Is Spikes time with the pats limited?
Limited to what? To the end of his contract? Same question can be asked of every player.
Spikes has been a playmaker, solid against the run, and when let loose good at putting pressure on the QB. I think he will be offered a contract extension. It may be enough to keep him for a few more years. Unless he and his agent think that there are bigger $ waiting for him as a FA.

Nothing that happened in the draft changed that.
Ive noticed in the last couple of days a number of post about getting rid of Spikes. I don't get it Spikes is arguably the heart of the defense along with VW, when hes on the field the whole defense plays better. So why in the world would any fan want to get rid not only of a play maker (we need all we can get) and a player that inspires his team mates to play harder. He reminds me of Brian Cox in his enthusiasm?

Him and Wilfork are the D.

If we had better safety play and more reactive CBs, nobody would give a p00t about his pass coverage. A legit hard-hitting safety on the field at the same time as Spikes? Our D would be very tough indeed. He's exactly what he needs to be and he's constantly one of the 2 most disruptive players out there. He's also the one that keeps the energy going the WHOLE GAME.

I'd say the draft would be to help build around him not help build him out of town.

He brings that hard-hitting attitude that sparks the team. Mayo is the brains but Spikes is the heart of this defense. He'd have to commit a felony, star in a porn feature, get busted for a DUI, and hit his girlfriend before BB will cut or trade him.

He also makes game-changing plays. That alone makes him a very integral part of the D.

The only reason to want him is because he is a player with balls on a defense that is filled with players that lack them.

That said he is a huge liability against the pass in a passing league. I don't think a run-stuffer is worth as much as it used to be. So yes I think if Spikes wants a lot his time is done with us and BB is more than prepared for that. When Hightower was drafted I think the writing was on the wall.

Spikes was having a Pro Bowl calibre season last year through the first 8-12 weeks or so. Seemed to taper off towards the end (injury? fatigue?).

He made a few clutch tackles and forced fumbles at key moments.

I think he's a gifted player who can be an assassin against the run. I also think he is a liability in pass defense and, at times, trends toward being a knucklehead with his tweets and other off-field comments. I sense that BB doesn't entirely trust him or his game at all times. Just my opinion. I think he has a more elevated sense of his value to the team than Bill's.

And you are basing this on what? Also the read option is the new in thing I guess and that is all about the run. So off the top of my head the 49ers, Seahawks, Texans, Vikings, Redskins, and Ravens all have above average running games so there will always be a need for a run stuffing LB.

Ok my friend you are reaching way deep on this one! What press conference are you referring to or what comments are you referring to? The word is called "speculation" which means made up, and not based on facts. For all you know it could be totally the opposite and he trust him more than you know. If he didn't trust him, he wouldn't be out there.

Depends on what we do. Assuming Collins pans out, Spikes is only staying for starters money. That would mean Hightower, Spikes, Collins, and Mayo would all need to be on the field. In a 34 that MIGHT be able to pulled off. However Chandler would be completely wasted and we don't have the 5tech DEs to pull that off.

Maybe if we can get a 25 formation of...
Kelly-Wilfork-(Chandler)
Hightower, Spikes, Mayo, Collins

But I'm not sure when we'd ever do that. We'd get trampled against the run and it really wouldn't offer much if anything in the way of against the pass- we would be better off with DBs. Maybe if we had a second Wilfork we might be able to pull that off, but thats not happening any time soon.

I just don't know why we drafted Hightower. I loved him as a prospect, but he is a terrible fit for what we wanted to do and who we had on the roster. Rather have spent that first round pick and late pick we used to trade up on DB help, have kept Spikes as our MLB, mayo at OLB and Collins or any other true 43 OLB.

Just seemed like a really really really bad fit in every relevant way.

Spikes is gone. There is no way to keep him and everyone else on the field (assuming Collins pans out). And even if Collins doesn't, Spikes is extremely limited and doesn't have the range you absolutely need out of 43 LBers.

There is a need but if he wants to much he isn't worth it due to his 1 dimensionality. All those teams can pass right over his head too thats why its an effective offense because these guys can not only run but throw.

He's a tone setter and is one of the few guys on the D that brings some nastiness to the field, but IMO his time is limited with us, wish we could keep everyone but there is a cap.

FOXBORO, Mass. — Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes has clearly found himself in Bill Belichick‘s good graces.

Belichick glowed about Spikes on Thursday, running through a list of his accolades, comparing him to some very good players and detailing the positive aspects of his game. Spikes has been worthy of that praise of late, as his performance in the playoffs has played a key role in the improvement of New England’s defense.

“Brandon comes from a good background, good program, good defensive background,” Belichick said. “Like every other college player, what he saw in college and what he sees in the NFL are not quite the same thing relative to option offenses and the skill level of quarterbacks, particularly the intermediate passing game, things like that, different types of play action that we see relative to what colleges do for the most part. That’s been a big learning experience for him, but Brandon’s a very instinctive player, and he catches on quickly. He just kind of knows where the ball is, and sometimes it’s not exactly the way you would coach it in terms of the keys, and what his footwork, and steps and all that would be, but he has a good ability to find the ball and know where the play is — the interception he had last week, the one he had last year against the Jets on a similar type of play.”

Belichick compared Spikes’ size — he’s 6-foot-2 and 250 pounds — to that of Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher and Patriots defensive line coach Pepper Johnson, who starred for Belichick in New York and Cleveland.

“[Spikes] is tall like Pepper was,” Belichick said. “You don’t see a lot of inside linebackers with that kind of height, that 6-foot-4ish height. Most guys are a little more compact than that. He’s a pretty powerful guy for being that tall like Pepper was, but a lot of those explosive hitters are 6 feet, 6-foot-1, that type of guy. Urlacher is another. I’m just saying there aren’t a lot of them, and I think that’s a problem for the quarterback in terms of the passing game because of their length, their height, their range. They get their hands on a lot of balls, but again, kind of like Pepper, Brandon has power. He’ll go up and strikes with a good thump, whether it’s tackling or taking on blockers, that kind of thing.”

Spikes only played in eight regular-season games, and he missed seven straight down the stretch after injuring his knee against the Giants in Week 9, which derailed his midseason progression.

The 2010 second-round pick has picked it up in the playoffs, posting 16 tackles (six solo), one sack, two quarterback hits, one interception and one fumble recovery.

“He’s long, he’s powerful, he’s an explosive guy,” Belichick said. “He’s very instinctive, which is the biggest part of that position. The more you are in the middle of the field, the more guys there are around you, the more things you have to see, the more things that can happen. The better it is for those players to be able to sort it all out and figure out what’s going on. Sometimes that comes easier to some players than others. I think it comes relatively easy to him. He has a good sense for that.”

Horses mouth!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok so how many productive draft picks has BB just let walk? Branch is really the only one I can think of. Even Seymour signed an extension before being traded. Who else and why could they not resign Spikes?

Why did they draft Hightower I don't really think he's meant to be a long-term solution at OLB.

Is Spikes time with the pats limited?

I would think so. In terms of coverage he's perhaps the outright worst LB at it in the NFL. He has linemen level speed. You love his tenacity and toughness. But for every one of those splash bone-crushing hits he doles out, there's 4 or 5 instances of him being 3-5 yards behind the pass catcher he's chasing in man coverage.

He's strictly a 2 down LB. He should not see the field in obvious passing situations. I think the team plans to move on if he thinks he's worth anything more than that. I understand that his instincts and enforcer mentality makes him a fan favorite to some, but Hightower could probably slide into the MLB spot and be a force there too.

I hope not, I love Spikes' attitude and hard hits. If only he had Mayo speed. That would be something.

That would be the perfect linebacker

Ok what are you basing this on? The problem with your post is the word "I". It does not matter what "you" and "I" think. What if BB loves him on the outside because he can come down off the edge and rush the passer. When BB has talked about Jamie Collins he keeps comparing him to Hightower with versatility to rush the passer OFF THE EDGE!

So according to you Hightower is moved to the middle and you have taken away from his game to rush the passer from the outside.

I think the team would like him to stay if he accepts a less than 3 down role.

What the Patriots are building, IMO, is not a 3-4 or 4-3 defense with set players. Then want interchangeable pieces to be able to set into place any kind of defense they need to.

When they need to dial up the pass rush they'll bring on Collins and kick in some DEs inside and get at it. When they want to go heavy and stop the run they'll go 3-4 and blitz Spikes up the middle.

Jamie Collins is not a DE and he's certainly not a LDE so don't count on him replacing Ninkovich at any point. Jamie Collins is not a run stuffer at all, that's the biggest knock against him.

Brandon Spikes' contract will expire. We will extend him an offer. He will get a better offer somewhere else.

When exactly did Hightower rush the passer from the outside?
