Thursday (March 1) is the day offers of RFAs must be submitted. The Pats have only 4 players listed as RFAs. Interesting all were undrafted, of the bunch I think Gay is the only one who gets a tender. They could also let him walk as there is a good chance he ends up injuring himself while signing the contract. His upside is a very good 4th corner or an ok 3rd corner.

Predictions:

• Rashad Baker, S - No offer
• Randall Gay, CB - Door #2, $1,300,000 tender, round 2 draft pick if signed elsewhere.
• Gene Mruczkowski, C - No offer
• Billy Yates, G - No offer

As per usual I expect very little movement in RFAs being signed by other teams but think there may be more trades than we have seen in the past.

A Restricted Free Agent (RFA) is any player that has completed three accrued seasons and their contract has expired. A RFA must be tendered with an offer on or before the Restricted Free Agent Signing Period begins. The RFA can be tendered one of four offers. They are:
(1) Right of First Refusal and Draft Selection at player's Original Draft Round but a second-round pick if the player was a first-round pick: This is a one year player contract at a salary of $850,000 (for 2007) or 110% of the players prior year's salary (whichever is greater). If another club signs said RFA, the team tendering the offer receives one draft pick equal to the round the RFA was selected in during the draft but in the case the player was a first round pick the pick will be a second round pick.
(2) Right of First Refusal and a second-round pick: This is a one year player contract at a salary of $1,300,000 (for 2007) or 110% of the players prior year's salary (whichever is greater). If another club signs said RFA, the team tendering the offer receives one second round draft pick.
(3) Right of First Refusal and One First Round Draft Selection: This is a one year player contract at a salary of $1,850,000 (for 2007) or 110% of the players prior year's salary (whichever is greater). If another club signs said RFA, the team tendering the offer receives one first round draft pick.
(4) Right of First Refusal and One First Round Draft Selection, and One Third Round Draft Selection: This is a one year player contract at a salary of $2,350,000 (for 2007) or 110% of the players prior year's salary (whichever is greater). If another club signs said RFA, the team tendering the offer receives one first round draft pick and one third round draft selection. If no tender offer is made by the start of the Restricted Free Agent Signing Period, then the player becomes an Unrestricted Free Agent.

One way or another I think they keep Yates.

They thought highly enough of him to make him the highest paid practice squad player ever. He adds good depth at guard.

If the Pats don't tender Gay that high, the Jets are interested in

his services. I agree it is too much money for an often injured player

but the Pats have to cover their butt in case the Samuel thing gets out

of hand. The other three guys will not be given tender offers because

the money is guaranteed. They might be re-signed as UFAs.

With the new CBA, there is a new third tender that comes with an automatic second round compensation. This year that is the $850k tender. So if we give Gay the the third tender, we would get a second round pick if someone signed him away. I am betting that is the tender offer Gay since he is coming off two consecutive season ending injuries.

Sorry, my bad. I looked at the original information wrong because they are listed from lowest tender to highest.

I still think the Pats will tender Gay with the third tender (or second on Miguel's list) since $1.3 million with the amount of cap space we have isn't all that much.

Curtis Martin agreed to basically a one year contract with the Jets with a player option of an additional three or four years. The Pats couldn't match the offer because Martin would have not exercised the option and he would have been an UFA the following year with a big one year contract.

It was basically a poision pill that made it impossible for the Pats to match with the alternative being a first and third round pick compensation. If the Pats didn't have Boddy Grier making the picks, the Pats might have gotten a decent deal.

I suspect the Gay situation will tell us a great deal about what their intentions are with: a) Samuel b) free agency c) the draft.

I think he's OK and at the right price we could do worse.

It was a poison pill. I don't think it was that Curtis didn't like it here. He wanted a new contract a year earlier because he was only making a few hundred grand, but Grier refused to and it was made fairly public that the Pats felt they were making a shrewd move by having an All Pro RB at a bargain basement price. My guess is that Martin was upset that not only did the Pats not want to do a long term deal early, but also flaunted that they didn't. In hindsight, it was very disrespectful the way they treated Martin.

Miguel, in his 2007 FAs Workbook has the Pats tendering all 4 players:

Baker - low
Gay - 1st
Mruczkowski - low
Yates - 2nd

I see no reason why the Pats wouldn't tender any of these guys. They all should be back, and there's a strong possibility each will make the team (Yates or Gay being the strongest, Baker the weakest).

We will know in a day or so, comments:
- I don't see any value in tendering Baker for $850. Another veteran JAG could be signed for $500.
- first round tender is $1.85, seems a little high for Gay
- second round tender $1.35 seems high for Yates, again he could be replaced by a JAG or a day 2 draft pick for much less money
- $850 tender to Mruc. could be used as a block but he has been cut 10 times by the Pats and no one else signed him, why would it be different this time, and it is not a big loss if he leaves
