Laurence Maroney seeing that Corey is gone talked to former Gopher teammate RB Gary Russell yesterday and emphatically would love to see his ex-college teammate join forces together once again...I think that might be a first in the NFL if it happens and for Maroney's sake I hope we do take a chance on Gary,He has had troubles in college but has the talent to overcome them in the pros...He will probably still be around by the 3rd round..that would be a good pickup IMO.

he would love to..i would love to and any fan of a good player would love to but this kid had terrible grades in school and was kicked out academic reasons

May we have a source/link for this report? Thank You.

His academics may suggest he struggles with reading/comprehension/self discipline, but the kid did enroll at a JUCO for 2006 to try and get his grades up, a point in his favor. I wouldn't be prepared to write him off yet, he may not be academically gifted, but his intelligence and ability to absorb a playbook and understand the technical aspects of his "job" shouldn't be measured solely off his report card - his scouting report could indicate he's a one rep learner on the practice field, certainly his talent running the ball is worthy of consideration.

am I missing something? Is Dillon officially gone? has the team released him or has he filed his retirment papers?

News reports quote his agent as saying the Patriots have agreed to release him on March 2nd...for what an agent's story is worth.

Link?

I guess time will tell. I'm surprised they are letting him walk with the full signing bonus, unless they negotiated payback of some of it.

Maybe we should sign Drew Henson too.

Manny Ramirez from the hardball team comes to mind, but there are tons of differences with that situation.

The Red Sox wanted to get rid of him. So much so in fact they put him on irrevocable waivers and had no takers.

I hadn't paid a lot of attention to Russell at first because he doesn't fit the "big back" profile of a Dillon replacement. But the more I look, the more I like. Powerful for his size, a strong inside runner with some explosiveness and good hands. Plus a nice low stance, rare in a draft class full of upright runners. If his lousy work habits are limited to the classroom, could be a nice mid-round pickup.

I read something like that on the Patriots.com media blitz page today,I don't know where the original poster got it from..maybe same place?

Hes gone..Get over it...Ain't no miracles gonna happen, moving on .

Then I hope the Pats draft him. Whatever the tightness wants, he should get.

I guarantee they draft Brian Leonard from Rutgers. Youger, faster and can really catch and block...

are u saying ^that against Dillon? If so..its not hard to be slower and younger than Dillon now a days..

If your comparing him against Russell..he doesnt compare anything as a runner. He might have more versatility but Gary is faster, strong runner and more explosive

Leonard is overrated. Hes trying to play his game after Craig..yes he lost weight and might have the RB mentality but hes not as powerful as people make him out to be

Amazing. The story thats not a story still going. The agent and Dillon have made statements, but the Pats? Not a word.

Here's the latest from PFT. Sounds more likely than the agents take:

PATS NOT EXPECTED TO LET DILLON WALK

"Amid all of the talk over the past couple of days regarding the looming release of running back Corey Dillon, has anyone else noticed that one key aspect of the relationship has been conspicuously quiet?

The Patriots, to be specific.

So until the team that holds Dillon's rights says that it's going to let him walk away with nothing in return (and potentially sign with the Jets or the Bills, if they move Willis McGahee), we aren't buying any of it.

And several league insiders agree. "Bill Belichick isn't going to let him just leave," said one source on Saturday.

Stay tuned."

why wouldnt Patriots let him go? Save cap for a guy who doesnt want to be here

I'd do it. Academics and the football field are different things.
