Maroney is going to be a great RB for this team as early as next season. Yet people want to draft Bush and Leonard and sign bigger name FA's.
Theres really no need to do any of this.
maroney in playoffs:
jets: 18 for 69, 3.8 avg, 8 long, 0 TDs
chargers: 5 for 5, 1 avg, 5 long, 0 TDs
colts: 8 for 13, 1.6 avg, 9 long, 0 TDs
maroney started bad and got worse when he was needed most. dillon outpeformed maroney in all 3 post season games. if that makes you think maroney is a lock as a true #1 back and that we don't need a serious replacement for dillon then you need your head examined.
And you need to get your head out of 2004.
Dillon isn't even half the back he was two years ago. It's all uphill for Maroney from here, and all downhill for Dillon. Get with the program. The Pats did NOT invest a 1st round pick in Laurence Maroney to take a back seat to a RB like McGahee.
How the hell did Dillon outperform Maroney in the Jets game?
Yes, the Pats will need somebody to fill Dillon's roster spot. It could be a T.J. Duckett, it could be a mid-round draft pick, but it most certainly will NOT be Willis McGahee.

dillon against jets in playoffs 10 carries, 53 yards, 5.3 avg, 13 long and 1 TD. thats better than maroney. and i never said keep dillon. i said get some legitimate to replace him because it's a huge question mark if maroney can be a true #1.
Look at Maroney's season. He averaged 4+ yards a carry and 750 yards; he very likely would have rushed for 1k if he got more touches and didn't go down with the injury. He missed two games to injury and played injured for much of the second half of the season; he's a threat to catch the ball out of the backfield. What indication does he give you that he's not a number one back. I think we draft a running back in the third round, Tony Hunt tickles my fancy.

maroney's performance deteriorated throughout the season, culminating in this dismal playoff performance.
jets: 18 for 69, 3.8 avg, 8 long, 0 TDs
chargers: 5 for 5, 1 avg, 5 long, 0 TDs
colts: 8 for 13, 1.6 avg, 9 long, 0 TDs
total: 31 for 2.8 avg, 9 long, 0 TDs
im not saying he's to be written off. but i am challenging all those who have annointed him the future already.
You're going to condemn Maroney for life because he had a stretch of a few bad games?
Look at his numbers in the last few games of the season. Keep in mind he was also playing with BROKEN RIBS!
It's called a rookie wall. It's called a pass-heavy offense in San Diego. It's called an abysmal time of possession in Indy.
maroney's performance was declining well before the injury.
newton_tom_cat said:what it really shows is once defenses started keying on him - like they would with a #1 bacl - his performance dropped off to unacceptable levels.
newton_tom_cat said:he doesn't scare anyone now. could he ultimately be a true #1 back? possibly, he is fast. is it a guarantee he's "the guy" like most on this board assume? definitely not, the cut list is filled with fast guys.

You're arguments are foolish. You are clueless.

How does your AVG get affected by "abysmal time of possesion." ? Maybe absymal time of possesion is because you avg under two yards a carry for two consecutive playoff games.
The fact of the matter is, after the first 4 games of the 2006 season, some people thought the Pats had the best running offense in the league because they had two starting backs splitting time. By the playoffs, it had evaporated. Maroney has been tapped as the man of the future but may not be there yet. Every running back is absolutely slammed with injuries by week 10 - and most starters had twice as many carries as he did.
There needs to be a quality replacement for Dillon to help facilitate the upbringing of Maroney - and his OC didn't help him along IMO.

All four teams in the championship games this year had 2 RB systems. This philosophy works. No one wants the next Terrell Davis who can't walk when he is 26.
