I really cannot BELIEVE how lucky the Colts got two times over. They pick first when Peyton Manning is coming out, and then they pick first when Andrew Luck is coming out.

Haha. True, but I think it's luckier when your 6th round draft pick becomes Tom Brady than when your 1st overall picks are Manning and Luck.

Finding that franchise QB is about the hardest thing a team has to do. A lot of teams look for one for decades, and two fall into Indy's laps back-to-back.

And then there's the more cynical take on the Colts securing the #1 overall draft pick in Andrew Luck.
:deadhorse:
I personally lean towards Irsay proactively folding by parading Kerry Collins, Curtis Painter & Dan Orlovsky onto the field and posting a pathetic 0-13 record before winning 2 of their last 3. By week 15, the Colts had secured (barely) the #1 pick. Nothing uncanny about it IMO, but, I'm taking the cynical view.

Yep. They totally tanked that season. The Broncos were trying to do that too, but then oops! Worked out for them in the end, as now they are pretty good with Manning, though.

All that matters now is this season. He's got the opportunity. What will happen, who knows. I'm jacked & pumped.

Next summer a Russian meteor could wipe out Patriot Place or Tom could go on a murderous rampage.

I sincerely believe Brady will be an all pro QB until he retires in 2017. He is in remarkable shape, works hard year rounds and is the most technically sound QB in the NFL. I also think Brady has always relied on his brain more than his arm.

That's like hitting the lottery for a football team, no doubt.

I never believed the Colts "tanked" on purpose. Their coaching was exposed big time without Manning running the offense.

That's the problem here: are you willing to suffer a 1-15 or 2-14 season to get a top-tier QB?

c'mon CT...the Rats only suffered through a 6 and 10 season and THEY got the greatest quarterback in NFL history in the 2nd round...

Interesting how this thread went, I was thinking of the Patriot team and its potential to win a championship, not necessarily the play of #12. I see Brady as being as good as any QB but not good enough to win in the playoffs by himself. A better question next time will be "Have the Patriots do enough to build a championship caliber roster for Brady ?"

They feel like the Atlanta Braves, good regular season team but not enough to win if all.

Both are true

I dont see any indication that the best overall QB in the NFL is slowing down. As long as NE keeps providing Brady with one of the best OL's, I dont see him loosing much of a step. They say that the arm is the last to go, so I can see Brady playing till hes 38-39,like Warner. Warner almost got better with age with a 93 and 96 passer rating in his last two seasons. Only Brady is a better QB than Warner, and has a better coach. So I would expect a better performance. Plenty of time for Tom to get his 4th ring.

I also see things as you do, Pherein...I'm not so uncertain about the Pats offense as I am with their defense. This D has to show improvement this season that is well beyond that performance they puked up last January versus the Ravens.

I just fear that the team, not Brady, has become the Atlanta Braves of the NFL like someone else said...a great team in the regular season and good enough to make the playoffs but not win in it. If the Pats are going to win another SB during the Brady/Belichick era, it will because the team around him comes together, doesn't drop balls at the worst moments or give up first downs with the game on the line.

The teams of the past few years have looked downright afraid come playoff time. I'll give them a pass for SB46 because they were playing a team that for whatever reason has their number...but cmon, losing in the first round to an inferior Jets team? That's straight up lack of mental toughness.

I guess like everyone else I was just spoiled with the 2001-2005 teams. Those teams had playmakers.

I've learned though to just sit back and enjoy the 16 game season because as a spectator you have no control over the impact of games, and even if they don't win another SB, they're going to win 11-12-13 games or more every year as long as Brady is under center, and I know fans of teams like the Jaguars where going 9-7 and getting a wildcard birth would be like winning the SB to them.

I'd be happy for competitive football until Brady retires and one more ring, but I fear it won't happen, especially when it's a one game elimination in the playoffs. All it takes is a hot and hungry team to outplay the Pats for one day as we've seen over the past several years.

I don't know man... I mean the Pats are always a contender. Just making it to the Superbowl is huge. Pats are good.

I'm taking a different approach to watching the team this year...just enjoying the regular season and if anything happens in the postseason it's a bonus. Like I said, I have friends who are fans of sub-.500 teams, and they'd do anything just for a wild card berth and a single playoff game. We at least know that with a healthy Brady they're going to win 11-12-13 plus games a year in the regular season and take the division, and that at least puts them in the position to possibly win it all.

I also see things as you do, Pherein...I'm not so uncertain about the Pats offense as I am with their defense. This D has to show improvement this season that is well beyond that performance they puked up last January versus the Ravens.

I see the same thing as you. Patriots and Saints have had the the top 1-3 offences sence 2006. That is an incredible thing to sustain, and I know I will never see this again in NO.
Ive seen NO and NE consistanly put up 20-28 pts in a quarter, when they start clicking, and that is incrediable. Even by todays standards.
Heck, we are still smiling here when 14 pts behind in the 1st ½. No worries at all.
I know DC's scratch thier heads and think "damn how do I stop Brady" or " how can I cover all these saints players". Brady is a real blessing, and has a lot of good years in him.
Our defenses have been pretty bad or lacking, and we only did well in 2009 with turnovers. NE has been up and down as well. If our teams could just get a rock solid 10th ranked defence to support the offensive firepower , the NFL would have been a different story, and I think NE would have dominated the AFC since 2006. Meaning 2 or more SB trips. Id like to see the defense of old with the Patriots, and love to see us finally get something solid. Rob Ryan is a pretty good DC, but we showed last year that we dont have the personel to run a 3-4. Ravens were not better than the Patriots. The defense lost that game we thought.

Uh Oh. It's getting deep. I'll be right back, time to grab the waders. I hear the trolls are biting tonight. :p

Brady's window of opportunity exists as long as he is playing in the NFL

Seriously folks - even our Super Bowl winning teams had serious flaws. Brady has a way of covering up those flaws and even making guys like Reche Caldwell look halfway decent (and coming close to the Super Bowl that year at that)

That's not to gloss over any shortcomings of this or any previous Patriots team - but if you have Tom Brady playing QB, the window is wide open.

Actually, Brady has been WAY better of a quarterback since the Patriots have won those Super Bowls. I don't think many people would deny that.

I'd say that Brady is much better today than he was back then. That's kind of the irony. I'd also say that that the guy has peaked, mainly because there isn't very much higher than he could go. We'll see how long he can maintain that level of excellence...things like this is what makes football fun to follow.
