Roster Structure - Defense

On a previous post, someone suggested that each starter have a backup.

A case can been made for a 5th DE instead of a 4th LB, since the DE's also play LB.

I'd probably go 26 on defense given only Slater and Washington stand to be core special teams players from the offensive unit. You could add Bolden if he makes the cut but none the less I'd likely go 24, 26, 3.

There is no situational value of an inactive third quarterback. Either Belichick sees to value in having a developmental #3 QB on the team, or not. It really is that simple.

Especially if the 9th OL or whatever positional N+1th backup is a developmental guy that you can waive successfully to the PS, then there's little gained by keeping the last level backup on the 53 vs instead keeping on the 53 some other more situationally needed (e.g. STs) player.

I hope BB does not read this and keep a 3rd QB, rationalizing some ****amamie situational value.

As Reiss has been repeatedly writing about, we're a little thin at interior defensive line. Joe Vellano as a backup? Are you kidding me?

It's great that Tommy Kelly looks like an upgrade, esp. on passing downs, over what we've had, but we have to start spelling Iron Vince some more relief.

It _really_ hurts we passed on New England native Kendall Reyes to take what looks like a STer in the second round a couple of years ago. I can't even bring myself to type in TW's name. In my opinion the biggest mistake of the Belichick era.

Reyes showed flashes, esp. at the end of his rookie season last year as a starter, and is on the fast track to be a stud 3-4 end in San Diego. He's generating a lot of enthusiasm.

I hope that USC kid who played in Canada works out for us, but that's a big IF.

Look for us to pick up a veteran or two at the DT position, our weakest part of the roster. Esp. if Vince is injured. And don't expect Kelly to stay healthy either. He's old.

I almost always come to Tavon Wilson's defense when it comes to other Safeties we could have drafted in 2012 but I can't help but agree we should have taken Kendall Reyes, Jerel Worthy, Zach Brown or Lavonte David instead.

2. Trevor Scott

What was supposed to be perhaps a brief stint just to add a body to the preseason roster, may have turned into a spot earned on the regular season roster. Defensive end Trevor Scott was acquired earlier this week to possibly help push Da'Quan Bowers but Saturday night, he made a case to remain on the roster. Scott beat the Miami offensive tackles consistently and recorded three sacks and forced a fumble.

2. Trevor Scott

Scott surely seems to enjoy playing against the Doofins.

This is fine, but isn't Benard our #3 DE? Who are our backup DE's? Are you counting on Francis and Buchanan?

Justin Francis and whoever Bill Belichick deems as the fourth best defensive end.

Benard seems to be filling that situational pass rusher role for us. I can't imagine him logging significant minutes at DE unless our base/nickel does a consistently good job of getting us into 3rd and longs... I can dream.

We have so much versatility at DE between guys that can stand, put their hand in the dirt or swing inside to play 3 technique in light packages it's so hard to project the 4-5 guys.
