Why the Patriots don't want Dillon back

It's the same reason he doesn't want to come back, that's why they agreed for the good of the team to release him.

The only possible reason Dillon won't retire is to try to get into the Hall of Fame.

Can't blame him for that. He's proud, he's taken a lot of crap and he deserves it.

836 more yards and he passes Thurman Thomas for 12th all time. Is that enough?


He gained 812 last year, so it would take a year or 2 as a Pat.

But, there's more. This is why he would be a distraction on the Patriots.

Meanwhile, do we sit Maroney on the bench for a year or two while Corey goes for guaranteed, (if he passes Jim brown), HOF?

Or do we sit Dillon With media from all over the world waiting for ourbackup to get in the game?

Pretty good idea to release him, I say. We need to develop Maroney and I can't blame Corey for dragging those bones out there another year when the hall is that close.

It's not even about being grumpy. He easily gains 8oo+ yards next year or the year after. Once he passes Thomas he'll be passing a running back every week, most of them hall of famers.

He's always had that 'something to prove' attitude and it certainly served the Pats well during his tenure here so your scenario wouldn't surprise me in the least. It doesn't make him a bad person;he's had an amazing career and HOF would be a fitting end to it.
I don't see the Pats being in a position to sacrifice in order to help him achieve this,however. It's not the same thing as giving Vinny his final TD or letting Flutie make that drop-kick.

He only comes back somewhere else if they are willing to pay him more than the $2.5M he would have made here had he been willing to continue to play for straight salary. It IS fun though.:rocker: I'm not sure they let him go(IF they are indeed letting him go) because of any distraction,but the stats MAY be a reason for Corey to seek status elsewhere should he decide not to retire.
Dillon knows his play time here will diminish and the Pats know he's pretty pricey for a back-up who's ripe for injury should he actually even get that kind of playing time to begin with.
Now put him on another team who's style is less physical and/or one in a weaker division,and who knows.
**Which is why the Jets may NOT be the team he'd flourish on anyway.
Unfortunately he is an injury-risk.

Personally, I will miss his nose for the endzone but am tired of seeing him pull himself out after every play (tapping his hand on his helmet or just running off the field). I don't know how he expects to be a feature back when he can't stay on the field for more than two plays without getting gassed.

In some ways he reminds me of Canseco, both put up great numbers but could have done more. With a little more desire, CD could be a top 5 back of all time, one of the best power \ speed ratios I have ever seen (now way he is 225, more like 250 and still decent speed).

For the most part I agree with you...It is about value and he been a model citizen here in NE...I am glad Corey was here and for his ring....To show how a team is supposed to run....

There is a price at which players are often willing to continue that risk even when every fiber of their being is screaming Nooooo... and we aren't offering him that price. It may be nobody does, which would likely be better for Corey Dillon the man in the long run. But if they do he has every right to re-think his position, which is all I think he has tried to say. What is your point? He is no different than any other player who "risks not being able to think straight". If he said, I have done a lot in my career and want to retire I would be the first to congratulate him and wish him all the best. It sounds like to me he is just trying to weasel out of a contract after year 2 of 5 because there may be more money available in free agency.

The Patriots and Dillion worked out a new deal after the 2004 season, neither side was under any obligation to redo the deal. His contract was not exactly league minimim, and here is the important part "he thought it was good enough to sign in 2005" but now wants out.

Maybe the NFL should just let every player in the league change team each year if they want more "touches" or more money.

The Patriots put him in a great position to succeed but he is putting Corey before the team, just like he did for the Bengals.

I doubt if he makes the hall of fame no matter how many yards he gets (well, unless he gets into the top five, which he won't). In spite of his stats, his years in Cinci were pretty much incognito, and he had the bad rep. He had one pro bowl year in New England. He'll be like Jim Rice in baseball, whose numbers aren't that huge, but he was still the most feared hitter in baseball during his prime.

Bert Blyleven, Tommy John, Gerald Perry, Jim Kaat had 300 or near 300 wins and they haven't made the baseball HOF. A comparable in football is Art Monk, except Art didn't have a bad rep. Art is tied for 6th all time in receptions and 11th in receiving yards.

Of course, it will take a long time to find out who is right about Corey, that is, yea or nay for the hall of fame. He may make it a lot of years down the road on a "slow" year.
