NFL considering banning academically ineligible players from attending the Combine

Re: NFL considering banning academically ineligible players from attending the Combin

The rule keeps nobody out of the NFL, which it shouldn't. It's nothing but P.R. to appease the witchburners.

Florio's actually got it right, for a change.

I didn't realize there was a witch hunt against players with bad academics in college. Here I was thinking the bad press the NFL has gotten was for a murderer who never (as far as it has been reported) had academic eligibility issues.

If this were "nothing but PR" wouldn't the "ban" be for guys who had off-field or other character incidents at school?

The fact that it's not targeted to that group should serve as an indication to you that it's just PR.

I agree it would keep nobody out, but it might give a leg-up in the draft to players who take academics seriously and are better all-around citizens.

How so? You think teams are going to say "Bobby from Yale stinks like week old fish, but he's a good boy, so I'm taking him in round 1."?

Teams will just go to the schools and work out the kids there. The rule, as reported, serves no purpose other than to allow the league to claim it did "something".

This rule, at least as it's being reported, does not prevent players from playing in the NFL, so the whole privilege versus right assertion is meaningless. All this rule would reportedly do is prevent draft eligible college players from going to the combine if they are academically ineligible. That just means that different people will get combine invites and the academically ineligible players will end up receiving more scouting groups and teams on campus.

My post was in response to the OP's philosophy not the rule.

The NFL only cares about talent and winning- They don't care about grades. Colleges "ram" them through academics. I've never heard of a player going from high school directly to the NFL. Doesn't happen. This is the NFL farm system. The combine just reinforces what the scouts already know- Probably not needed for the high picks, but crucial for the lesser known players.

Football players who have been out of high school for at least three years are eligible for the NFL draft. The rules do not state that a player must attend college, but virtually all of the players selected in the NFL draft played college football. A year as a redshirt player in college counts toward eligibility even though the player was not allowed to participate in games during that year. Therefore players who have completed their redshirt sophomore year can enter the NFL draft. A few players are also selected from other football leagues like the Arena Football League or the Canadian Football League.

I don't like it. What does being a good college student have to do with being a good football player?

Teams have full contingents at the combine -- multiple coaches, medical staff, support staff, etc., etc. The evaluative process is pretty exhaustive there, less so on trips to see individual players. Consequently, teams get a more reliable "read" on combine players, which potentially improves their chances of being drafted higher vs. players not subject to the same comprehensive review.

I can see the rule as a potential wake-up call for academic underachievers to get their act together if they want to maximize their pro potential, which includes a trip to the combine.
