Official Patriots vs Eagles Post Pre-Season Game Thread

Re: Official Patriots vs Eagles Post Game Thread

Color me perplexed. I have to ask. Did you stop watching the game after the 1st half because these don't make any sense at all.

Logan Ryan played a very good game. Justin Green, however, did not.
Gostkowski wasn't inconsistent on his kick-offs. Maybe you don't understand that BB decided to not allowed them to run the ball back after the 33 yard return because of the missed tackles. But every kick after the 1st two were done for touch backs.

What's a joke is that you don't even mention Tebow or Bolden who were ones who truly looked horrible tonight. Especially in comparison to what you mentioned.

Logan Ryan missed at least 2 tackles by a pretty large margin, he made some but, after watching him at Rutgers the one thing he (as well as every other player in the secondary) consistently was coming up in run support and making tackles on anything in front of them. He had a horrible drop on a ball thrown right to him and Im pretty sure it was him who got beat by salas on the one handed grab before the game ended. Both him and Green had poor nights and Cole looked downright bad. Maybe it isn't too fair to single out Ryan as the entire 2nd team secondary let Fowles have his way. I don't know what you saw from Bolden to say he looked terrible (pls don't tell me that you had a problem with that joke of a running into the punter call). Rushing, he ran behind our 2nd line and I didn't see anything wrong with what he did. Pass protection was pretty bad all around when Tebow was in the game. As for Tebow himself, I will not give any evaluation of him, Im not feeding that beast that has taken over this forum.

I question whether or not that the ball that Boyce missed in the Endzone was truly the fault of Mallett the way people on here are saying. I say this because, after reviewing it (love my DVR), it looks like Boyce actually picked it up late. That's why he only put one arm out for it and didn't lay out or jump for it with both arms extended. Had he picked it up earlier, I think he could have had both arms up and adjusted as needed and made the catch, no problem.
I'll have to go back to the game tape, but you're probably right. Boyce was thoroughly unimpressive tonight though, it wouldn't shock at all if that miss was on him.

Though, my initial reaction was knee-jerk on Mallett because his accuracy was Tebow-esque tonight so pardon me if I blamed him for that potential touchdown miss.

Ryan sucked. Nothing wrong with your evaluation there.

Ah yes, I forgot to list Logan Ryan in my initial rookie report. His play tonight was forgettable so that's perhaps why.

I know he received minimal safety help from the inept Tavon Wilson but still, Ryan outright stunk tonight in pass coverage. He looked like an UDFA out there. Based on his play tonight he's got a long, long way to go and if he ends up starting on the outside the Patriots are in significant trouble.

Not that he would have caught it anyway either but I wasn't a big fan of the effort at the end there. Some receivers lay out for those.

Not to bad for the first game of the year. I still don't fell to safe with Gostkowski as our kicker but he always seems to get it done in the regular season. Also Tebow did not look to bad for getting all that playing time for the first time since he was with Denver. All and all it was not bad for the first game of the per-season allot to work on in practice this week looking forward to Friday night at Gillette.

QB report/grades:

A for Brady - he was sharp and surgical as always. Not going to get into superlatives but for those questioning his arm strength at 36, look at that laser to Dobson on their 2nd drive. He still has a lot of zip on the ball and that loft to Vereen was beautiful.

C- for Mallett - I thought he would've improved more so far but his accuracy was resoundingly erratic tonight. I wasn't impressed but his footwork and pocket presence are much better than they were last season.

C for Tebow - and before people get on me about Tebow's grade being higher than Mallett, consider this, Mallett has been with this team for 3 years and 2 in this offense and yet he still looked shaky. Tebow has only been in this offense for less than 2 months and it obviously shows.

However, he's made progress and done some things well tonight and had some not so good moments. What I liked most was that he was able to get points on the board while Mallett did nada.

Re: Re: Official Patriots vs Eagles Post Pre-Season Game Thread

Thompkins: Made the catches for Brady, but I wasn't seeing any great separation. A lot of that was route-related, though, so I thought it was a good start for him.

I'd agree his separation wasn't anything to write home about but I was impressed by how physical he was with the DB's he used that to create enough space to make the reception.

Dobson: He's got a long way to go. Whether it's because he's hit a bit of a plateau (he's been the weakest of the 3 rookies in recent practices, according to reports), or because he's just been over hyped is something to follow moving forward.

I thought he played well with the units run by Brady, he seemed very out of sync with Mallett and Tebow.

Offense: Rest almost everyone. no need to play anyone to risk injury.
Defense: Still needs a lot work. Hopefully mccourty returning will make the safety play better. Did Adrian wilson play ?

Asked Eagles LB DeMeco Ryans what his group takes from 4 days of work with the Patriots -- "Brady is still the man. Brady is still the man."

Suds: flashed a bit, but wasn't anything awe inspiring

OhOh: still not getting it done with the blocking

Blount: showed why he's been a 1000 yard rusher in the NFL

Boyce: I'll go with an incomplete. I didn't focus on him, and he wasn't a standout

Edelman: ball security clearly needs some work

Collins: stunk

T. Wilson: they might as well cut him now, if that's the best he's got

Gregory: still a day late on sideline throws

Ryan: stunk.... to be fair, the CB situation pretty much guaranteed this, given the absence of Dennard. He's obviously not ready to play and needs to be developed if he's going to be worth a damn, and we saw that tonight. This leads me to.....

I think this team really, really, really needs to find another CB somewhere.

I hope Talib doesn't get burned to much this season. Though that was a good catch by Jackon.

C for Tebow???.......are you talking about Tim Tebow, the 3rd string QB for the NE Patriots who went 4 for 12 tonight and was sacked 3 times because that Tebow deserved a big fat F. He was horrible.

With Tom, Dobson has at least 1 TD and probably eclipses 100 yards tonight.

Mallett came in and he missed him on a few and connected on a pass. I have a sense that had Mallett not gone out, him and Dobson would have connected on a few more.

And then Tebow came in and unless the receiver is running a screen or in the 1 in 15 shot Tebow actually throws a good pass that goes more than 10 yards and a guy can make a play on it, the receivers are just useless.

Honestly I think the RBs had as many receptions as the receivers when Tebow was in there.

Hell there was even one play where Dobson could have literally walked into the end zone if Tebow would have looked his way.

I look at it in context rather than pure isolation. This is the preseason and it's more so about making improvements than anything else especially with third string QBs. Tebow has improved since he's been here and that has to count for something. He'll never be a drop back pocket QB, that's just not in his DNA and as you noticed the Patriots weren't asking him to do those types of things.

In context, I think Tebow did some good things tonight and he's better now than he was at the start of training camp. For a third stringer in a new and complex offense for less than 2 months that's more than enough to ask for. Not many third stringers are putting on clinics across the league. Tebow's no different. To put it into perspective I was actually expecting him to be worse tonight.

First team looked great. Our D will be fine assuming we get people back from injury. Depth is a concern in a lot of places. Oline, interior Dline, secondary.

Travon Wilson will be fine, he just has to be utilized a certain way, not unlike Adrian Wilson.

The problem is we lack a backup free safety along the lines of Mccourty. Sometimes i think we should convert Dowling

Context??? He didn't play in a complex system tonight. They let him play his game and he stunk up the place.

He held on to the ball too long....his accuracy was terrible.....his decision making was bad.

I don't know what game you were watching tonight but Tim Tebow was the worst QB on the field tonight.....period......of either team.

I'm pretty sure converting Dowling to cover for possible injuries is a bad idea. It's a bit like buying a VHS for tips on repairing your VCR.

:D

I was watching the same game as everyone else...

Tebow was the worst QB on either roster going into the game so why I would expect it to be any different after the game? That point was moot.

He exceeded my expectations, that's why he got a C grade. Nothing more, nothing less. You can continue argue how bad he looked and whatnot, but I see improvements and for a third stringer that's all you can ask for.
