Breaking: No more AFC vs NFC Pro Bowl

True, at least in the NHL version of this draft you have active players making the choices.

I think Brady and Peyton should be captains making picks for their own teams.

Probably not a great idea to have current players making the draft selections, could cause some friction.

Regarding the idea of flag football:

It does not have to be played in sand.

Split up into four teams and have two games played simultaneously (sideline to sideline) at the stadium. The two winning teams then play for the 'championship' either after a rest period, or the following day. If you add in some of the skill competitions then you could make it like a track and field meet, for most competitions being won determining that year's overall champions. Rather than a contrived draft you could start out with four teams: AFC offense, AFC defense and special teams, NFC offense, and NFC defense and special teams.

As a bonus we get to watch Vince Wilfork at QB.

:woot:

Only fantasy geeks and people who call Calvin Johnson "Megatron" would get excited about this...

It could but I think players choosing would be less of a problem than if the coaches do the choosing.

The NHL is doing this, so far there hasn't been a problem there...

I'd still think that having active players or coaches doing the drafting could be an issue. Having retired guys do it (either coaches or players) makes sense to me.

Per your NHL comment, I could easily be wrong :)

I just see ego's getting involved. Some defensive guy is going to get all bent out of shape that Brady chose someone else over him.

You saw what happened to Cam at the PB when ego's got involved, right ?

Looks like the story I linked to early in this thread has been updated.

The Pro Bowl player draft will air on Wednesday, January 22 on NFL Network. Players will practice with their teams on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The coaching staffs will be from the losing teams in the AFC and NFC Divisional playoffs with the best regular-season record. The 2014 Pro Bowl takes place on Sunday, January 26 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii, and will be televised by NBC.

“We were very receptive to the ideas that Domonique and the players put forth,” said NFL Commissioner ROGER GOODELL. “From there, our office worked closely with him in developing the concept. The players made it clear that they wanted to continue the Pro Bowl and were committed to making it better than ever. We think these changes will enhance the game for both fans and players.”

In addition to these changes, several other aspects of the Pro Bowl will be new in 2014:

Game within the Game – A two-minute warning will be added to the first and third quarters and the ball will change hands after each quarter. This will increase the opportunities for quarterbacks to direct “two-minute drills,” which are especially exciting for fans.
No Kickoffs – The coin toss will determine which team is awarded possession first. The ball will be placed on the 25-yard line at the start of each quarter and after scoring plays.
Rosters – The rosters will continue to consist of 43 players per squad. The kick return specialist will be replaced by an additional defensive back.
Cover Two and Press Coverage – The defense will be permitted to play “cover two” and “press” coverage. In previous years, only “man” coverage was permitted, except for goal line situations.
Stopping of the Game Clock – Beginning at the two-minute mark of every quarter, if the offense does not gain at least one yard, the clock will stop as if the play were an incomplete pass. This rule will make the team with the ball attempt to gain yardage toward the end of each quarter.
Game Timing – The game clock will start after an incomplete pass on the signal of the referee, except inside the last two minutes of the first half and the last five minutes of the second half.
Play Clock – A 35-second/25-second play clock will be adopted instead of the typical 40-second/25-second clock.
Sacks – The game clock will not stop on quarterback sacks outside of the final two minutes of the game. Currently, the game clock stops in these situations outside of two minutes of the second and fourth quarters.

What has two thumbs and still won't be watching the Pro Bowl?

This guy.

Not that I needed another reason to not watch the pro bowl, but I guess this is it.

Hating things before you've tried them is probably why you are a virgin.

Wasn't there a skills competition years ago? Not at the pro bowl but sometime in the offseason? I thought I remembered Brady winning some passing competition....

Yeah there used to be a televised QB challenge with a handful of QBs each year. I remember watching this in the 90s all the time. In fact, I remember specifically really falling in love with the Pats and Drew Bledsoe in '94 due to his appearance on it. I would've been 15 and my interest in NFL really took off that year...

A Pro Bowl football game where they change the rules of football. :bricks:

I can't wait to not watch it. I wish it was tonight, so I could not watch it right away.

I haven't read anything outside of this thread on this topic, but have they said what they are going to call the teams? Sticking with AFC and NFC wouldn't make sense if the teams can be drafted from a league wide pool.

They could something where the names could rotate to honor great coaches or teams, like Team Lombardi vs. Team Walsh or the '85 Bears vs. the '72 Dolphins.

Mods, please delete all subsequent posts and close this thread! ;)

hmmmmmm......

WHY does it seem like all these rules seem to be GoToHell's personal WISH-LIST for the "NFL Rules of the Game - 2015 Season".

Is this his trial-run to break-down our resistance to elimination of kick-offs etc.

If these type rules ever transfer over to the real game...... say hello to ARENA FOOTBALL on a bigger field.:bricks:

I'll give it a view - at least once

I had the exact same thoughts. It would be a shame.

I actually think this is more about finding a way to get fan engagement — and money via special selection shows — before the game. They should be able to wring at least one extra show out of this.

By the way, how amazing that amid all these changes, the position "Fullback" remains on the ballot (apparently).

I can't believe this horsecrap. It's like they're catering to the video-game obsession of 14-year-olds. Just get rid of the damn game and have an awards show.

I was just about to post this very thought.

I seem to remember there being some type of competition on NFL network, possibly between 2004-2006. I remember Adam Vinatieri going up against the Colts kicker at the time I think. I also remember it being in Hawaii and also Rich Eisen sang "Tiny Bubbles" along side Don Ho. Can't remember anything else about it though. Perhaps it was just a one time special competition type thing.
