We went throught this with Branch last year and other teams are doing the same? In Buffalo now it reported that
MaGahee, who doesn’t like to work out in Buffalo in the off-season, has mentioned a holdout from training camp if he doesn’t receive a new deal.

This stinks ....What can the NFL do if anything?

the team can fine him.

you can't force someone to play/practice/whatever. all you can do is withhold payment and guarantee that if he doesn't play for you he doesn't play at all. you don't own him, you have a contract with him.

To take this thread in another holdout direction. Does anyone think anyone on the Pats will hold out this year (besides rookies)? The closest I could see would be Caldwell or Gaffney looking for a long term deal, but it seems doubtful.

More likely for a holdout would be Samuel, who was looking to cash in huge after his season.

Caldwell and Gaffney don't have nearly the leverage, especially after the performances of Patten, Givens, and Branch once they left the Patriots.

samuel is not leaving 8 million bucks on the table he can threaten its not going to happen

Samuels would be the only hold out I see, but I'm sick and tired of seeing a Pats player hold out... I wish their was more of a "punishment" of sort... The players are getting to greedy, h@ll, I'd be happy with 1 mil a year, and they are getting their panties in a wad over 5 mil or whatever it may be...

nfl should do something about holdouts

if you hold out X amount of days..you miss the same # of games

So lets say Brady holds out (i know he never will, an example) for 6 days, make him miss 6 weeks!

There is plenty of punishment. However, most front offices are overly concerned with the press and let the players get their way.

I would say to the front office, MAKE A STATEMENT!! Quit letting the players run all over ya!! :)

The Pats do not have a single player on their roster named Samuels.

And they would say to the fans, "Could you please get the name of the players we already have correct before we go out and get more?"

Be nice to the lady, Digger.

I am not a proponent of holding out, but I can understand that someone who is one of the best in the world at their given profession, playing in a market that bears extremely high salaries, and working at their profession only for a very limited amount of time, would try to get all they can when they can. Especially playing in a league that does not guarantee contracts.

Its "Asante" too...

But anyway Asante has everything to lose and nothing to gain by holding out.

If Asante holds out he loses..

Nearly 8 Million

Sitting out a season would only hurt his likelihood of getting a big contract next year, teams would have to consider him a one season wonder without another high quality season this year, let alone someone who hasn't played a game in a year

I think it hurts his chances of nailing that huge contract if he's one of the type of players who "holds out", and yes I realize Branch walked into the contract of his life, but thats a lesson learned, thanks Seattle.

What Asante gains:

Nearly 8 million

Another great season would put his "franchise tag" salary into a 4-6 yr contract, depending on what he's looking for.

A realistic chance at a superbowl.

The only reason he would want to hold out is to avoid a potential injury without a contract, but it would cost him too much. This is a no-brainer to me, no hold out from Asante this season. Branch situation was very different.
