Before, they franchised a mediocre LT in Backus for like 7.5 million. Now everyone hates him and wants him moved to guard and Joe Thomas could be their target this draft.

And now...

NFL.com's Adam Schefter reports Detroit slapped its franchise tag on DT Cory Redding.

Cory Redding?! You've got to be joking.

I actually don't think it is that surprising. Once they moved him to DT he played really well. With the extra money teams have this year and the relatively thin free agent market why not lock up your top free agent for another year if you can work out a deal with them?

The Lions need 10 franchise tags because I can't imagine anyone ever resigning there otherwise.

Can you name a better Lions' player?

Thought not.

Redding would have been one of the top free agents on the market. I think the franchise number isn't too high for him. I think if it wasn't for the new CBA with teams being flushed with cap space and the new free agent contracts potentially eclipsing the cost of the franchise tender, I think there would be several free agents who have been tagged who wouldn't have including Asante Samuel. If you told me two or three months ago that we would franchise Samuel, I would have thought you were crazy. Redding has had a similiar one year turnaround like Samuel.

Redding was being talked about in a lot of top free agents articles being written. He may not be worth the franchise number to some teams but he was to the Lions.

What other free agent should they have used it on?

Was Tebucky Jones one of the top 5 safties in football when we tagged him? Not even remotely close but he was a great special teamer and we didn't want to lose him without getting anything.

roy williams . kevin jones. shaun rogers . ernie sims
I was being glib. Yes, Roy Williams is better than Cory Redding. As for the rest? Maybe, no, eventually.
