The So-Called 2014 Patriot Cap Squeeeze

We can sign our 2014 UFAs or bring in a high priced FA. There's only a single FA left that is worth large dollars, and his number wasn't issued (#93). Richard Seymour. Forget about Freeney, Abraham and Woodson.

I suppose the Pats could sit on the money, next season Mankins contract goes positive (we won't lose money if cut - no, he won't be cut - he could be traded though). He restructures/adds more years. Wilfork (we keep him) is the same, we may have a lot of money next year. So, let's spend some this year.

It's crap that Seymour would not come back here. Maybe he goes Brian Waters and sits out most of Training Camp. If it's not yet done then we should go after him.

Yes, we can extend players. Yes, we can save the money for next year. Any money not spent is automatically carried over into 2014.

I think Bill very much wants him as they offered him a 5 year deal I believe this year. Then again this could be because they thought they could get him at a steal, but still 5 years is 5 years that is a long term commitment. Problem is if Talib plays like a long-term contract type player, we're going to get outbid. I hope not because we need a true #1 corner.

And God help us if he walks and we turn to the draft for one :bricks:

Brian Winters was an amazing player.

I don't believe it was quite 5 yrs. I thought I remembered it as either 3 or 4, and that was one man's opinion and one outlet only (LaCanfora's report).

I hear what you're saying. It's quite possible that they did offer him a multi yr deal that they could've gotten out of, but I'm still somewhat hesitant to believe that Belichick totally trusts him and is willing to spend market value on a longer term deal. We'll definitely find out soon enough.

I agree that if he plays real well and stays healthy that it may not bode well for our chances at retaining him. So in other words, we're damned if we do and damned if we don't (to a certain extent). Of course this was also depend on how much the CB market comes up again next season, which I fully expect it to.
