I fail to see the issue. If this was an incident that affected the company I work for, I would not be allowed to discuss it with the media, and probably told not to discuss it with anyone. And even if allowed, the company would limit what I could say. Sounds like BB follows policies that most corporation impose.

Idiot waited all that time to have his account approved and then tried spamming. Unreal

This has been my experience also. I don't think any organization would appreciate anyone other than a designated spokesperson talking to the media. It works to the players' advantage too, there's a clear policy that allows them to decline to comment.

Well, the details are interesting, but it still seems intended more as a "hit job" than a "behind the scenes look."

The more I read it I thought the same thing. I did think the fact the "conduct detrimental" is a real penalty and a fine could be issued was interesting considering most media people think players are just being difficult. They don't realize the $$ involved if players talk ;)

Nice article. Thanks for posting.

To be honest I am not too worried about this enormous distraction that many feel will happen. Luckily, we've had some time to adjust in the period of the past month or so, and we all know that Belichick will certainly be on top of it come Friday.

I am much more concerned with the usual: injuries, a (supposed) lack of obvious talent at some positions, and the normal challenges that lie ahead every year.

Agreed. This is /or should be normal corporate response to any kind of media situation that could affect the corporate image or product.

Use of the word "FEAR" in the article is a bit over the top - trying for the attention grabbing headline.

That BB uses the 'conduct detrimental' rule as a tool to fine players as a means to enforce discipline...... ok, I think we knew that (if not the specifics - we knew the gist of it).

Only thing mildly surprising to me is that Klecko seems to imply BB will cut guys for speaking 2x to the media out of turn. Maybe for the bottom 10 on the roster; but I'm not so sure any of the top 30 would get cut that quickly.

Good read, even if the "shocking" news; doesnt seem so shocking to me. And w/ preseason about to kick off and 20-30 guys on each team about to lose their jobs; I think there are a lot more stories that will fill up the press pages than this one.

The journalism profession is tied closely to the role it plays in a democracy and maintaining a civil society. It has an essential role to investigate and uncover the truth about the political and social reality of the nation. That's where the values come from that cause an article like this to be written. Because of that, it is protected and entitled in its quest to investigate and report.

Unfortunately, those principles don't translate well to sports. Nobody is going to make the case that society is harmed because we don't know what Pats management is thinking and doing about Hernandez, or how the players are thinking about it.

But the sports media doesn't make the differentiation, and because of that, we get articles like this, which infer that something is wrong because the Pats put the clamp on players talking.

You have one team, one leader and one message, everything needs to stay on the same track to keep everything focused.....

Dealing with media distractions will only make the media salivate for more..

Every day I read in the local news from the local azz clown sports scribes, who believe that BB owes us fans some type of explanation, and the necessity of such. When TC opens it will be chaotic, hope that BB takes the time to deal with the press prior to Friday.. and puts this whole thing before TC starts.

Great article.

From a media frenzy point of view, the Hernandez situation is worrisome. Dennard's crap doesn't help, especially with a court appearance coming next week.

This thing - the Odin Lloyd murder - is in a class by itself. Spygate was awful, but at least that happened in the regular season when there were 32 real stories to report every week, and the team roster was set. This story is much more salacious and there will be guys experiencing their first ever Patriots training camp.

It will be interesting to see who from the national media will be assigned to Patriots' camp this year. My guess is that the toughest investigative reporters will be there this week. Guys like Jay Glazer from ESPN, Michael Rosenberg from SI, David Epstein from SI, Mark Fainaru-Wade from SF, and Bill Pennington from the NY Times will make life difficult.

Those of you that head down for the public sessions of training camp should keep an eye out for national media investigative types. The Patriots will be a favorite topic this summer.

The players definitely need to circle the wagons from Day One.

Yes, but the murder (as horrible as it obviously is) was at least tied to just one player--and that player has been gone from the team for a month now. He no longer plays here, and luckily it happened at a downtime too. There's only so many questions they can ask about Hernandez and they're all going to get the same answer anyway.

I understand what you're saying, they both were horrible; but I really don't know where the reporters would go with this story at this point unless something weird comes up and it somehow involved other Patriot players.

Spygate was a much larger distraction for the entire team in my opinion. That scenario involved every single player on the team of 2007 and many players who had played on the previous teams in the past. It was an enormous distraction. Hell, we still stumble across media articles about it 6 yrs later.

I didn't sense a 'hatchet job' that some others did.
While it is true one voice coming from the corporate media relations department is a rule applicable to and should be followed by all corporations (as the Patriots are), it just isn't the same as a flight attendant for Asiana Airlines being told not to say anything to the press about the accident at SFO. A flight attendant not talking to media is the absolute norm. But with a pro sports team, especially NFL, they are in the odd position of having young men with little to no media savvy, who are celebrities, and they are required to frequently speak with a wide range of media outlets -- and frequently in an off the cuff, right after the heat of battle way. To add to that volatility, prior to coming to the NFL, these were young men who were kings of their domains with throngs of people interested in what they had to say.

I think Klecko is overplaying the fear factor to some extent. He makes it sound almost as if guys are quaking in their cleats and in need of a valium just because the media asked them an uncomfortable question. I think he was over dramatizing it. Yet no doubt in my mind players have 'acute concern' about BB's reaction to not toeing the media line. And that 'acute concern' is much more robust with the Patriots than other teams. This is why a controlled media behavior has nearly perfect attendance among Patriot players. When questions like 'how is the injury coming along' or 'did you know team X called your mother a bad name? What is your response?' come along, everyone hear knows exactly what answer is coming from a Patriots player: "just trying to win the next game', 'we'll see how it goes', 'they're a real good team, we'll have to play our best to win'. You damn well know they want to speak their minds sometimes......especially when it comes to the trash talk and personal insults that the Jets (among others) are well known for. And it is BB's leading by example as well as his consistent, stone faced, no BS message he drills into their heads about it. It even worked on Ocho Cinco, one of the biggest talkers of recent memory. It's no accident it worked on him, no accident Klecko came away feeling concerned, no accident media line toeing participation by Patriot players is near perfect. That is the cold hard steel stamp of BB making that happen.

any chance you could web-cam it so I could watch. :D

FWIW, my point is quite simply that the article focuses heavily on the "stick," and almost completely ignores the "carrot": namely, BB does this because he feels it will help the players focus on their primary job (i.e., winning football games).

If BB felt that having players talk freely to the media actually made it more likely they'd win, I'm fairly sure that's what he'd do.

To use Twitter-speak:

They want to see BB put on a sackcloth and seek penance. #nothappening #dontholdyourbreath
