From Schefter's twitter:

It is “not realistic” to expect Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski to be ready to play regular-season opener at Buffalo, per source.

One of biggest roster decisions NE will have to make is whether to carry Rob Gronkowski on 53-man roster or place him on PUP.

Personally, I am saying he will not be PUPed and will be back around week 3 or 4. Granted I am no expert. Word seems to be that he is medically cleared to run and work out, but needs to get back into football shape.

Some posts from Albert Breer on the subject:

Late September has been the general timeframe for a Gronkowski return. So as @AdamSchefter said, Week 1 is virtually out of the question.

Everything with Gronk is fluid, b/c they're being careful, and he'll need to regain strength. That call on the PUP list will be a tough one.

The good news on Gronk: He has been running. But again, regaining core strength/being careful is the priority.

I'd prefer he's on the field and 100% weeks 19-21 vs 3-6 so I'm all for the PUP if that's what it takes.

The thing is you don't stash him on the PUP to try keep him healthy for the playoffs. If you think he can regain his strength and football shape by week 3 or 4, you don't PUP and you play him when he is ready.

Keeping him on the PUP could produce a negative impact for his play in the playoffs. He may need to play for a long time to fully regain 100% of his football shape. Making him start that progress in week 7 or later may mean he never fully gets it back this year.

You don't put him on the PUP unless you think it is doubtful or not a given that he he will be ready to play in the first six weeks. I don't think you keep him out just because you want him healthy for the playoffs because there is no guarantee of that even if you keep him out until week 15 or 16.

Putting him on PUP would be less beneficial because he will have no Football at all, just strength & conditioning for the first 6 weeks of the season and teams KNOW he isn't playing, have him on the roster and make opponents plan for him just in case.

My blind guess is practicing again after game one but won't play in an actual game until game three.

If you think he'll be ready to practice in <6 weeks, then you don't PUP him. Even if he didn't play until week 6, if he was ready to get back into practice and working on team drills/scrimmages in week 3-4, I'd still prefer that the Pats leave him on the roster. He's that valuable, and getting him up to game speed should be a top priority as well, right after getting him healthy.

My thoughts exactly. Though he might not be ready for week 1. My thought are he could still be ready to go before week 6.

Yea - I don't think that he is going to be on the in-season PUP but will miss the first 2-3 games of the season so that he can get in game shape.

This was to be expected.

Hope he starts on Pup.

That wouldn't make much sense from a practicing standpoint though. We still have another 3 weeks to the season, and it'd be at least 6 weeks after that. That would mean that he wouldn't even be able to practice for another 9-10 weeks....

Remember that we play 2 games within the first several days of the season in having to play the NYJ on Thursday night football, so the odds of him returning for the first 2 games were pretty low in my opinion--and always were. Understanding that anything can always happen, those who predicted that he wouldn't miss any time were really looking at it on the intensely optimistic side. More importantly, I don't think they were paying close attention to the schedule and the fact that we play 2x in the first 4 or 5 days of the season.

Couldn't agree more

The problem with PUP is that he can't even practice until after game 6, then he would undoubtedly take awhile to get up to game speed. He's allowed up to 21 days of practice, IIRC, after that. He would need some of that.

Thus the PUP option is not really just missing 6 games, but more likely 8-9 games.

I think he's on the 53.

We all knew the situation re: Gronk and what it would entail, but where's Danny Amendola now?

Just saw on ESPN that he wasn't there today and they're speculating that he could be injured.

Anyone heard anything?

Got hit in back of head his 2nd to last play..tapped helmet to leave..came back in 2 plays later and that was it...hope no concussion....

Looks like the organization may finally be listening to me regarding a week 3 return. This could be a first...and last.

Well, I'm a bit relieved to hear that's "all" it is.

Amendola is a pretty tough player, so I assume we'll see him again in a couple of days. Even if he misses the next preseason game, who really cares?

It's obvious they've developed a nice connection. Glad to hear it is not something worse.

No one will care if he misses the preseason game..but if he does miss it...it's not a good sign IMO since it's a good amount of days away from the incident. We all know his history...hopefully just a precaution

Word was that he got the day off. Not injury related. A rest day.

The ability of Patsfans posters to take wins for granted is never surprising. The sooner Gronkowski is ready to suit up and play the better. Gronk improves the Patriots Offense ten fold. The sooner he is running with Amendola, Dobson, Thompkins, Boyce and Sudfeld (you know all the NEW players on O) the better.

One win in the NFL is bloody hard to achieve. That's something worth remembering.
