Dillon to retire?

If he's released after 6/1, we would save $600K on the cap this year but would lose $1.3M next year as he still has $5.7M of signing bonus unaccounted for onthe cap. I imagine he'd like to take the money and run but I'm guessing the Patriots aren't going to want to pay all 4 years of signing bonus for two years of work.
Also if he were released before 6/1, it would cost us $3.2M on the cap this year ($5.7M minus his $2.5M salary) and nothing in 2008.

what if they don't release him and he retires? could they negotiate a deal? is his incentive for asking to be released to keep the signing bonus?

I smell a rat... I think he was asked to take a pay cut, and he refused.. Why else would he say I am keeping that option of playing for another team.. Well for what its worth, I think Corey was great for 2004 for us, he began to decline in 2005 and in 2006 was ok , and was a good short yrd guy for us...

Are you going through the backdoor to "The Patriots are cheap" approach?

I think he was pretty clear. He is retiring, but reserves the right to change his mind if he regrets it later.

He was the best running back this team has seen in too many years.

Damn right. His form in 2004 was outstanding. No disrespect to Antowain Smith, but Brady basically carried the offense on his shoulders in the first two SB's. Dillon relieved that pressure.

Did he announce his retirement? I can tread the link without registering.

thanks for the tip!!

After reading the article again, Im not sure he is 100 percent done yet.. I think he plays 1 more yr.. I dont know alot of holes in his story.. Not Reiss ,but Corey.. I think Corey needs some lovin, and he wants the Pats say hey Cory, we want you back 1 more yr for a all or bust super bowl season..

If he retires, he owes three years (about $5.7M of signing bonus back). In which case we would save his entire salary each year. Yes, I am sure that he wants to be released in lieu of this.

I will never ever say the Pats are cheap, but something is not right.. I just think there is more than meets the eye..

and the pats just can't give him a portion of the signing bonus?

Dillon makes it clear that he doesn't want to end up like Earl Campbell who can barely walk these days. His buddy Tiki is going out at the right time and he wants to do the same. Dillon is gone.

Corey you definitely helped win that third Superbowl. I'll always remember that 2 nd half of the Colts game when McGinest was like "Clock killin Cory Dillon..... man I'll have to open another gatorade for this drive"
If one game defined the true value of Corey Dillon to the New England Patriots, it was the 2004 AFC Divisional Playoffs versus the Colts.

Dam I am getting tired of getting new jerseys every year. Hats off to Cory he did a hell of a job was hoping he would play one more year but with Maroney ready to take over we are in good shape. Thanks Cory !!

I do think he wants to be released and then sign on with another team, which the retirement thing is just a ploy of his to get his release.. Maybee Im wrong but PFT thinks the same thing.. If he retires, he did some great things for us, and I thank him, but if he ends up signing say San Diego or Seattle for a couple yrs as a short yrd specialist, then I will firmly believe there was more than meets the eye..

I felt he had a year left in him, but I have no worries making Maroney the man.
We do gain cap room. As for a replacement, I dont think we get much more than a jag, since Faulk is fine as a backup. I'd like to see a younger vet who could fill in as a starter if Maroney were out, keeping Faulk as the #2.
Something along the lines of a career backup who has started at times.

Andy - How do the Pats gain cap room? Dillon has 5.76 million in Signing bonus amortization remaining? His cap hit this year was supposed to be only 4.4 million. Did they change things regarding players retiring because the last I knew was that the entire remaining amount would still be brought forward. Hopefully Miguel can enlighten us on this.
