Sanchez is likely to be a "June 1 cut" with the cap costs spread over 2 years. Alternatively, they can convert most of his salary to a bonus and try to peddle him with $3M or $4M salary.
In this case, there would be no cap effect. There is no cap hell, no matter how much we wish it; just an awful team.

Sign the beast!

Sure, trade Mallett for a 2014 2nd and give a 6th for Sanchez, after the jets pay most of his 2013 salary as a bonus). :)

I am confused by this? Why would this mean no cap hell? They are already in the cap hell? Just because they can rid themselves of Sanchez without adding to their cap does not mean they are not in hell. With Sanchez on the team they are paying for a crappy QB, without him they are paying for a crappy QB who no longer takes a roster spot.

We should sign him. That way, if Brady does go down for the season, we can be assured of the first pick in the draft.

I'd argue that the state that they're in now is cap hell. They have a crappy team, and they know it, but they can't improve in FA because of cap constraints. Meanwhile, they just traded their best player because they can't afford to pay him what he wants.

If that's not cap hell, I dunno what is.

How do you figure that when his 2013 salary is guaranteed?

The fact that you state Sanchez should be a 6/1 cut contradicts "the no cap hell" statement.

Tannenbaum extended Sanchez’s contract last year and guaranteed his $8.25 million base salary for 2013. That is painful for the Jets. If they designate him as a June 1 cut, his cap number for 2013 remains $12.3 million and $4.8 million get pushed to the 2014 cap. If they cut him before June 1, they take the entire $17.1 million cap hit this year. There is no offset in the contract, which means if the Jets cut Sanchez, he gets the $8.25 million from the Jets and double-dips with whatever he gets from his new team, which probably wouldn’t be much more than the league minimum. The only way the Jets can recoup some of the money is by trading Sanchez, but they would have to pick up at least $6 million of the contract. He also has a $500,000 workout bonus.

It's kind of dissapointing in a way. We all expected the Jets 1-15/2-14 trainwreck to be commanded by the Sanchize. It'll still be hilarious, but not as much so with a mediocre rookie QB. Hopefully Holmes/Rex have some good soundbytes left in them.

Cutting Sanchez adds $5M to the cap. This can be deferred. If Snachez is traded at say a $3M salary, the cap cost is minimal.

2013 free agency is essentially over. The jets can have absorbed the cost of the Sachez debacle this year and move on. Worst case is that they have a minimal amount of 2014 dead money.

You guys keep loosely talking about cap hell, as you used to when Manning was with the colts.

I guess that patriots are in cap hell. We couldn't afford to pay Welker $7M a year.

How exactly are the jets in cap hell because they refuse to pay Revis SIXTEEN million a year?

Some teams are not willing to pay a non-quarterback that kind of money. BTW, the patriots are one of those teams.

I almost wonder whether Sanchez would bother to sign with another team. The money he'd make would be a pittance compared to what he's already raked in, and he doesn't give me the impression of a guy who really loves the game. I suppose he might want to prove that his failures were really the team's fault?

You may be right. He's getting $8.25M. He might as well not sign any restructure which would allow him to be traded. After all, he would end up playing for zero additional compensation.

HOWEVER, if Sanchez is a free agent, there may be a fit somewhere in the league that would want him for a 1-year show-me contract.

Um, I am not sure, but I read both articles linked here, including the one you linked, and they both seem to completely disagree with what you are saying here. So either I am misunderstanding what they say or you are.

I guess we disagree on interpretation. We'll say. I will be clear for the "record". Sanchez will not be on the 53 man roster to start the season for the jets.

From the Jet's cap page. They cut him after June 1 they take a 12.85 million hit this year and a $4.8 million next year

B. Designate Sanchez a June 1 cut. This doesn’t help you with cap room until June 1st but it keeps you from losing cap room by the outright release of the player. If you designate Sanchez a June 1 cut you will retain his $12.85 million cap charge until June 1st rather than taking on the $17.15 million charge. Once June 1 hits his cap charge will reduce to $12.353 million and you will take the $4.8 million balance as a charge in 2014.
