Aaron Dobson Makes Good Impression on Day 2 of OTA's

SO what would be considered a good year for Dobson. I'm thinking if he can catch the ball 50 times for around 700 yards and 6 TDs we have got ourselves a good player.

throw in 30 for 400 and 4 td's from Boyce and I'd be very happy.

As you're watching this, just be aware that West Virginia had one of the worst defenses in college football last year. They gave up 38 points per game.

Actually, they were one of the worst defenses I've ever seen. And that's putting it kindly.

My two greatest hopes for this crop of WR's is that Dobson "gets it" early on and that Amendola remains healthy. We'll need Amendola to try to replace some of Welker's production over the last few seasons. But Dobson, IMO, is exactly the type of WR this offense needs. Big, physical, athletic, and can beat the press. He's a red zone target for jump balls and is capable of threatening every level of the field. His "getting it" would make life that much easier for the TE's and Amendola.

The main problem with Lloyd was that he would go to the ground after making the catch to avoid being hit. It is quite difficult to get extra yardage if you are laying on the ground.

Exactly. The dude fell to the ground for no reason ALL the time. Sooo frustrating! He easily could have had over 1,000 yards receiving if he had been willing to put his body out there, but nope you knew what you were getting. As soon as he caught the ball, Lloyd would assume the fetal position!

Dobson is exciting in that he is a new mold of player/wr for the Pats. He is BIG, TALL, physical. He's one of the 'go up and get it' type of wideouts. And I think Tom hasn't had one of those since Randy Moss. And even Randy was more of a finesse/supreme athlete than a battler for the football.

What we need from Dobson is big time catches and a redzone threat. If he can do that, I think even 60 odd catches would be considered a successful rookie campaign.

Did anyone else shudder when they read this in the article?

At cornerback, Kyle Arrington and Aqib Talib were getting the most action at the position outside

No. Just. No

The most disappointing thing for me at the early OTAs was Brian Daboll working with the offensive linemen instead of the wide receivers. Daboll
had a proven record of success developing wide receivers (Branch, Givens).

Some comments on the comments

1. Now that he is wearing another uniform, Welker's "bad hands" will start to get more play over the next few months. But I am among those who thinks Welker issues were more about his "catch radius" than his hands. Anything from his chest down to his toes, Welker was tremendously reliable. Anything above that, and his tiny arms and hands became a liability and the results suffered. I'm not saying he couldn't catch anything over his head, but those catches became less reliable. Its really not his fault. Its just a simple physical limitation.

2. I DO NOT want Danny Amendola to replace all of Welker's production. If he does, then that would mean that we are throwing the ball too much to DA, and that would defeat the objective of spreading the ball around more in the "new" offense. If DA has 80% of Welker's production, and the Pats are once again among the league leaders in scoring.....we win. It won't mean the DA is less of a player, but that the offense has evolved into something different.

3. Amendola has a larger catch radius and more position flexibility than Welker, and even if he his production is less, he could still be an upgrade. There is only ONE issue with DA, and that's whether he can stay on the field. No one knows how that will turn out.

4. Nice to hear nice things about Dobson, but its T-shirts and shorts season, so it should be expected. It was NICER to hear that Ballard was out there running with the ones.

5. My hope for Dobson will be limited to this. It is my hope that if he and Brady can get together on just one pattern, it will the 20yd back shoulder thrown against man coverage. If they can get THAT one down, then everything else will be gravy.

6. One thing we shouldn't forget is that even if Welker had returned, the WR position was going to go under a major overhaul. As someone put so accurately, Welker was NEVER a long term solution. Hopefully Boyce DA, and Dobson are. But if they are not, BB will keep investing in the position until he has what he needs, just like he's done with TE's, the OL, and DB's. If they work out he'll move on to other areas, if not he'll keep picking up WR's until he's happy.

Last year Dobson had 57 catches for 679 yards with 3 TDs, good for 3rd on the team at Marshall University.

So are you saying they should go sign Antavious Wilson?

I think your numbers are very close to what I'd consider a good year from the rookies.

One thing to remember is that it's not just all about numbers (not that you are suggesting that it is), it's more about the ability to offer more versatility for our offense.

In other words, even Brandon Tate's "terrible" rookie (redshirted) year he only caught about 25-30 balls, but he had an 18 ypc average which stretched the field for downfield catches at times when it mattered. He also contributed 3-4 TD's, and approx. 500 yds via receptions too. Most importantly, he drew attention away from some defenders/safeties, which also allowed other underneath routes to become more open.

I don't know exactly why Tate was cut, if he wasn't picking up the offense etc, but I honestly wouldn't be tremendously unhappy with numbers in the same vein of production from at least one of the two rookie WR's.

I think they should actually sign at least 2 more Wilsons, just to screw with everyone.

I saw Paul Warfield play his entire career...the ball hits both his hands he MAKES THE CATCH!

"For most of Warfield's tenure in Miami the Dolphins ran an offense which stressed running the ball. Warfield was considered a major threat on any given play. Even though he only caught 29 passes during the 1973 NFL season, 11 of those receptions were touchdowns."

Griese throws the ball...it hits Warfield in the hands...he makes the catch...PERFECT SEASON.

Throw Biletnikoff the ball in the playoffs or the Super Bowl...HE MAKES THE CATCH!

Dwight Clark, Michael Irvin, Lynn Swann, Jerry Rice...THEY MAKE THE CATCH!!!

Anquan Boldin...2012 playoff in Foxboro...he goes up with TWO db's on him...he MAKES THE CATCH!

every day it's "Welker Welker Welker!!!!..who is going to replace his 100+ catches?????"....hey, he laid it out there for the Pats and took some monstrous hits but I SAW the ball hit his hands...both of them...in that Super bowl...I read all the spin afterward...look, the ball HIT HIM IN THE HANDS. The ball hit him in both hands in the first half of the Ravens playoff game...I was 20 yards away...it HIT HIM RIGHT IN THE HANDS!!!!...no spin...no excuses..I SAW what I SAW in person. Every single one of those WR's I just put up MAKES that catch. I saw him drop a pass in the 2nd half with no one near him inside the Raven 30...hit BOTH HANDS in stride. Championship caliber players MAKE that catch. Almost but not good enough makes THOSE DROPS. Can we PLEASE move on from Wes Welker?

That sums it up pretty darn well. Loved Wes, attitude , toughness, leadership - all of it. But, damn, clutch time you have to make those catches, plain and simple, make the damn catch in a superbowl and you have yourself a ring. Make in an the afc championship game and you have a shot to redeem yourself.

The difference between the great and the near great could not be any clearer than succeeding when it counts the most.

Sorry, Wes, they moved on and I for one am glad. Danny is not Wes and I don't expect or really want him to be thrown to as often. DA has different skills as a slot guy and it will be fun to watch.

So are you saying they should go sign Antavious Wilson?

No, just describing his recent productivity. But that's an interesting interpretation too.

It would be even better if they came from Rutgers.

agree about Tate....

I am ready. Bit past my speedy prime. You'd soon be praying for Welker's hands though. :(
