatility, especially with #75 getting up there in age.

3. C- Travis Swanson- Arkansas- 6'4" 320lbs (66 could maybe swap positions with Coleman)
101001AMARKRT-0098_zpsddcc984d.jpg

Interior O-line could be another need although I hope we do re-sign Wendell. Swanson is arguably the top C in the 2014 draft (although recent history has the top C entering the year dropping like a rock before the draft) and is another guy I like from the athletic freak list.

Arguably the nation's top center, the 320-pound Swanson has already wowed the new Razorbacks coaching staff. Swanson has been clocked by the Hogs staff in the three-cone drill at 7.39 seconds. (Former Texas A&M star Luke Joeckel, the second pick in April's draft, ran it in 7.40 while Eric Fisher, the first overall pick, did it in 7.59 seconds.) "His movement ability is second only to (Cleveland Browns All-Pro left tackle) Joe Thomas out of linemen that I have worked with in the last 12 years," said strength coach Ben Herbert, who came over from Wisconsin.

Freaks List: The 20 craziest athletes in college football - NCAA Football - CBSSports.com News, Scores, Stats, Schedule and BCS Rankings

While he has great movement skills, his best asset at the moment is probably his pass protection, which could make him one of the better C's in the NFL if he can continue to develop the other parts of his game.

4a. FB- Trey Millard- Oklahoma- 6'2" 250lbs (104)
rn_texas_oklahoma_ms_10_zps55a3fe12.jpg

I will say this right now, Trey Millard is one of the 10 best players in college football. He is versatile, athletic and a flat out beast. While it may be impossible to find a replacement for Aaron Hernandez, Millard would do a fantastic job and contribute in even more ways. He is a fantastic lead blocking FB, he can run the ball, catch it out of the backfield, line up at TE and is Oklahoma's best special teams player. He is actually Oklahoma's best player period. He is a combo FB/RB/HB/TE and special teamer that offers so much value I would draft him as high as round 2, he is that good.

4b. CB- Kyle Fuller- Virginia Tech- 6'0" 190lbs (142)
kf_1316035980_zps30a6ad0e.jpg

Fuller was supposed to be one of the best CB's in college football in 2012 but he never really developed last season. The talent is still there and I think he could break out in 2013 and force himself into the top 2 rounds. He has good size, athleticism and coverage ability that should make him at least a solid NFL CB with the potential for more.

5. OT- Cornelius Lucas- Kansas State- 6'8" 328lbs (146)
hi-res-6920990_display_image_zps00f1d38f.jpg

When I was watching tape I couldn't help but notice Lucas. Maybe its because the guy is freakin' huge, but I came away impressed. Lucas has great length, is a good athlete, is excellent in pass protection and does a good job moving his feet and getting to the second level. He still has a lot of technique work to do and he needs to improve his run blocking but I think he has huge upside. I would also like to see him get a bit 'meaner' and finish his block, especially drive blocking where he seems a bit passive. Unique size and skillset though, especially as a pass blocker and well worth a shot in the 4th/5th round.

6. QB- Keith Price- Washington- 6'1" 202lbs (277)
KeithPrice_zps324068e2.jpg

I see him as a poor mans Teddy Bridgewater and not just because of the similar appearance. The more I watch the more I really like Price as a developmental guy that has a chance to be really good. He has a good but not quite great arm (although I think he can continue to improve that), he is a great athlete and excellent runner, but don't be fooled, he is a pure pocket QB. I really like the way he moves around the pocket, keeps his eyes down field and uses his athleticism to keep plays alive. He throws the ball vertically down the field well, particularly down the seams and is especially good off play action.

He still has some areas to improve and some technique issues to work through but I really like his skill set. He is undersized which will scare some teams off but it doesn't really concern me. From a comparison standpoint to me he looks like a combination of Bridgewater in the pocket (although he doesn't quite have the same arm) and Russel Wilson running and throwing on the run. I think Price is poised for a huge year and could easy push himself up to being one of the top QB's in the draft.

7th- Lottery Ticket
Just take a high ceiling guy and hope to strike gold.

If we do resign Wendell, then this slot should go to OG Steen of Alabama. A quietly effective beast who can blow open running lanes with ease against the nastiest of SEC competition.

This year we get to see Steen go against DT Anthony Johnson of LSU one on one for a whole game. Should be interesting.

@Wilfork 75

Excellent mock and description. Agree with you on Hageman; a really nice prospect that could end up going much higher than currently projected.

Really like Kyle Fuller although I'm not convinced he's a great fit in that he's similar to Arrington and Ryan as a good run-stopping CB. The Millard pick is very nice and the only pick I can't really get on board with is Keith Price.

Good work.
