I remember watching the Bruins vs Rangers in the playoffs the last time they met 40 years ago. IIRC, Brad Park was on that NY team and would eventually play for Boston years later.

I don't get how people don't like hockey. Especially the football crowd. It has all of the speed and physicality of Football without the endless stoppages and commercial breaks. For christsakes, playoff OT is commercial-less!!! Could you imagine the NFL going commercial-less?

I think perhaps you're conflating the Years ~ 1973 & 1974 ~ and the Teams.

Bernie Parent is the Hall of Famer ~ and former Bruin ~ who led the Flyers to back to back Stanley Cups in 1974 & 1975 ~ that crazy-@$$ Bobby Clarke & Reggie Leach team known as the Broad Street Bullies.

The first Stanley Cup Victory was in fact against us.

I'll never forget my amazement at how our Team turned around after the Esposito Trade with the Rangers. That took Balls of Steel, but Brad Park & Jean Ratelle kicked ass for us, and the Bruins ~ who were sliding into the Abyss when that Trade was made, in 1975 ~ made one Hell of a 5 Year Run, even though we never won it all.

Off the top of my head, the NYR goalie was likely Eddie Giacomin.

He is better defensively than Krug and Hamilton. Bartkowski won't be the one to sit when Seids comes back it will be Hamilton. Who is a bigger liability on defense than Bartkowski. There is a reason why Hamilton has been paired with Chara when he is in the line up.

IIRC, OTs are commercial-free in the NFL as well; I don't remember there being one in the JEST-Bills debacle.

The NFL does have more commercial breaks per half than(10) than a entire NHL game(9). In fact 2 of the Bruins/Toronto games during 3rd periods(games 3 and 5) didn't get the 3rd commercial break in because on icings and in middle of power plays. Can't go to commercial break after an icing or during a powerplay or right after a goal scored.

In the NFL there are no scheduled TV commercials during OT but they do go to them when a review is made.

Bobby Orr was the best player ever bar none and Im not just saying that as a Bruins fan. He used to kill penalties by himself skating around in circles while the other team chased him. Ive never seen any other player do that.

Watching those old games, to my eyes the rink seems so much bigger than it is now. I know (well, I'm pretty sure) it's the same size — the players have just gotten so much bigger and faster.

I agree that the NHL probably made a mistake in not coaxing the game away from what allowed the NJ Devils.
Yet to be fair to the Devils, despite their "method", NJ had that important piece that makes or breaks a team, something the Bruins largely lacked up until recent years (unless, maybe, you go back decades to "Eddy Shore, old time hockey"), a stone wall for a goalie for the playoffs. That's one thing NJ didn't lack. It is unfortunate in the days of 4, O'Reilly/the Big Bad Bruins, that they always had to face Ken Dryden every playoffs (hearing his name still pisses me off )

No doubt, football is the sport of sports. I'm concerned for the future of it due to what the owners are doing/keep trying to do but it still remains the sport of sports. It is #1 on many sports fans lists and their #2 is often far behind (TV ratings-revenues back that up). But playoff hockey is an entertaining thing to watch/follow. A much better spectator playoff sport, imho, than MLB (though I do go to more baseball games than any other sport). Just my two cents but if your a general Boston sports fan, you're missing out on some very entertaining sports watching if you are skipping these Bruins games.

Goalies like Brodeur, Dryden, and Roy were not of this world at times in the playoffs.

While I would hardly agree that the Goalie exerts more influence on a Team's Fate than the QuarterBack or ~ in a single Game ~ the Pitcher, he is certainly on the same level.

Indeed, I find that to be Hockey's least attractive Attribute.

Nobody's been more contemptuous than I of Major League BaseBall's disgusting & despicable efforts to inflate Statistics since 1987 ~ yes, it's been 26 Years since Wade Boggs hit those 24 Homers!!

But ~ at the risk of being perceived, despite my previous statement, as a fan of Point Inflation ~ I believe that Hockey would dramatically benefit from either greatly enlarging the Net or shrinking the Goalie's Stick ~ or both.

Of course there's no way that that happens: The Goalie having such an enormous influence on things presents an X Factor that produces random and sometimes shocking Upsets ~ which not only infuses the PlayOffs with added Drama, but also levels the playing field considerably, the combination of which makes the entire Regular Season more interesting, simply because You Never Know: "Maybe our Team will be the one who's Goalie gets hot!!"

But when a significantly better Team ~ and all too often even a great Team, an exciting, entertaining Team ~ loses a PlayOff Series because the inferior Team's Goalie Got Hot at the "right" time, it kind of sucks.

The dramatic increase in scoring that would result from the changes I'm proposing would of course not eliminate the powerful influence that Goalies have on their Team's Fates, obviously.

Furthermore, the Game, as it is now, is burdened with a Scoring Pace far too similar to European FootBall.

Speaking for myself ~ and billions of others, I suspect!! ~ I don't have that kind of Attention Span.

A much larger Net and smaller Stick for the Goalie, resulting in far more 9-8 Games and ~ far more importantly ~ the constantly high possibility of an imminent Score for the entire 60 Minutes, the Game would suddenly transform into 60 minutes of fast-paced, dramatic, Edge Of Your Seat Mayhem!!

Viewership, I believe, would absolutely explode.

Hockey, in fact, might very well pass BasketBall and even BaseBall in viewership in the Years ahead.

Much More Scoring = Much More Interesting = Much More Viewership = Much More Money!! :rocker:
