Maroney wants Gary Russell drafted here for new RB partner

Laurence Maroney seeing that Corey is gone talked to former Gopher teammate RB Gary Russell yesterday and emphatically would love to see his ex-college teammate join forces together once again...I think that might be a first in the NFL if it happens and for Maroney's sake I hope we do take a chance on Gary,He has had troubles in college but has the talent to overcome them in the pros...He will probably still be around by the 3rd round..that would be a good pickup IMO.

His academics may suggest he struggles with reading/comprehension/self discipline, but the kid did enroll at a JUCO for 2006 to try and get his grades up, a point in his favor. I wouldn't be prepared to write him off yet, he may not be academically gifted, but his intelligence and ability to absorb a playbook and understand the technical aspects of his "job" shouldn't be measured solely off his report card - his scouting report could indicate he's a one rep learner on the practice field, certainly his talent running the ball is worthy of consideration.

News reports quote his agent as saying the Patriots have agreed to release him on March 2nd...for what an agent's story is worth.

Dillon's agent, Steve Feldman, said that his client will ask the Patriots for his release and that the team is likely to grant it by March 2, the start of free agency.

Sounds like another agent spouting off.

I hadn't paid a lot of attention to Russell at first because he doesn't fit the "big back" profile of a Dillon replacement. But the more I look, the more I like. Powerful for his size, a strong inside runner with some explosiveness and good hands. Plus a nice low stance, rare in a draft class full of upright runners. If his lousy work habits are limited to the classroom, could be a nice mid-round pickup.

are u saying ^that against Dillon? If so..its not hard to be slower and younger than Dillon now a days..

If your comparing him against Russell..he doesnt compare anything as a runner. He might have more versatility but Gary is faster, strong runner and more explosive

Leonard is overrated. Hes trying to play his game after Craig..yes he lost weight and might have the RB mentality but hes not as powerful as people make him out to be
