Good sign for the Patriots receiving corps: Julian Edelman, removed from PUP, is on the field for first time this training camp.

BB's remarks probably motivated him. Belichick on Edelman missing time: "He watches, goes to meetings, but can't participate in anything. It certainly doesn't put him ahead." Says Edes "has a lot of ground to make up."

Dobson back from the dead today too!

Just saw that. Good news!

If anyone's been paying attention, has Washington been taking the punt return duties to go along with kickoff return?

Edelman is one of the best punt returners in football, it's good to have him on the field again. He needs to stay healthy and be Amendola's backup. Amendola, Dobson, Boyce, Thomkins and Jenkins are ahead of him right now. Get to work Julian !

For now, just for now.

It will always be there lurking for him, but I hope he lasts the season and earns himself a pay day.

The open question is whether Edelman can be counted on to be more than a punt returner. If not, In any case, I think that we need to keep five position receivers, given that our draftees are locks to make the roster. I am fine with using a roster spot for one of the best punt returners in the NFL.

Given the events of last season, and all the Edelman praise, Edelman should be WR2 the moment he steps on the field.

Given the quality of our other receivers, Edelman might indeed be the #2 WR the moment that he steps on the field.

Absolutely. I wasn't being facetious. Edelman started off last season as the WR2 in 2WR sets. Nothing's happened since the start of the offseason and the departure of Welker and Lloyd to change that, unless the team somehow feels that Jenkins (not likely) or Dobson (more likely, but there's still the whole rookie thing) has had some level of camp success enough to dethrone the reigning WR2.

Edelman needs to stay healthy...

The haters won't like this type of stuff. Knock it off.

I don't know if there is anyone who thinks Edelman is a bad punt returner. There are plenty of us who don't believe Edelman has shown the ability to adequately replace Welker's production but that makes perfect sense has he really hasn't shown that, but even with that said I and i would think pretty much everyone who has doubted him in that regard still want him to go out and have a great season, they could really use the production.

Yeah, I was surprised to find out that Edelman is #4 all-time in yards per return (NFL Career Yards per Punt Return Leaders - Pro-Football-Reference.com) though he won't be on the NFL's official leaderboard until he gets three more returns (takes 75 returns to qualify and he only has 72).

(The official list is at Top 20 - Punt Return Average)

That #4 is according to PFR. According to the HOF link above, which is a bit out of date, Edelman will be the #1 PR of all time, at least for a while, if he gets 11 yards total on his first three returns. [Hester's average is now about 12.1.]

As an Edelman fan, I consider it absurd to think that Edelman can, or ever will, replace Welker's (receiving) production. That's simply not realistic. He needs to stay healthy, which he has never been able to do, to date. If he can do that, I believe between kick returns and receptions he can be a very valuable player on this team. But, it's a big if.

Edelman's comments after coming off the PUP list today: "Train's moving & I've got to catch up."

and this from Field Yates, "One more note on Julian Edelman: Early in practice, the quarterbacks and offensive skill players take part in a "pat-and-go" drill in which a quarterback pats the football, signaling for the skill player to run down the field before he arcs a throw to him. Tom Brady, perhaps as a preservation method, would throw to the first two receivers in line, then allow an assistant equipment manager to throw to the remaining receivers, except Edelman. Brady, who has always spoken highly of Edelman's work ethic, stepped up to throw to Edelman when he was up in the drill."

good...now can he stay healthy is the big ?
