Patriots | Banta-Cain not opposed to returning with team
Tue, 27 Feb 2007 08:34:57 -0800

Albert Breer, of the Metrowest Daily News, reports New England Patriots pending free agent LB Tully Banta-Cain says he is open to signing a contract extension with the team, according to his agent. "I think that the Patriots would like to retain Tully's services and Tully would like to stay employed with Patriots," agent James Sims said. "That's a situation that's still to be determined. It's one of those things where we'll have to wait and see."

This will be interesting to watch. I think that we should give Tully a chance.:)

Tully's agent is trying to make it seem like the Patriots want him back.

That was my impression too...not getting a lot of love in the under-the-table early FA market?

I think we resign him if he changes his name. Either Banta or Cain but not both. :singing:

Maybe they put a hand on his knee and he said "The party is just getting started, let me see if I can hook up with someone prettier (offering more money), if I don't then I will either get really drunk or come looking for you (or both)."

I have thought all along that TBC would be a good signing dependant on the $ amount, if they don't make an offer it likely means they liked what they saw at the combine.

I'ld love to have him back as a Back up OLB/ pass rushing specialist and for STs. It would have to be at the right price and my guess is he could get better than Ild be willing to pay on the free market.

He isnt a starter but he is good piece of depth and we need depth at LBer.

With our two draft picks, I do not feel that it will bee that difficult to get an upgrade.

sign him if he's cheap, if not, let him go.

Warm Regards,
Captain Obvious

You at least need circle-jerk status to be a Captain, Ensign.

Don't dismiss him too early, he may be the best linebacker the Pats

are able to get.

You forget Chad Brown and Monte Beisel.

All the obvious formulations for weeks now ("if the price is right!"
... beg the real question.
WHAT is the right price (range)?

Shall i open the bidding?
4 or 5 years.
$2 mil s/b.
Min sal the first year.
Ramping up pretty sharply ... perhaps rich with incentives ... so that he had better have become real good by the 4th or 5th year,
or he'll be cut as a cap casualty - with 1/2 mil dead money lost.
Total real money risked being an average cap hit of 2 mil+ for 3 or 4 years.

Does any club elsewhere love him more than that?
Is that too much for ST and depth and situational pass rush?

TBC is still a work in progress. He has improved each year. Its clear his agent is trying to draw some attention to him, and there aren't a lot of callers. I see the team extending him, inexpensively, and I see TBC continuing to develop here.

How the Pats rate his run stoping ability will determine if he's made a competitive offer. I was not impressed.

If Beisel and Chad Brown are your yardstick, then the Patriots should probably go ahead and sign just about every free agent linebacker out there.
