Chargers hire Rivera to coach LBs

thats kind of lucky to get a great D cord to be an LB coach..wonder if this will have any implication on C2 or 3-4 D

So this guy has control of the league's best defense (well that's what the experts claim) and leaves to become a LB coach for Norv Turner? Bizarre.

I said he would not be out there long but I did not think it would be this fast.
He shouldn't have moved so fast.

First off, there was a shot some team would fire their DC for a chance at him.

Second, he is now stuck as a position coach. Even if a DC comes open next year, if he is under contract, the Chargers don't have to give him permission to interview. And since one of the things that annoyed Spanos was Marty letting his position coaches interview for coordinator jobs, you can bet that Turner's contract won't let him give permission.

FWIW, I think Marty did the right thing to let his position guys interview for coordinator jobs. It should be NFL wide that they be allowed.

I don't know the structure of football staff's but isn't he setting his sights a little lower? I mean I'm sure another defensive coordinator or assistant head coaching job would of came available had he waited. I must admit I'm a little jealous of San Diego's possible good fortune. And a little suprised by Rivera's either lack of confidence in himself,or be it, lack of patience?

He probably thinks the same things about Norv as we do and realizes that a chance to jump to HC isn't that far away.

I can't think of any other reason he wouldn't wait for a coordinator spot to open up or an assistant head coach type of position.

being speculated he's doing it to get 3-4 experience to make him a more likeable candidate for a HC job in 08.

i can't believe we got 2 guys of the 6 we interviewed

basically we got the guy who taught our old OC everything he knows, a DC who i for one find very hilarious and i hope he's good, i don't know a hell of alot about him but i guess you guys do (cottrell) , and rivera who did some real nice work with the bears.

i'm just glad marty's gone, he was useless in the playoffs.

I believe that as LB coach he can take a DC job elsewhere, since it would be a promotion. In any case, he will spend the year looking for a HC position, which is probably why he is not in Chicago.

I think that's an accurate assessment. So it's really not so bizarre.

Actually it's not. Coordinators are considered the same as assistants for contract purposes. Only a move to HC can't be denied, and for an existing HC a move to GM or total control of football operations if as HC he doesn't already have that. Right after we hired Dean Pees as our newest position coach his old pal Saban tried to scoop him as Miami's DC. We denied permission to interview (which of course paid off for him a year later...). Just like AJ has denied permission for some of Marty's former staff to interview in Miami and Dallas.

As for Rivera, the weird thing is apparently he intended to remain with the Bears after getting passed over for the HC vacancies. Only Lovie had other ideas and declined to re-sign him (his contract was up). PFT says the rumor around the league is either A) they were not happy with the way he handled the Bears ultra talented defense down the stretch, and/or B) Lovie being a potential lame duck since he's being lowballed on an extension himself may have also wanted to rid his staff of a potential interim or future replacement.

Cottrell was Herms fall guy on his way out of the Big Apple. Got canned as JETS DC in Herm's last ditch shake up to salvage his job and the 2005 season. Then he got passed over entirely in 2006.

AJ is assembling a coaching staff that will not give him any flack. If they win with it he's proven the genius he likely believes he is. If not....Spanos is gonna be pretty pissed because I believe he has other pressing off field issues to deal with like finding a new stadium because SD can't or won't accommodate his need for one.
