Per Tom Curran

My dark horse wideout candidate Lavelle Hawkins had his contract terminated. Nick McDonald and Ashford were waived.

I didn't think that you could waive injured players like McDonald.

What a surprise, said no one ever.

I assume it was the "waived/injured" designation, like what was used when the Pats waived T.J. Moe or when the Giants let Jake Ballard go.

Presuming the player clears waivers the club can reach an injury settlement, or retain his rights by placing him on Injured Reserve. Since it is still pre-season players cannot be placed directly on IR at this point in time.

If they go the injury settlement route then McDonald could in theory rejoin the team later (e.g., like Dane Fletcher last year), or sign with another club (e.g., like Ross Ventrone last year)

I'm a little curious about who they'll bring in to replace them, but then they'll almost certainly be cut in the end anyways.

Hope McDonald was waived/injured so at least it would mean the team wants to keep him. He looked good when he was out there, but can't seem to stay healthy.

With Nick McDonald gone that ironically opens the door up for his brother Chris to make the club.

Current interior offensive line backup depth:

  • Dan Connolly (assuming Marcus Cannon starts at RG)
  • Chris McDonald
  • Josh Kline
  • Tyronne Green

well that didnt take as long as I expected.

am I confused or dont we have a long way to go til cut-down day (see notes from Morgan below). So BB must be definitely trying to get McDonald on IR - early while other teams are busy and not thinking about adding anybody elses castoffs.

Key dates..........
Tues Aug 27: Roster cutdown to a maximum of 75 players, 4:00 PM
...
Sat Aug 31: Roster cutdown to a maximum of 53 players, 6:00 PM.

I think he has to be injured if they're waiving him now.

Hawkins looked nondescript when I saw his reps...not surprised one bit, although the early cut seems to signify another move or three?

A sign that the Pats like what they see from Boyce and Thompkins at WR?

A sign that the Pats like what they see from Leon Washington at KR?

Or both?

Maybe a sign they didn't like what they saw in Perez and Hawkins.

Kind of liked Nick McDonald. I thought he had good versatility and was worth keeping. Apparently Belichick disagrees with my awesome thoughts once again ;)

EDIT: I suppose that he was more injured than I initially thought. For some reason I was under the impression that he was on his way back.

All depends on if the glass is half full or half empty I suppose.

To be fair, McDonald was signed in 2011 - so I'm not sure if he should be lumped in with Jones and Jenkins.

Injuries happen. It's too bad he couldn't stay healthy because there were times he looked good when given the opportunity in his first year with the team.

McDonald has been around, too. I was referring to the stiffs that got signed for the WR position. My bad for not being clear enough.

It is a sign that Hawkins sux.

After all, if he were any good at all, he would have been kept for awhile in case of injuries.

When does McDonald's contract end? I imagine that has a lot of effect on whether teams would or wouldn't want him on their IR.

If he's in the last year, I can't imagine why anybody would take him off waivers except in the hope of him actually playing this year.

I don't know how many hints we have to the severity of his injury, but I was never under the impression that he was in danger of missing the entire year.

Of course the information has been pretty limited regarding his situation, so it's probably very difficult to speculate one way or another.
