It's the same reason he doesn't want to come back, that's why they agreed for the good of the team to release him.

The only possible reason Dillon won't retire is to try to get into the Hall of Fame.

Can't blame him for that. He's proud, he's taken a lot of crap and he deserves it.

836 more yards and he passes Thurman Thomas for 12th all time. Is that enough?

He gained 812 last year, so it would take a year or 2 as a Pat.

But, there's more. This is why he would be a distraction on the Patriots.

1 Emmitt Smith 18,355
2 Walter Payton 16,726
3 Barry Sanders 15,269
4 CURTIS MARTIN 14,101
5 Jerome Bettis 13,653
6 Eric ****erson 13,259
7 Tony Dorsett 12,739
8 Jim Brown 12,312
9 Marcus Allen 12,243
10 MARSHALL FAULK 12,162
11 Franco Harris 12,120
12 Thurman Thomas 12,074

13 John Riggins 11,352
14 COREY DILLON 11,238

Once he matches Thomas, he needs only 238 yards to pass Jim Brown at #9.

We are talking media frenzy, folks. 46 yards to Franco Harris, 42 yards to Marshall Faulk, 81 yards to Marcus Allen, 69 yards to Jim Brown.

Meanwhile, do we sit Maroney on the bench for a year or two while Corey goes for guaranteed, (if he passes Jim brown), HOF?

Or do we sit Dillon With media from all over the world waiting for ourbackup to get in the game?

Pretty good idea to release him, I say. We need to develop Maroney and I can't blame Corey for dragging those bones out there another year when the hall is that close.

I think you are onto something here. Who needs a grumpy Dillon on the team.

I can see Borges and Felger now talking about how the big bad Belichick is not treating Dillon with "respect"

It's not even about being grumpy. He easily gains 8oo+ yards next year or the year after. Once he passes Thomas he'll be passing a running back every week, most of them hall of famers.

The media will go nuts!! Do we sit Maroney so Corey can pass Franco Harris?

Why isn't Dillon playing he only needs thirty yards to pass Marshall Faulk??-Thurman Thomas???? Marcus Allen??? Jim Brown???

The one who'll be grumpy is Belichick. And Maroney!

Yesyes, and I hope he achieves his goal (though I'd prefer it not be on a rival team, especially one in our division) . But anyway...
He's always had that 'something to prove' attitude and it certainly served the Pats well during his tenure here so your scenario wouldn't surprise me in the least. It doesn't make him a bad person;he's had an amazing career and HOF would be a fitting end to it.
I don't see the Pats being in a position to sacrifice in order to help him achieve this, however. It's not the same thing as giving Vinny his final TD or letting Flutie make that drop-kick.

I'm not much for individual honors, but that's not more than an average year or two to Pass Jim Brown and HOF.

But passing a HOFer every week for 4-5 weeks? The media will go nuts and it would be a tremendous distraction and detriment to Maroney's development.

Maybe his agent came up with the idea, but why wouldn't he try it.

Face it. The Pats and Corey talked and it's to their mutual benefit he make his HOF run somewhere else.

Go Corey!!!

If it's on the Jets, we'll just have to kick his ass.

No hard feelings, brother!:D

Until I see the Patriots release Dillon I won't believe it. How come they haven't released a statement on this issue?

His agent said March 2. Can't imagine them ever releasing any info before they have to.

Poppy****. Belichick is the master of defusing distraction. Corey isn't playing here because he doesn't represent value at $5.5M in 2007. End of story. He only comes back somewhere else if they are willing to pay him more than the $2.5M he would have made here had he been willing to continue to play for straight salary. Corey doesn't have another 800+ yard season in him, and if he did it would generate about as much media frenzy in Boston as the last time he passed someone on the list and nobody could figure out why they were handing him the ball on the sidelines until they put it up on the jumbotron.

Conspiracy theorists...

It IS fun though.:rocker: I'm not sure they let him go(IF they are indeed letting him go) because of any distraction, but the stats MAY be a reason for Corey to seek status elsewhere should he decide not to retire.
Dillon knows his play time here will diminish and the Pats know he's pretty pricey for a back-up who's ripe for injury should he actually even get that kind of playing time to begin with.
Now put him on another team who's style is less physical and/or one in a weaker division, and who knows.
**Which is why the Jets may NOT be the team he'd flourish on anyway.
Unfortunately he is an injury-risk.

They released a statement on Asante on a Friday and the franchise deadline wasn't until the following Thursday the 22nd.

He's still on the team as of right now.

He has had a great career but I doubt it has anything at all to do with why the Patriots would release him. He is showing his true colors as a greedy, selfish player. The Patriots saved his career and legacy, without the NE ring he would be a borderline HOF, with 1000 more yards he is now a lock.

The Patriots releasing him will be based purely on value and production not Corey's feelings or nonsense about a media distraction.

His best chance to reach the HOF is to stay with NE. I think he is crazy to want to leave. At his age the Patriots can place him in an ideal situation. If he played here 2 more years he would get about 1300-1600 yards and be neck and neck with Marcus Allen plus he will have 15-25 more TDs and maybe another ring.

Personally, I will miss his nose for the endzone but am tired of seeing him pull himself out after every play (tapping his hand on his helmet or just running off the field). I don't know how he expects to be a feature back when he can't stay on the field for more than two plays without getting gassed.

In some ways he reminds me of Canseco, both put up great numbers but could have done more. With a little more desire, CD could be a top 5 back of all time, one of the best power \ speed ratios I have ever seen (now way he is 225, more like 250 and still decent speed).

For the most part I agree with you...It is about value and he been a model citizen here in NE...I am glad Corey was here and for his ring....To show how a team is supposed to run....

About the only thing we agree on is he won't be cut over a potential distraction. But once again I hate how NE fandom loves to rip 'em a new one on the way out of town. And we wonder why they don't all just want to stay and play here for nothing...

Every time he takes the field, especially in that position, he risks not being able to think straight like TJ or not be able to play with his young kids or enjoy the fruits of a long career in retirement. There is a price at which players are often willing to continue that risk even when every fiber of their being is screaming Nooooo... and we aren't offering him that price. It may be nobody does, which would likely be better for Corey Dillon the man in the long run. But if they do he has every right to re-think his position, which is all I think he has tried to say. His agent and the typical NE fan mentality is just making something pretty cut and dried unnecessarily nasty and complicated. But what else is new...

Here is some speculation on the topic from profootballtalk.com:

PATS NOT EXPECTED TO LET DILLON WALK

Amid all of the talk over the past couple of days regarding the looming release of running back Corey Dillon, has anyone else noticed that one key aspect of the relationship has been conspicuously quiet?

The Patriots, to be specific.

So until the team that holds Dillon's rights says that it's going to let him walk away with nothing in return (and potentially sign with the Jets or the Bills, if they move Willis McGahee), we aren't buying any of it.

And several league insiders agree. "Bill Belichick isn't going to let him just leave," said one source on Saturday.

Stay tuned.

Spare me with the holier than thou crap...

What is your point? He is no different than any other player who "risks not being able to think straight". If he said, I have done a lot in my career and want to retire I would be the first to congratulate him and wish him all the best. It sounds like to me he is just trying to weasel out of a contract after year 2 of 5 because there may be more money available in free agency.

The Patriots and Dillion worked out a new deal after the 2004 season, neither side was under any obligation to redo the deal. His contract was not exactly league minimim, and here is the important part "he thought it was good enough to sign in 2005" but now wants out.

Maybe the NFL should just let every player in the league change team each year if they want more "touches" or more money.

The Patriots put him in a great position to succeed but he is putting Corey before the team, just like he did for the Bengals.

You're right. He just did it by releasing Dillon, (If they do it by March 2).

I doubt if he makes the hall of fame no matter how many yards he gets (well, unless he gets into the top five, which he won't). In spite of his stats, his years in Cinci were pretty much incognito, and he had the bad rep. He had one pro bowl year in New England. He'll be like Jim Rice in baseball, whose numbers aren't that huge, but he was still the most feared hitter in baseball during his prime.

Bert Blyleven, Tommy John, Gerald Perry, Jim Kaat had 300 or near 300 wins and they haven't made the baseball HOF. A comparable in football is Art Monk, except Art didn't have a bad rep. Art is tied for 6th all time in receptions and 11th in receiving yards.

Of course, it will take a long time to find out who is right about Corey, that is, yea or nay for the hall of fame. He may make it a lot of years down the road on a "slow" year.
