Yes, one of the most overrated players in the NFL decided to kick the Pats fans while they are down via Twitter:

I understand that every Fan base has bad fans what I'm saying is NE fans have more than others and think they are better than everyone else

Although he respects Kraft and Belichick:

As much as I dislike MOST of the fan base I can honestly say that I respect the coaches and ownership

Ok I'm done starting stuff before I get a phone call from our organization haha...no apologies I meant what I said ✌

https://twitter.com/TorreySmithWR/status/348629151332331520

I'm out y'all..keep it classy..I'm sure MOST folks who are mad don't know how to

https://twitter.com/TorreySmithWR/status/348648277702504448

Got called the N word so many times last night like there are no black folks that represent NE...typical

https://twitter.com/TorreySmithWR/status/348784783184240641

I don't condone anyone calling him the N word.

I'm done responding to fans who confirmed what I originally said...having 1 fan base out of 32 hate you isn't bad...don't need y'all see ya

Good luck continuing your mediocre career Torrey. I am sure you will continue your trend of having one elite game followed by 3-4 games where you have a couple catches and are a complete non-factor. Way to step up in the playoffs last year, other than two catches in Denver you were a non-factor.

Confused by Smith's N word tweet
"Got called the N word so many times last night like there are no black folks that represent NE...typical"

because every time I was playing hoops, many of the black folk were calling each other by the term.

This should unite the board after last week's news. At least this fan base doesn't celebrate and fawn over someone complicit in a double murder

This sounds like an insult but I'm serious. Can somebody remind me who Torey Smith is/was, please?

I've been to NFL games in only two cities: Foxboro and Baltimore.

I've seen how fans of opposing teams get treated at Gillette and it's pretty disgusting. Because of what I saw at home games, I went to M&T Stadium ready for some nasty stuff. I was blown away by how nice everyone was in my section and while tailgating. It really opened my eyes to how terrible our fan base can be. So I don't blame him.

You have never been to the Meadowlands, Philly, Orchard Park, Oakland, and other stadiums. They are worse than most. I have to say the crowds in Baltimore are pretty tame compared to others. Fans from other teams have been stabbed in some of the stadiums I mentioned.

I have seen people at Gillette be really nice to fans of other teams and be complete a-holes to them. It all depends on what game (fans tend to be more obnoxious in later games than 1 PM because the liquor kicks in), who the opponent is, and what section you are in.

I wish we had "overrated" Torrey Smith on our team.

Shoot the messenger, ignore the message. Standard operating procedure here in the world of Pats good World bad.

Back in Perfect Season 07, the Mrs. & I had tickets to the game at Baltimore. Mrs. P, who gets freaked out by crowds anyway, got so freaked out by how drunk and nasty people were we had to leave.

That said, when we went to Foxboro the next season, nobody was horrible -- it was the Dolphins game, so everybody was acting like someone urinated in their wheaties, leaving the game early, etc. More spoiled brats than vile abscesses on the buttocks of humanity.

But we were treated to someone screaming about how Kraft just wanted us all spending $$$ at the then-new Patriots Place, and his ahem, religio-ethnic identity figured prominently in the rant. Since it's the same as mine, I was a bit put out by that experience too.

Bottom line... Screw it, fan bases include vocal a-holes. People who should be least vocal in this world are typically the most vocal.

To the "Torrey Who" crowd, he's a third-year guy. Here are his stats.

Were we to pick him up, we'd be yammering about what a great addition he is as a deep threat... but we didn't, we're all pissy about what he's tweating... so it's Torrey Who?

Maybe I should just ignore the trolls. And I will start with you.

I sure don't. Straightline receiver with a ton of physical skills and mediocre production and questionable football smarts who can be easily neutralized by physical CBs. Now that Boldin is gone to take away some of the coverage, Ravens fans may be wishing Smith was a Patriot too.

I wouldn't mind the Pats upgrading the receiving corp, but Smith is guy I never got the love. He has one great game followed by a handful of games where you forget he even played he was so invisible. Last year he had 8 games where he had 2 catches or less (four with one catch or less) as the Ravens' #1 WR in most of the games.

I assume that nobody here thinks that the Patriots fans were all angels. Most of us have been to enough home games to know better.

That said, this is one instance where Smith probably should have kept his mouth shut, because his timing sucked. Every fan base has its dregs, and the Patriots fans aren't nearly as bad as those of the Raiders, Eagles or Jets, just to name a few.

Mediocre production? A late 2nd round pick that's 24 years old who's racked up 99 receptions 1696 yards and 15 TDs in his first two years? Disagree there.

I'm not disagreeing with you that he disappears, but he was 23 and only in his 2nd year. Let's see if he continues to progress or stalls in his 3rd year as de-facto #1.

I'd rather have Torrey Smith or Greg Little than Shane Vereen right now, we'll see if that changes this year.

There's a big difference between verbal jousting and being outright threatening. It's very nice you had a pleasant experience in Baltimore, but Gillette is among the best-behaved fan bases in the ENTIRE NFL. Want to know why? Because the Krafts enforce a zero-tolerance policy of season-ticket revocation for bad behavior. Fights in the stands almost never happen these days where in old Foxboro Stadium they were commonplace. But I have never, ever, heard ANYONE use the "n" word at Gillette in any context. That kind of nonsense not only would be policed by fans but also is cause for ejection, as is all verbal harassment that goes over the line.

I've been a Patriots season ticket holder since 1994. I've also been to 20 other NFL stadiums and can tell you that Gillette's fan security, and fan environment, is second to none. Gillette has three layers of security -- regular stadium staff, crisis staff and a large police presence. I have seen nothing similar elsewhere. In fact, I was physically threatened and had to watch my back just for wearing Pats colors in San Diego and the Meadowlands (Jets, not Giants). No help in sight if I really needed it.

Pats fans are a typically tolerant and civilized lot. There always are a few drunken jerks just like visiting fans can be obnoxious a-holes. Whatever Smith is beatching about is an isolated thing he's chosen to run with for reasons known only to him.

That's mediocre production for a #1 WR. Although he wasn't the #1 WR his rookie year. He is an average at best primary receiver.

Yes, he is better than Vereen at this point, but Vereen is a change of pace back. Not setting the bar that high.

You seem like a voice of reason. Sorry you had to leave the end of that 07 game as it was indeed a classic.

As for your experience at Gillette, unfortunately when you get 70k people together you can expect a small percentage to be either out of control drunk, ignorant or a combination of both. Obviously that mind set is not the majority.

oh brother

For those that may have forgotten, I am guessing that Smith may still be upset about what happened after his brother died last September. Smith played against the Pats just 15 hours after finding out about the death and caught two touchdowns in that game, with Baltimore winning 31-30.

After the AFCCG Smith said that he had "played a lot of games since my brothers death and I never received as many rude tweets after a win than Sunday...yet NE fans cry about class."

Apparently his bitterness is still festering, based on the fact that he felt compelled to bring the topic up once again. Perhaps some of it comes from his teammates (e.g., Terrell Suggs' fixation with the Patriots), but I am guessing that much of it is tied to the memories he has with his brother: when he thinks of his brother, he also remembers the hateful remarks directed at him. If that is the case then he would be served well to get some counseling to deal with the grief as well as how to deal with what the fans said.

The comments made towards Smith are shameful and unforgivable.

However, what is the point of Smith coming public with this information, and what is the point of doing it now? What possible good would it do to provoke an entire region and fan base? Obviously he didn't bother to think what the response would be.

Again, I am not in any way defending the actions of the idiots that resorted to saying whatever they said to Smith, either the first time or last night. I do however find it somewhat ironic and disingenuous that he negatively stereotypes everyone that is part of one particular group by implying that all that are part of that group are prejudiced bigots; his reaction was equally biased.

Not that it makes it alright, but I am sure many if not all well known professional athletes have to endure plenty of vile hatred on a regular basis. For whatever reason one particular athlete decided to make that information public.

If Torrey Smith actually "thought" it would be the first time.

Ahhhh I love being the Yankees of the NFL. Embrace the hatred. If we were not the most successful football team in the history of the NFL and perhaps all of sports we would not get any attention.
