First wave of cuts

This team loves measurables, so I would expect them to try finding a way to keep Harrison around.

Is the measurable you are referring to attending Rutgers??

Who goes? Who stays? Any surprises?

It wouldn't surprise me at all to see Jake Ballard, Tavon Wilson, and Jake Bequette cut on Tuesday. I could also throw Adrian Wilson in that category.

Thoughts?

are you trying to out do the guy who started the massive fail thread about how badly we were gonna beat the Lions?

I think Green is terrible, but at least he gets playing time. They'd be too thin on corners for game 4 without him.

I hate to say it but even Marquise Cole is better than Green, jeez

Aiken goes before Sims, IMO.

My guesses:

DLman Armond Armstead & WR Mark Harrison to PUP/NFI
FB Ben Bartholomew
WR Kamar Aiken (to IR?)
TE Evan Landi
1 of OLmen Chris McDonald, Luke Patterson or Brice Schwab (all 3 suck equally)
DT Cory Grissom to IR
CB Brandon Jones (to IR?)
LS Mike Zupancic

Don't forget that in order to put a player on Injured Reserve right now he first has to clear waivers (waive/injured), and then only if nobody claims him you can then place him on IR; it's the same situation that resulted in the Patriots claiming Jake Ballard. That doesn't change until the final roster cuts August 31, when teams need to get down to 53 players.

Aiken, Grissom and Jones would likely clear waivers but Armstead and Harrison would still count as being on the 75-man roster for now; they can't go from pre-season PUP or NFI to the in-season version until September 1.

First round of cuts only needs to get the team down to 75, so I think we're looking at a Kamar Aiken type rather than a Jake Ballard type. Pulling from the currently listed Patriots roster (It's late, so I'm trusting its accuracy over my memory):

Kamar Aiken/Quentin Sims/Mark Harrison - My guess is Sims, but I could see any of them going

From what I've been reading, Sims seems to be ahead of Aiken at this moment. Harrison seems an obvious IR move, considering he hasn't practiced even once, and we are heading towards the last week of preseason. Aiken impressed early in camp, but seems to have disappeared. The fact that Sims came in late, and is still around, makes me think they feel they have something there. Hopefully, they both wind up on our practice squad.

Mark Harrison

I don’t really see any reason to cut Mark Harrison, he is on PUP currently and can remain there either till midseason or redshirt and move to IR if they don’t believe he is ready in 2013.

To me, Sims appeared to be better at getting open and making the contested catches during the training camp than Dobson. I think if Dobson and Sims were both UDF's and joined the team at the same time then Sims would have beaten Dobson for a roster spot. :beatingcoming:

Calling for the heads of Bequette, T. Wilson and the like is ridiculous and shows how little you know about team management.

Your post makes no sense.

They went to Sims late, almost as if Mallett really trusts him the most of the second/third team receivers. It would have helped if he caught the TD at the end. For him, it seems like a numbers game, no matter what. He'd be a good pickup for a team like the Jets or the Eagles looking for a 3rd string WR/ST guy.

maybe he can make the practice squad-eroo.

As DI said, this makes no sense at all. 0-2 of these players may make the roster; that's not my point.

T WILSON
If it weren't for his top special teams play, his roster spot would be in jeopardy. This would have been especially true if Harmon played like he belonged in the NFL (as an adequate #4 safety). As it is, Wilson is our 4th safety and Harmon is a developmental player who will likely be inactive in most games. And yes, I suspect that the coaches still have hopes for T Wilson's future improvement.

BEQUETTE
Belichick can choose among BEQUETTE, FRANCIS, BENARD, BUCHANAN and CUNNINGHAM.
If he is looking to the future, I would think the best prospects are Benard, Francis and Buchanan. For me, Bequette or Buchanan will be cut , with the hope of signing them toe the Practice Squad. The other will be on the 53, probably inactive each week.

Nobody from the Patriots as of 2 pm on Friday 8-23, but the wave of cuts from other teams has begun with the Dolphins letting go of five guys. It's interesting that the Jets cut Mike Shanahan - I wonder if anybody told the Redskins.

Good up to the minute list:

Just a risk management question...

Right now the Patriots need to get down to 53 within 10 days and one pre-season game. I think it is fairly safe to assume that the Patriots coaching staff has identified with a high degree of certainty players #1 through #50 or so on the roster and may have five to eight guys fighting for the last three slots. I also think that the Patriots have identified their preferred practice squad players at this time (some of those guys may not be in the group of 5 to 8 fighting for the last three active roster slots). I would imagine that the Patriots roster management goal is to get to final cut-down day with their best 53 and the highest probability of getting their preferred practice squad. This means roughly 60 to 65 guys are safe in round 1.

Of the remaining twenty five to thirty five players, the Patriots have to get to 75. These sure to go players are a combination of UDFAs, street free agents, returning players that got beat out, and guys who are willing to go on the shadow roster. Some proportion of these guys need to dress for the 4th preseason game.

On a risk management perspective, I would rather have a UDFA go to the IR due to an injury on the 4th preseaon game rather than a 5th year veteran who otherwise would have been cut next week go on the IR.

With this thought in mind, my take on cuts would be to cut as many non-minimal salary guys as possible in the first round to get a little bit of cap insurance in case of 4th preseason game injuries.

Didn't know the Fish cut Carpenter (and he signed with the Cardinals)

Too late now but he would have been more competition for Ghost than Allen is for Mesko....

Bequette is a dead man walking...Wilson had a good hit at least. Not sure if that saves his spot though.
