Re: Official Patriots vs Eagles Post Game Thread

I didn't watch the game, but based on reports it seems:

  • Thompkins and Sudfeld maintained their momentum.
  • Benard is directly up against Cunningham for a position (nominal edge rusher who really plays inside). That said, if they don't ONLY play inside, 2 guys could be used in the role.

Re: Official Patriots vs Eagles Post Game Thread

3 up:
1) Kenbrell Thompkins (Good separation and looked the ball in, might as well have been a TC practice for him because he played just as the reports indicated)
2) Lagarette Blount/Stevan Ridley (Ridley hit the hole hard and fast, he's still running a little high but thats something were going to have to live with, Blount had a game that I don't think he'll be able to replicate but he was tough to bring down which is consistent with the his scouting reports.)
3) Starting offensive line (especially the run blocking)

3 down:
1) Logan Ryan (looked terrible)
2) Steve Gregory/Tavon Wilson (making the same mistakes)
3) Gostowski (Inconsistent on kickoffs and just as shaky on FG attempts)

Re: Official Patriots vs Eagles Post Game Thread

Up:

KT - Really excited for this guy.
Sudsie - Great moves after the catch, he's gonna make us forget about the Serial Killer.
Blount - @_@
Benard - Lots of quality play from this guy, showed that he will stay in his lane.
Kelley - Wilfork and Kelley might be a dream tandem for us if he plays this well in the regular season.

Down:

Teebs - Love the kid but he's clearly struggling.
Mallett - Didn't look much better than Tebow.
Huhoh - Whiffed some blocks.
Tavon - Bad angles from last season persisting.
Ryan - His weakness was supposed to be with speed guys but he missed on some plays that were in front of him.

Mixed:

Dobson - Did some good stuff, dropped at least one catchable ball.
Boyce - Didn't do much but didn't seem like he got a lot of looks.

All in all a great first preseason game, it didn't get really sloppy until the 2nd half. If this is the sort of team we're bringing into the regular season then predictions of our demise are greatly exaggerated.

What are your thoughts on the game?

My 5 initial thoughts.

1. Blount is much faster than I thought.
2. Thompkins lived up to the hype, very physical WR reminded me a lot of Boldin in terms of playing style.
3. Brady is having more fun than he was the last couple years, I think all the youngsters have reinvigorated him some.
4. Tebow is bad; worse than I thought.
5. Jamie Collins is fun to watch out there, he's going to be a play maker.

Salivating at the thought of this running game and what it could mean for this offense. I hope these guys are all for real.

Tebow - I can't take anymore
Mallet - Not even close, still looks like a rookie
Running game - Nice, Blount made the team tonight, very nice.
First team - Looks like it's in gear.
Secondary - Can it be worse than last year? Yup.
Linebackers - Need a lot of work
D-Line - 1st team B+, after that B-
O-Line - 1st team A, after that C-

3) Gostowski (Inconsistent on kickoffs)

S.Gostkowski kicks 61 yards from NE 35 to PHI 4
S.Gostkowski kicks 71 yards from NE 35 to PHI -6(Boykin ran it out)
S.Gostkowski kicks 65 yards from NE 35 to end zone, Touchback.
S.Gostkowski kicks 65 yards from NE 35 to end zone, Touchback.

Seemed pretty consistent on kickoffs to me and the box score shows it.

I'm very interested in how you came away with him being inconsistent on kickoffs.

agree with these as well and I'd add Jamie Collins in here as well.

He was in position to make a couple of plays which is part 1 of 2. Unfortunately he didn't complete part 2 of 2. I will say he looks like the most competitive linebacker we have in coverage.

Agreed, can an offense be finesse AND physical ? Because that running game is just smash mouth football. That first drive was a thing of beauty. Blount showed more speed AND athleticism than I knew he had. Loved the way all the backs ran, hard !

Kenbrell came as advertised. He's the anti Ocho. Knows the offense better than Ocho ever did. Sudfeld looked great blocking, had a big block on the first play, the 62 yarder by Ridley, then had a nice block escorting Blount into the endzone on the ridiculous 51 yard run. Then when he caught his only pass, pulled a Gronk and bowled over a few players.

Dobson, mixed, made 2 good catches, dropped an easy one. Also didn't get a lot of separation on some patterns. Boyce was WIDE open for a TD on Mallett's overthrow.

Collins looked silly on his whiff on a wide open sack attempt. Looked like a rookie there. Kelly was a beast. Ballard was out there early on the first drive blocking, nice to see.

Overall, reason why the game was close, Tebow couldn't get a first down after his lone TD drive.

I could have sworn I remember Boykin feilding a kick at the 10 yard line after a running start. I remember thinking after the touchbacks "how is a kicker able to boom kicks out of the back of the endzone one kick and come up almost 20 yards shorter on another." I must be going crazy.

Color me perplexed. I have to ask. Did you stop watching the game after the 1st half because these don't make any sense at all.

Logan Ryan played a very good game. Justin Green, however, did not.
Gostkowski wasn't inconsistent on his kick-offs. Maybe you don't understand that BB decided to not allowed them to run the ball back after the 33 yard return because of the missed tackles. But every kick after the 1st two were done for touch backs.

What's a joke is that you don't even mention Tebow or Bolden who were ones who truly looked horrible tonight. Especially in comparison to what you mentioned.

Re: Official Patriots vs Eagles Post Game Thread

Ridley post game interview. This bruiser has a career post football as a commentator. Very well spoken. BB mind meld has taken well.

Rookie report:

Dobson's ability to generate separation will be something to monitor going forward. From an eye test it looked like he got little to no separation against the Eagles' first team corners. He may be at this point best suited to win 50-50 jump balls.

Collins was fairly nondescript. He had a few rookie moments against the Foles-led Eagles offense epecially that missed sack opportunity. The defense was fairly vanilla in the front seven tonight.

Harmon was up and down. One thing though, that we can count on, is that he can lay the lumber.

Boyce was invisible to me other than that egregious miss on Mallett's part. As I suspected, his game speed didn't match his fast 40 time.

PS: Before anyone goes on an tangent about that (again), what I mean is he ran a 4.38-40 with a broken toe therefore he could feasibly run in low 4.3s or high 4.2s if he wasn't injured - he never played up to those speeds at TCU. Tonight was really no different. I expected more out of him. First game jitters perhaps.

Buchanan & Beauharnais both looked like 7th rounders tonight. It wouldn't shock me to see either one of them or both land on the practice. Neither one is a lock by any stretch to make the roster.

Sudfeld is extremely athletic and his ability to run showed up multiple times tonight (Blount's frst TD). He looks elusive in the open field as well. Case study of him leads me to believe he's a lock for the 53.

Kenbrell Thompkins is the Patriots' most impressive rookie and it's not even close. If I didn't know who he was and where he was drafted and just casually watched tonight's game I would've thought he was a 5-8 year vet.

His ability to get open is marvellous. He does it with precise footwork and leverage. He and Brady have that connection already - you can tell because he was often Brady's first read, something I haven't seen from a Patriots rookie wide-out since 2002, if at all.

Thompkins' versatility in being able to play all 3 WR positions will make Pats fans quickly forget that the Patriots flirted with Emmanuel Sanders when the season starts, if it hasn't already.

Yet.. You must be.. :p:D

Glad to have you with the rest of us nuts...

I think the most interesting battle the rest of camp will be the starting WR spot across Amendola between Dobson and Thompkins. Dobson started there tonight.

From the practices (and the small sample from tonight) Thompkins is the superior route runner and gets better separation. Dobson is the better big play WR with superior catching in traffic.

It's great that both appear legit, but who do we want on the field more?

I agree with everything except for this Buchanan played a solid game, he took a ton of reps at LE and held against the run and created modest pressure. He was at the QB with Benard and helped wrap him up.

I'll toss out some takes, just a couple of players at a time. It'll be easier for the screaming to remain on point that way....

O-line: except for the RG, it was very solid early on. It seemed to tail off a bit, but I was happy to see what was going at the start.

Brady: Brady. 'nuff said, I think.

Ridley: Needs to get into better 'game' shape

Ben Vereen: I was surprised to find out he was on the roster tonight. He played well, though, so I'm looking forward to watching his relative play.

Thompkins: Made the catches for Brady, but I wasn't seeing any great separation. A lot of that was route-related, though, so I thought it was a good start for him.

Dobson: He's got a long way to go. Whether it's because he's hit a bit of a plateau (he's been the weakest of the 3 rookies in recent practices, according to reports), or because he's just been over hyped is something to follow moving forward.

Fells: Looked like he should have, at least when I was focused on him.

I question whether or not that the ball that Boyce missed in the Endzone was truly the fault of Mallett the way people on here are saying. I say this because, after reviewing it (love my DVR), it looks like Boyce actually picked it up late. That's why he only put one arm out for it and didn't lay out or jump for it with both arms extended. Had he picked it up earlier, I think he could have had both arms up and adjusted as needed and made the catch, no problem.
