Anyone know what "off season workouts" Loyko would be referring to here :

When looking at the Patriots draft class.. you need to put Armond Armstead in there. I was told he "looked unreal" in off-season workouts

-----

With the voluntary program just starting last week, have there been "off-season workouts" ?

Regardless, if Armstead does look good with Kelly added and Vince still leading up the middle there won't be much use for much else at DT. Love or Deaderick, probably, and that should just about do it at DT.

I really think a lot of the pats success this year defense wise will depends on how Armstead and Kelly perform. If one or both can prove disruptive in their roles on the DL I think our defense has a chance to take a leap this year.

We will have a settled backfield in Dennard, Talib, McCourty and Wilson. A settled LB trio of Mayo, Spikes and Hightower.

If Armstead can come in and not be a JAG at DE/DT and Kelly can provide some penetration on 2nd and 3rd and long. I can see us being much improved. That's not to mention any of our draft pick's impacts.

Also notice how we didn't draft any defensive tackle in the draft??

There's obviously some deep confidence put into this guy.

Pats D could take a leap this year......

Let's hope that we have a surprize in store with a stingy D yardage wise. ( as well as point wise)

He means the workouts he did in front of teams in free agency, I'd imagine.

Armstead is going to be remembered as the unsung free agent that was signed this year.

The dude is a beast and when you see a quarterback trying to run to his right, it will be a combination of Armstead, Ninkovich and the combination of Collins, Cunningham, Francis, Bequette and hopefully Buchanan pushing that line backwards giving the QB little to no space to operate.

Ninkovich/Armstead - Wilfork - Kelly/Armstead - Jones

Hightower/Collins - Spikes/Hightower - Mayo

Dennard - McCourty - Adrian Wilson - Talib

Now - go out there and take it.

For the 3rd consecutive season we've been proposing this. You have to wonder when it will actually occur. 2013 would be nice as I've had enough of other franchises winning the Superbowl.

The D has gotten steadily better

Given where they started, getting better shouldn't have been a difficult proposition. They need to be pushing themselves into the elite category soon given the O's propensity to stall come late January early February.

We always say every off season..this is the year with the D. But i really think this year they will take a big step in the right direction. Especially in the front 7 and their pressure on the QB which would help the DBs so much.

Would maybe the D contribute to that stall? You have to realize they will be facing the best d's of the season. And alot of teams will stall. But having a D that can't cause the other teams O to stall makes our O look worse IMO.

I've been of the opinion that the D and O have both crumbled under playoff intensity when both needed one drive to regain momentum. From where I sit, it's a team loss.

I'm optimistic. Going into the start of the last few seasons, we knew we had issues with areas on defense. BB has rebuilt this defense from the championship years without the benefit of low draft choices from wins and losses. At some point, the offense will deteriorate, and I hope we have a stout defense in place.

Well I didn't see the O stalling the last game. It was a mere struggle to put up Tds. Which I think is the root problem on O. Maybe with our bigger receivers now we won't have that issue. We can move the ball on O, but its hard for Brady to thread the needle for a TD when your guys aren't necessarily big targets and can get out manned. Just look at the last Super Bowl and the AFCCG, we drove the ball, but if we would have had a TD in the Super Bowl instead of a FG and Tds instead of FG's in the AFCCG who knows what happens. But a crappy D doesn't help the O.

I agree, mostly.

In addition, strangely, no one has packed up Seymour. Perhaps he wishes to miss TC for some fortunate team (LOL, I didn't say us ... yet) (Someone on DL won't make the team, like Deaderick). I don't believe he's done. :)

Yes it did, it went from 31st in pass defense in 2011 to 29th in 2112. And i think it was 32 in 2010 so it has steadily improved :)

Yards are inconsequential when it is the job of the O to score points. They absolutely stalled and quite obviously after half time.

I'm hopeful that the Patriots have a more complete team in 2013.

Someone posted that for the last half of the 2012 season we were 11th, after being 31st in the 1st half

That is correct Palm Beach - once Talib was added to the active roster, the Pats were 11th best in yardage in the NFL. Lets just hope for improvement from our guys and of course, good health. Good health means a lot in the playoffs especially on the defensive side of the ball....

But I mean we had no issue getting to the red zone. We stalled in getting Tds is what I mean. So will bigger wide receivers and causing other teams to slow down down in the red zone makes the O be less perfect.
