Reiss reports that Cannon, Connolly and Zusevics are all out. Not to repeat this in every thread, BUT this points out the need for carrying a 9th offensive lineman.

Reiss also reports that Dowling, Dennard, and McCourty are out (although McCourty could play). This points out the need to carry the additional player in the secondary.

And yes, Gronkowski and Fells are out, pointing out the need to carry 4 TE's.

I still don't see that the Pats need to carry an extra o-lineman. We are still three weeks away from the start of the regular season, not three days. If Cannon, Connolly and Zusevics are all back next week, then an extra o-lineman would take away from a position of bigger need.

Unless we know that any of these injuries are injuries that the coaching staff know will linger into the regular season, I don't see the need to carry more than 8 o-linemen especially if the Pats decide to carry 3 QBs and 5 RBs. In that case, it would be stupid to carry 9 o-linemen.

The injury situation may not be the same in two weeks.

Yes, this is a really odd thread.

So if someone isn't injured this week do we not need any backups at their position?

I would say that it would be stupid to carry 5 RB's and 3 QB's.

I think that the thread simply underlines the need for backup interior offensive linemen. We are well-stocked at OT with backups Cannon and Svitek able to start. We even have Zusevics as a 4th OT if Cannon is considered an OG. IMHO, we have a major hole at backup OG and should carry a backup interior OL, even if we carry only 8 offensive linemen.

The point is that backup offensive linemen are not luxury roster spots. Injuries happen a lot on the OL. We have the best OL in the NFL. Part of the reason has been our backups like Cannon, Thomas and McDonald. We have Cannon and Svitek. We are one short.

Yes, this is a really odd thread.

My takeaway from this is that, if Svitek can credibly play guard, then his chances of making the team go way up. That kind of positional versatility is extremely valuable in backup linemen.

I don't disagree, but that is more of a reality than 9 o-linemen though in my eyes.

Of all the things the NFL does to try and improve the NFL's popularity and excitement, can someone explain to me why they're are so rigid when it comes to 53 man player rosters? Wouldn't there be a better quality of product if teams had a roster size of say 60 players so teams could be better resistant to injuries and possibly put better talent on the field?

How often have roster sizes been increased, if ever?

/tangent.

Roster sizes used to be 45 players. The inactive 8 was added in an effort afford teams some injury protection and room for developmental prospects. I'm not seeing a huge need to expand rosters, personally. Is the 60th guy going to be that much better for having been on the team than if he was at home? And wouldn't he likely have been around on the practice squad anyway?

The numbers have been similar since 1978, having been increased from the 40 from 1964-1973. It is not clear how to count the various taxi squads.

If we moved to a 60 man team, we would likely get rid of the Practice Squad. This would be better for the teams, but arguably NOT better for the players.

We now have at least a 62 man 2013 team. 8 are on the Practice Squad and vulnerable to other teams picking them up. One player is an in-season IR player who can return. In addition to these, we have players on the PUP and NFI lists, who can return this year. Obviously, we also have players on IR that cannot play during the current season.

If you are concerned about our Practice Squad being poached, this does occasionally happen. But understand that this works both ways. The patriots occasionally sign Practice Team players from other teams.

BOTTOM LINE
So, I don't think that expanded rosters would help the game any. Some have suggested a larger active roster (recently increased to 46). However, that would simply increase the specialization of players.

The current roster limits make flexibility in backups very valuable indeed. Who would have thought that Svitek could start at OG? In 2011, an OL was our 3rd TE. In 2012, a TE was our fullback (a role that we usually assign to an offensive linemen.

Zusevics and an interior offensive lineman (Kline, McDonald, Stankiewitch) can be placed on the practice squad.

I'm all for having developmental linemen in Dante's PS Academy. I wouldn't want to count on any of the interior linemen you listed to help this year's squad.

If we carry only 8 OL's, I would indeed prefer that Zusevics be on the Practice Squad. We need a backup C/G. We have 4 starter quality tackles.

Not exactly. Five cornerbacks should be sufficient:

Talib
Dennard
Arrington
Ryan
Cole

As far as I am concerned, Glass-IR Dowling can convalesce at the NFLPA's expense for the remainder of the year.

a bit premature, but fair enough

Maybe the Philadelphia Eagles will cut Matt Tennant.

If so, the New England Patriots can report that the "Tennant" finally paid the rent.

You mean if Tennant was evicted?
