The Official LB Jamie Collins is an Insane Athlete Thread.

this guy really is a freak out there

Collins is definitely a boom or bust guy. It'll be interesting to see if his athleticism translates to the field.

ridiculous potential and he's on the right team to tap it.

Not to throw cold water on this, but contrast this with Tom Brady, one of the greatest quarterback this game has ever seen, but also someone who is absolutely not known for his athletic prowess.

Yep, I am still really happy Belichick didn't decide to make him a pass rushing OLB

At the end of the 2013 season, let's hope the thread title reads Jamie Collins is an Insane Footballer Thread.

Not sure where that came from but there is no comparison in the "explosion".

VJ : Collins 41.5, Crable 28
LJ : Collins 11'7", Crable 9'3"

Take a moment to actually picture it... :)

When it comes to pass-rushing OLB/DEs -- not QBs -- long, quick, explosive athletes rule the day. The draft has delivered better odds with "workout warriors" like Clay Matthews & Jason Pierre-Paul than with productive but unexplosive players like Larry English, Jerry Hughes, Robert Ayers, etc. etc.

Which is why I expect Collins to be relegated to third down pass rushing duties to begin the year (possibly the whole year). Let him use his insane athleticism to contribute in those situations while he learns the more cerebral and instinctual parts of the defense (recognizing screens, zone coverage, playaction, etc). Down the road he has the potential be a good all around OLB.

Sounds similar to what some people were proposing in regard to Chandler Jones.

I honestly have no idea what to expect from Collins early on. Coming from the worst team in the country, he presumably hasn't received very good coaching to prepare him. Yet as a converted DB, he's not the typical raw pass rusher whose responsibilities in college never extended beyond "head for the QB with your hair on fire." And he did play every down.

Solder also. Maybe Collins is a "raw prospect" who will only be able to do one thing early but based on what we heard about Solder and Jones and then what we saw from them, I'll wait to see it play out on the field.
