There have been rumors Denver might send Jake Plummer, Tatum Bell and their first-round pick to Houston for the Texans No. 8 pick in the draft, in the hopes of drafting Adrian Peterson.
-- Rocky Mountain News

If this is true who do you think this deal favors?

Business or not, Ron Rivera's parting with the Bears was not his choice. The reality is that Rivera and the Bears would have parted company even if they had won the Super Bowl, sources have confirmed. The Rivera move wasn't about money. It was about power. No matter how the message is spun, sliced or diced, it came down to this: Lovie Smith fired Rivera.
-- Chicago Tribune

How about Denver gives us Plummer, Bell, and their first-rounder. We ship Pass/Cassel and our Seattle pick to Houston, and Houston hands over their number 8 to Denver.

In seriousness I think Houston gets the better deal in that instance. Turn Plummer into a pick with another team, do what you can with Bell, and save some money by picking lower in the first round.

I think this deal defintiely benefits the Broncos. They are planning on getting rid of Plummer anyways, they will get a pick or something in return instead of releasing him. Tatum Bell is always injured and is more of a speed guy.

You know Shanahan wants Adrian Peterson as their workhorse back.

If I were the Texans I would stay in the top 15 at the very least. They need elite playmakers. There big mistake was bringing back David Carr.

Honestly, I don't think that CARR is the problem. I think that a big problem is that they have YET to put a starting quality LT on the team. They attempted to but it has never panned out. They certainly haven't attempted to develop one until this past year when they grabbed Charles Spencer and Eric Winston.
The rest of the line is still an issue.

Its kind of hard to be a good QB when your O-line isn't protecting you.

its a stupid rumor. Shannahan isnt that stupid to risk hoping Peterson falls to 8

:ditto:

Who needs to win now? RAC in Cleveland. It's very possible that the Browns take Peterson at #3 or #4 depending on the coin flip at the combine. And if the Browns pass on Peterson, Minnesota would consider picking him at #7. Marshawn Lynch isn't going in the Top 10 so this rumor makes no sense.

any team might take Peterson realisticly..you dont always draft the need..maybe the player is something u cant pass on. Saints took Bush but they didnt really need him but it worked out.

i can see Raiders or Lions also taking Peterson. Raider fans insist Jordan isnt good enough but their OL blows . Lions might not have Jones for half the year and either team could be looking for an improvment and a pro bowl potential type of guy like AD

This would be a good deal for Denver -- unless someone takes Peterson before No. 8 which could easily happen. I've seen projections of him going as high as No. 3 overall. I don't think he goes that high, but it would be hilarious if Denver made that deal with him in mind and someone swoops in and gets him before they could.

I just heard this while out at dinner last night from the head chef. Friggin rat fink Shanahan up to his tricks again. I wouldn't put it past his old buddy Kubiak to help him out.

David Carr isn't the Texans problem imo.

If they really upgrade their OL, he will be better...

I'm down the middle on this one. I used to think that Carr would be much better if the OL was a solid one. He's had some very good games when he had time.

However, football isn't perfect. I don't think you can give your franchise to a guy that is great ONLY when you give him seven seconds in the pocket. How many games over the years have we seen Tom Brady get hit 20 times and still put on a show?

I really don't know about Carr. I'm in the Houston TV market so I 'm forced to watch them a lot. He's had some moments that make you say, "You see, if you give him time, he's great." He's also had those moments that make you think he's just never going to become an elite QB.

I really don't know.

This is a ridiculous deal whether Peterson is there or not. Tatum Bell and JAKE are worth that much of a move-up??? I think not.

Word on the street is, no way Houston makes that deal.

The Texans really want Peterson but know he won't fall.

Plummer will be waived -- not traded.

Plummer would love to re-unite with Kubiak.

The Texans will not draft their OT at #8 -- but later on.

Carr is on the trading block.

Houston would trade up (slightly) -- or down for extra picks (not players).

But they didn't get Maroney. :rocker:

I don't know what their problem is with Tatum Bell, that guy is a stud. I think he has averaged over 5.0 yards per carry for his career so far. bell has proven himself so far, i don't get it. Makes me scared because you think Shanahan would be an expert on RB's, and he annointed Maroney as a star, yet he seems so wrong about Bell. But Shanahan certainly knows more than me.

This rumor doesn't really make sense beause Shanahan has been of the schoo of thought that he can take pretty much anyone and turn him into a 1300+ yard runner iin that system. And he's right. He wouldn't have traded away Portis if he didn't think his running game is based more on the system than the guy itslef. This is why it wouldn't make sense for him to try to move so far up to get Peterson. His past behavior has indicated that he doesn't believe he needs a stud running back, and the results have supported that.

Scouts Inc on Espn did a good write up on the Broncos needs, running back is listed 5th. I think they have way too many other needs to do this trade and to be honest if Houston is trading down I think they need more so I don't think it works for either team.

Defensive end: Denver has not solved its defensive end problems since losing Bertrand Berry and Reggie Hayward in free agency over the past three seasons. The Broncos do not have that guy on the outside who can get consistent pressure on the quarterback. They have used a group of players, including Ebenezer Ekuban (7 sacks), Kenard Lang, Courtney Brown (IR) and John Engelberger (1 sack). Other than a healthy Brown, who is much better versus the run, this team does not have a player who strikes fear into any offensive tackle with his speed or edge quickness. Denver needs to find a legitimate pass-rush threat who can take pressure off the rest of the defense.

LynchSafety: John Lynch is going to be 36 next season. Although he is still a very good run support player, he is very limited in coverage at this point of his career. Fellow starting safety Nick Ferguson finished the 2006 season on injured reserve with a knee injury and provides very little big-play ability when healthy. No. 3 safety Sam Brandon finished the season on injured reserve with a knee injury. The Broncos don't have a lot of young talent here either, so this position could really use a complete makeover this offseason.

Wide receiver: The Broncos have a No. 1 receiver in Javon Walker. Towards the end of 2006 Walker was seeing more and more double coverage because the Broncos lack a threat opposite of him. Veteran Rod Smith has had an illustrious career, but the time has come for him to retire. He has been a great player and leader on that team, but he just can't get open or separate anymore. No. 3 receiver Brandon Marshall and No. 4 receiver David Kircus make plays, but the Broncos can't go into next year assuming either will step up and be more than a backup. Walker needs some help and Denver needs a young receiver to start grooming to eventually become a No. 1 target.

Defensive tackle: If you look at the entire Denver defensive line, you would say this is a unit with very good depth across the board. The problem is the lack of a dominant force or consistent playmakers. Like the defensive end position, the Broncos don't have a guy inside at tackle who can take a game over. Michael Myers is an unrestricted free agent who might not be back in 2007. He started the 2006 season well but wore down late. Gerard Warren is never going to be better than average. He had a toe injury that really hindered his play, but even when healthy he takes way too many plays off. Elvis Dumervil played inside last season as a nickel rusher, but he lacks the size to be an every-down player at end or tackle. Denver needs a disruptive force inside -- a guy who can penetrate and make plays on the other side of the line of scrimmage.

Running back: The Broncos have two running backs, but they do not have a feature back. They tried to use a rotation of Tatum Bell and Mike Bell last season, but neither could really get in a groove. The team does not like the lack of toughness Tatum Bell, who missed time again last season, has shown. Tatum Bell also was in the doghouse late in the year for putting the ball on the ground. Mike Bell was an undrafted free agent last season and did some good things, but he does not give them a lot of big-play ability. Together, Tatum and Mike Bell are a nice combination, but Denver needs one guy who can be counted on from week to week.
