Health being the big concern, but just a reminder:

Edelman is not Welker. He's not as durable or reliable, but Edelman also is far more explosive. He can play inside and out, and knows what Tom Brady looks for. In a two-game stretch last season, Edelman had a 56-yard receiving touchdown, a 68-yard punt return touchdown, a 47-yard run and a 49-yard punt return. (He also threw in a forced fumble on special teams and returned a fumbled kickoff for a score.)

No current NFL player has a higher career punt return average. (Really. Edelman is amazingly fourth in punt return average all time.) These are not the numbers of a simple chain-mover.

Making the Leap, No. 29: Patriots WR Julian Edelman - NFL.com

As long as he doesn't break his foot making the leap :p

Hopefully Edelman fills in seamlessly when Amendola goes down and Amendola fills in seamlessly for Edelman when he goes down.

considering Edelman's nightclub groping allegation last season, I feel "poised to make a leap" is a little bit of a double entendre, n'est ce pas? or perhaps it's because I have my mind perpetually in the gutter...:noidea:

He can and I think will make a leap, simply because he will get more opportunity this year. And I think he can consistently got open, what reason would one think not? He was already starting the year anyways, seeing the field more the Wes was the plan initially I think. And didn't he do really well his first year as a receiver back when Wes Welker got hurt in 2009, receiving the nickname Wes's "minime"? Now, he is far more experienced and perhaps better then back then. Remember, before his injury last year he was on the rise and a hot streak with at least 346 yards of total offense and 7 TDs including punt returns, a reverse and a long 56 yard bomb from Tom Brady. Put it this way, if both Amendola and Edelman stay healthy this year, then it will be a treat to see defenses try and stop them considering their different but complimenting skill sets.

i hope he doesn't take a leap again..he will get hurt :D

Injuries happen to everybody lol If roster spots went by percentage or chance of a player getting injured then no one would be successful, because their best player would never play due to "chance" of getting hurt, when that particular season just happened to be the one where they actually WEREN'T going to get hurt but instead sush the haters and actually stay healthy for an entire year. Remember when Tom got hurt for the first time, or Brett Favre? They can happen to any and everybody during any time but you simply can't go by that .. have to take your chances, and play your best players. Who knew Gronk was going to get hurt after the two seasons he's had?

Edelman is very good in open space. He isn't as good at creating his open space, but he isn't terrible either. The problem with Edelman is his injuries. He is always banged up, on the verge of missing games. He hasn't shown the ability to take consistent NFL hits and stay healthy enough to play.

Because he never has?
Last year he caught just 21 passes, and 9 of them were screens.

We keep hearing this, yet he never produces like the people saying it are predicting the he is a FA and no team shows interest and we sign him for a JAG deal. At what point does JAG production, and the appearance that the league considers him a JAG hit home?
He caught 4 and 7 passes the 2 previous years, and we had a need for WR production.

He had 280 yards of total offense (235 receiving and 45 rushing) all season. He scored 4 TDs.
On the rise? He caught 11 passes in his last 6 games after returning from injury.

If we are relying on scaring defenses about having to deal with Juilian Edelman as a WR we are in deep trouble.
Edelmans upside is making some nice runs on screens or short passes, running a reverse or 2 and being a good punt returner. If he is one of our top WRs that is not a good sign at all.

Ok dude, look

Everything that you just so-called broke down and quoted is flashes of brilliance given, his short time to show forth, being playing time on the field and time of injury that occurred. What I'm saying is realistically whats stopping him from being a weapon in this offense other than the obvious, durability and playing time? With his athleticism, elusiveness, short field explosiveness and possibility of growth what else is stopping him, other than those two obvious factors that I just mentioned? Giving the fact that he has Tom Brady as a QB, Josh McDaniels as an OC, Brian Daboll as a WR Coach and Bill Belichick to put him in position for success. Is he that much different physically from Wes Welker or Danny Amendola? He has the tools just like Wes once did, and Amendola does.. maybe not on the same level, but as far as style and approach not that different. And you can even go on to say more physically gifted than Wes, or open field runner. He is just as quick, and not like he hasn't learned from Wes Welker when Wes was in the offense, or can't learn from Danny Amendola.

I like Edelman. The Pats were a stacked team last year, with a lot of guys getting in on the action. Edelman came through big at times when the team needed him to.

There has never been any doubt about his open field running ability. The main doubts are his ability to consistently get open, catch the ball, and not get injured.
I strongly disagree. In my mind, there has never been any doubt about his ability to consistently get open and catch the ball. There have been very real concerns about his ability to stay healthy. That's reality. However, his injuries have largely been broken bones, not nebulous types of things like pulled muscles, strains, etc. I have always understood the frustration with Edelman's unavailabilty due to injury. What I have never understood is the inclination of many posters to denigrate his ability and/or desire. To me, those qualities have never been in question.

If he stays healthy yeah I could see him putting up Lloyd #'s. Probably not going to happen though

The worry for me with his injuries are they tend to be the same injury repeating like his broken hand (twice).

When he's healthy, he's a weapon, I like him as a player and his special teams ability is under rated despite, as the article says, he's the 4th best in league history at returning punts which is a bonus because after he puts in a good return, the GOAT walks onto the field with better field position thanks to Edelman...although he does need to fair catch a little bit more he takes a decent amount of heavy hits as soon as he catches the ball.

If Edelman had been getting open, he'd have put up better numbers. He was a top read for Brady at the start of last season.

False, with Aaron Hernandez, Wes Welker, Danny Woodhead, and Brandon Lloyd he wasn't the focal point of many offensive plays then. Now its his time to shine, being that him and Danny Amendola will be.

But he has a good work ethic and lots of talent. If he can stay healthy I could see him making more plays and putting up better numbers than he has in the past.

False. Edelman was out there on plays while Welker was on the bench in game 1, and he had 1 catch. Then, in game 2, Hernandez was injured and wasn't even in the picture. Edelman then got hurt in game 3, came back by game 7, and had 11 catches total for the remainder of the season.

All the pom poms in the world aren't going to make that 11 catches in 6 games number look good.

it looked like the Jets game was going to be his watershed coming out party but right after the scoop and score he broke something else.

I like that he's got a QB background...in an emergency that would come in handy...so there's a nice little plus. He's got good football smarts, decent hands, 4.5 speed....yeah, OK, he's an NFL football player...BUT...look, at some point a player HAS TO play...not a game here or there...not a good play every once in a while.
