Corey Dillon [stats]’s probably not retiring. He’s just leaving the Patriots [team stats].
Speaking to FSN New England’s Greg ****erson yesterday, Dillon backed off comments he made in the Globe, when he said he was preparing to call it a career. Blaming himself for the “miscommunication,” he said retirement is just one option.
He was far clearer on his Patriots career, saying a return “is not going to happen.” He entered training camp last July knowing this would be his final year in a Patriots uniform. He has already won a Super Bowl and set a franchise record for rushing yards in a season.
“Been there, done that,” he said.
With a salary cap hit of $4.4 million, Dillon will likely be released by the end of next week. Free agency begins March 2 and Dillon will theoretically be a part of it, angling for one last lead running back job.
“Right now it’s too early to be talking about football,” he said. “I’m just enjoying my time off.”
