good news. thanks.

Thanks for the news and now a few front offfices have more to talk about at the combine.

We'll probably get outbid, but it's fun to have something to hope for.

For a player of his versatility at a position of obvious need, I expect the Pats to be at least competitive for him.

While this figures to be year two of a post-CBA sellers' market, and there will likely be better value for big name FAs in the 2008 and 2009 offseasons, I think you have to make a run at Thomas now, because if we wait until then, we'll likely need a total overall at LB that could really set the franchise back.

To me, it's up to Thomas if he wants to sign with the pats.
They will make him a fair offer. Other teams will offer more. If he wants another chance at a SB, he could come here. If he wants to cash in, he goes elsewhere.

Honestly,if that is all he wanted he could just stay in Baltimore.

AD has been playing for peanuts his whole NFL career and he is looking to set his family up for life and I dont blame him. There are also reports that he wants to play in warm weather,he is a Mississippi boy after all.

If he were a few years younger I could see us making a serious run at him. Now? Not so much.

Helps us if he leaves Baltimore. Hope he ends up in Frisco. Would be hard to justify paying more than anybody on our defense except Seymour. I'd like to draft some defense and improve that way.The one fa I am very interested in is Donnie Edwards.

Edwards seems to bring the same issues with $$$ to the table. Your post confuses me.

I'd make a strong run at him because I think we need a 3 down 'backer with his versatility. Role players don't work when your opponent has the ability to play a hurry-up game, like the Colts did last year. Thomas can play outside or inside, cover or rush. Their are very few weaknesses to his game. Signing him would free up the draft for high CB, WR, or S picks, and take the pressure off signing Asante for a big roster bonus cap hit, allowing a rook to develop while he plays out his franchise year.

We certainly have the cap room to sign him and my understanding is we also have the long term cap shape to do so.
Just because other teams have more $$ doesn't mean they will offer more....they also have more needs.
On top of this, cap management is not a one year project. Using the 9ers for example, if they spend most of their cap money on high priced FAs, they will also be longterm deals. Those long term deals increase over time in many cases substantially. If you could see the best offer on the table to every available FA, and the 9ers upped it 10% (or whatever it would take) they could sign a bonanza of top FAs. But they would immediately put themselves in future cap hell. Most FA cap numbers double within about 3-4 years. (Thats an estimate, i didn;'t look it up) The 9ers have the ability to spend all that cap room on top tier guys, but by doing so they will cripple their cap down the road, there is no way around it. I think they will be more prudent than that.

As far as the Pats, the only thing we know is that BB will use the cap room in the way he believes puts the best team on the field, now and in the long run.
In the past, that has meant midlevel free agents, because we have never had this kind of cap room.

I think everyone with the 'we dont sign big money guys' needs to look back at what are cap room was in each of BBs years. We have always spent to the cap, in some years needing to cut guys to do so.
In 2003, we had some room, getting us Colvin and Harrison, but almost every year since BB has been here we have been very tight to the cap. (Last year we had more room, but it was hard to spent it and still account for the possibility of extending Branch, and Koppen, and keeping cash available to sing Ty Law--if in fact we were entertaining that)

What BB did when he had 6-8mill of cap room for FA just isnt avalid inidcator of what he would do when he has 20mil.

But do you really want to sign a 30-year-old LB to a huge contract?

Seems like more risk than its worth.

The guy is a star, and we need serious help at LB. If I were BB, I'd be prepared to offer north of $40M for five years. I don't think that will be the best deal that AD sees, but that and the allure of winning a bunch of rings in New England may just be enough.

Like I said, if he were younger I'd entertain a deal like that. The only way I'd be satisfied signing him now is if the deal were frontloaded, big time.

The difference with AD is that he has only been a full time starter for 3 years, before that all he did was play gunner for special teams. He doesnt have the normal wear and tear that your typical 29 yr old LB would have.

Very true, so a 4-5 year deal brings him to retirement with the possible release in 3 years if he does decline. No biggy to me. IMO he is in his prime for 2-3 more years. I wouldnt mind paying for it.

Then draft a guy to learn under him at 24 or 28.

Good point. Well, I guess we'll have to trust in BB to make the right decision, as usual.

Couldn't agree more. I think Adalius is worth the risk of his slowing down 3 years from now. And he provides a good combo of veteran and younger-than-Bruschi. Add him, plus a couple of draft picks, and LB looks a lot better.
