Goodell at it again with a worthless effort to try and keep potential bad boys from entering the NFL.

NFL considers banning academically ineligible players from Scouting Combine | ProFootballTalk

What a player decides to do,either good or bad once he is a Pro is a thing no rule can stop.

There are plenty of players who were good soldiers in college and screwed up in the Pros and plenty of pros who were in trouble in college but were clean once they reached the pros ...... This potential banning will not make a difference IMO.

As much as I detest Goodell, I think this is one of his rare good ideas. It re-emphasizes the meaning of "collegiate" athlete. The ineligible guys can still do private workouts for the pros, who will have game film, etc.

I like this, too. Not so much for the NFL, but as a blow against the football factory schools. A lot more to do, but it would help.

Maybe that's because he's heard nothing over the past 2 weeks other than "The NFL should do something about not letting players like Hernandez into the league in the first place."

Re: NFL considering banning academically ineligible players from attending the Combin

Generally a good idea, but it will probably just make academics more of a joke, as coaches will just make extra sure that players are passing.

Re: NFL considering banning academically ineligible players from attending the Combin

It's a stupid idea.

It's a stupid idea.

Well, apparently that settles it! :singing:

Cecil Collins and Lawrence Phillips hate the idea....

It should, because the idea is absolutely moronic. Sadly, there will be enough of the witchburner crowd to give it a bit of traction.

Re: NFL considering banning academically ineligible players from attending the Combin

they should make a rule banning genetically ineligible humanoids from vying for the post of NFL commissioner....

Oh, you can do better than that. Be specific on what you feel it is "absolutely moronic."

Re: NFL considering banning academically ineligible players from attending the Combin

I really would like to know of the NFL players who got in trouble while in the league, the percentage of how many of them also had multiple problems in College and/or High School.

It would be interesting....

You mean he has been controlled by the media? That's not the Goodell I know. (Do I really need a sarcasm tag?)

Re: NFL considering banning academically ineligible players from attending the Combin

An IQ test and academics in general are not indicators of ones moral fiber IMO. Not sure there's a way to measure that other than looking at a persons past behavior and this doesn't do that.

The rule keeps nobody out of the NFL, which it shouldn't. It's nothing but P.R. to appease the witchburners.

Florio's actually got it right, for a change.

Re: NFL considering banning academically ineligible players from attending the Combin

once again people forget that playing in the NFL is a privilege not a right.

This rule, at least as it's being reported, does not prevent players from playing in the NFL, so the whole privilege versus right assertion is meaningless. All this rule would reportedly do is prevent draft eligible college players from going to the combine if they are academically ineligible. That just means that different people will get combine invites and the academically ineligible players will end up receiving more scouting groups and teams on campus.

so you're saying this rule is nothing but another "dog and pony show" exercise in futility promulgated by the Lord High Omissioner, he who desired to be head of the NFL from age 5?

I agree it would keep nobody out, but it might give a leg-up in the draft to players who take academics seriously and are better all-around citizens.

Re: NFL considering banning academically ineligible players from attending the Combin

Without knowing how many bad eggs in the NFL were academically ineligible at the time of the combines, it is hard to judge this rule. My guess is that guys like Hernandez, Pacman Jones, etc. were academically eligible at the time of the Combines. Most of these schools push through athletes with passing grades. You really have to be a huge moron to be academically ineligible at most of the schools. And being a bad person doesn't mean you are an idiot.

My guess is this new rule, if implemented, is just window dressing to make it look like the NFL is trying deal with all the arrests by players in the offseason. I doubt it will do much of anything other than punish the stupid players who can't figure out how to skate by in college. And I bet some of the worst character players will be unaffected by this rule.
