Last seen on IR. Will he be back and if so,will he fill in some of the gap? Let's be honest-who here forgot we even had him?

Me too. I got halfway through writing about James Sanders in the most improved post before realising that it wasn't just Rodney and Geno missing from the DBs. We lost Tebucky Jones and Mel Mitchell too.

Well unless the Pats cut him, he will be here this year. He signed a two year deal. Mel Mitchell will be here also unless he is cut. He too signed a two year deal.

Yep,and I remember reading that Tebucky's loss had huge impact, especially coming so early on. I had forgotten about Mel too:bricks: Thinking about that situation makes me wonder about their progress-I've seen absolutely zilch about either one of them.

Before Tebucky got injured, BB was experimenting with using Jones as a situational pass rushing OLB. I guess the idea was that the offense wouldn't knwo if he were a nickel/dime back, or a pass rusher. The element of surprise. I thought it was an interesting idea.

I think he has vaule in certain situations such as using him at LB in the Don Davis role vs certain teams like the Colts. He's still a very good special teams player as well and he adds good depth. He's not a solution as a starter however at SS or FS at this point in his career.

You guys are missing the obvious here, both he and Mitchell have been solid special teams players and have experience playing saftey Tebucky much more than mithcell, but for these reasons you dont cut them. I am not saying they should make the squad but why would you cut them now they are very worthy of being in training camp.

Good morning cousins,
French Toast this morning with a little OJ and coffee that I am still working on.

Like the idea of Tbuck at a rusher/safety/LB. Great concept, but Pilly does that as well with Michael Lewis who is now a FA and was a rave a two seasons ago in 2005 with 107 tackles. He is in the dog house at Philly because he refused to re-up for their dollar. Tebuck is aging but I would had rather seen him at SS covering a wide open receiver in the Colts game with one minute left to go, than Alexander. He still has some quicks. Mel Mitchell is stictly a ST guy.

How about Lewis ? He's a FA, and should be fairly inexpensive because he is under the radar. He had a couple sacks and a couple pics this year even though they benched him with the crap he could not cover, which was BS it was punishment. Cousins, he is 6' 1" and 222. That's bigger than FA MLB Cato June and almost as big as Brsuchi and certainly bigger than Izzo. He can run. He's been a starter on a team with a top defense and he will flat knock you out! Why can't he do a little LB as a side gig! The Godfather loves a guy that does many things.

Does anyone remember Urlacher was a safety in college? Why noy Lewis? Or (P.S. There is a hard hitting safety at Virginia Tech named Rouse who is 6"4" and 230 lbs.) A MLB (Rouse) with quicks and hits and, by the way, can cover. Why not investigate that?

Back to the topic. Let's see....Lewis with Rodney? Duck your head Marvin!

Let's vote:
Lewis over Hawkins?....Lets see those hands Cousins! (Decent Job AH but it's time)

Lewis over Wilson?......Didn't he lead the NFL Mash team the last three years in a row? Isn't he like 5' 6" and 120lbs and makes Bob Sanders look like Saskwatch?

Lewis over our Sanders?....Who the hell knows and he's tiny like 5"10" and 195lbs...."I'll have to look at the film!"

Lewis over Tbuck?.......Age before beauty

Lewis over Mel?....Please!

Thoughts?

Interesting. Where did you hear that?

Tebucky has a role here as long as he's willing to play gunner on ST, although without him in the mix we did fine on kickoff coverage, better than years past actually.

I thought Michael Lewis was benched in the middle of the season for horrible play - he was getting burned left and right. He's decent in run support from my understanding, but bad in coverage.

i didnt. i was looking forward to having him on ST and sub packages. rumor had it he would play OLB in our nickel/dime which would have been good..get Bruschi/Seau or TBC out of there

I remember hearing that pre-season. I think it was Gresh on FSNE who I saw talk about it. It actually sounded like a pretty interesting idea.

definatley..Jones is what..6"2 225 at the very least and he looks big too. (top of my head)

hes faster than the Lbs and knows how to cover better than most of them

According to Lewis and his agent, it was to punish him for not wanting to stay in Philly on their terms. They say him benching was BS. The guy still picked two even though he didn't play all that much in the last half. This guy doesn't have to cover like a DB if we use him more as a corner OLB or pass rusher. He
also had a couple sacks. What NE DB had two sacks in 2006? The Eagles other safety Dawkins can't cover anyone either but with two hitters back there, somone was going to get burned in the passing game.

He's got to be an upgrade for anyone of our safeties other than Rodney. We all agree with that. He's only 26 years old. If we start benching our DB's for not covering, we'll have to get Mike Haynes to come back. Maybe our system fits him better.

The kid had 107 tackles in 2005. In our defense the safeties come up more to support the run more than most teams. Hawkins did a good job but was smallish to do such and took a beating. Lewis is not going to be that moveable. How many times do we get beat when Gates, McMichael, even Ben Utech for crying-out-loud, or even some tall WR's beat our DB's on size? There were a couple TE's I have never even heard of that caught over 100 on us this year.

This kid is 6'1" and 222 lbs. It's how he can learn to transition in coverage as to how he will work out.

Dawkins can cover actually and Lewis just had a really bad year..couldnt cover anything and got benched. id take a shot @ him but not the money he was worth 2 years ago

You nailed it-that's exactly what I recall reading, and that his injury forced some serious rearranging, including Bru. (Harkening back to the thread about Bruschi's position and need for help).
I remember reading Mitchell's injury also being a huge disappointment; another wrench in BB's plans.
I was surprised (shocked) when we picked up TBuck, but the more I thought about it the more I liked the idea.
NO mention whatsoever of these 2 guys' injury progress.
*Attention Media: Here's a productive offseason story.

Gimme a break. A team doesn't put it's best players on the field to punish them for not wanting to stay?

How does that punish the player? Teams looking to pick him up look at his game film.

My thought is that Michael Lewis got benched for Sean Considine, is absolute garbage, and has no place on a team that needs to get faster, not slower.
