Welcome to the New England Patriots, Illinois DE Michael Buchanan

Excellent pick, he was slated to go by most experts in rounds 3 or 4. It may take a while for these pass rushers to reach their potential, but with Collins, Buchanon and Armstead added, and the continued progress of Jones, Hightower, Francis and Bequette, this defense should be interesting to watch.

Jermaine Cunningham is packing his bags as we speak...

All joking aside, this a good solid pick. He will have a role on this team in the future one way or another. I'm impressed with Coach's ability to find these diamonds in the rough in the later rounds.

This might end up being the Patriots' overall best pick in this draft years down the road.

if he didn't get in that brawl before the 2012 season..he wouldn't have dropped 20 lbs and could have been a 2nd rd pick. A lot of upside there

So, is this Buchanan kid more of a DE than OLB?

Maybe this and the Collins pick, motivate Cunningham to be all that he can be. I don't care who gets the sacks, as long as they come. I don't need a guy leading the league in sacks, but if 10 guys can get 5 sacks each, well you know where I'm going here, 50 sacks would help the secondary.

Can you elaborate on this please? I don't understand the 20 pounds or the brawl.

Thanx.

he was involved in a fight..broke his jaw and had to have it wired shut...when your jaw gets wired shut..you usually lose some weight

oh..so he's a bigmouth???

why didn't the Jets sign him, then?

Rex musta fell asleep after gnoshing down a few dozen toes...

I'm a big fan of this pick.

Looks like a good pick. Once again Belichick seems to be looking at prospects who would have been higher ranked had they not dealt with adverse circumstances their senior year. That seems to be coming a common theme with many off their picks the last few years, Gronkowski, Hernandez, T. Wilson, J. Collins, J. Boyce, and probably a number of others i am not thinking of right now.

I couldn't help but think, after we picked Buchanan, that it was deja vu all over again. Think about it.

Last season Patriot nation got their panties in a bunch when we picked Tavon Wilson in the 2nd round, and then very quietly selection Alphonso Dennard in the 7th. Had we picked Dennard in the 2nd and Wilson in the 7th, no one would have said a word, except that Dennard was a slight reach in the 2nd and Wilson was a tremendous value in the 7th.

Well you can say the same thing THIS year. If the Pats had selected Buchanan at the end of the 3rd round, no one would have been in a uproar, and consequently they all would have been thrilled to get such a good value in the 7th in Harmon.

The thing is that as fans we get so wrapped up in the "fine art of draft management" that we can sometimes forget the purpose of the draft, which is to improve the talent of the team. The SECOND the last pick was selected, WHERE people were selected ceased to have meaning. All that matters now is that 90 guys are going to camp and the best 53 of them will make the team....REGARDLESS of where you were drafted or if you were drafted at all. This is especially true in the era of the rookie salary cap

I just find it odd that we attach so much meaning and importance as to WHERE these guys were picked as opposed to simply how well they play. BB himself makes it clear that once practices start, it doesn't matter how you got there, but rather how you play. And our stellar record of playing with UDFAs should make that even more clear. IIRC didn't we have have something ;like 12 guys on our superbowl roster who started their NFL careers as UDFA's?

Yep. Probably best off looking at the list of players in alphabetical order, not in draft order, and ask yourself if you would've been happy with that on Thursday morning.

To add to the pick, he and tavon wilson are friends.

I didn't read up enough on this guy either. Have gone back to several scouting reports - most of which note that in 2011 Buchanan was more impressive than 2012 1st round pick Whitney Mercilus such as this tidbit -

"... when I evaluated Whitney Mercilus for the 2012 NFL Draft, Buchanan was more explosive and productive than Mercilus in nearly every game I evaluated."

The jaw being wired shut and losing 20lbs over the summer when he should have been bulking up really took him off his game - apparently for much of the 2012 season. If, and note that i say IF, Buchanan's slip in performance was due to physical difficulties (and the frustrations that arose from them) then BB got an absolute steal that may make the excellent Dennard pick look like small peanuts.

Michael Buchanan

My expectations of Buchanan are high

My guess is that Mike will be one of the top 2 best rookies on this team from the 2013 class....maybe even better than our top selections.....we will see.

It was a very good draft move from what I see.
