2013 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl Scouting Recap

-The safety group had some nice upside as well. The most impressive of the safeties was Rutgers’ Duron Harmon. He was easily the best athlete at the position and his breaking ability and fluid hips were very impressive. He came in at 6-0 and 198 pounds and shows very good feet and explosiveness. On one play during team he sprinted from the opposite hash to cover a drag route and came close to intercepting a pass thrown out in front of the receiver. On another short hand off play he came flying up from about 12 yards deep to stick the running back at the line of scrimmage. He definitely plays faster than his estimated 4.6 speed.

NFLPA Collegiate Bowl 2013: TV schedule, draft prospects to watch - Niners Nation

Rutgers free safety Duron Harmon will need to have a good game to help his draft stock. Harmon has had a good week of practices in which analysts felt he was very physical and could at the very least be a good special teams player while he develops.

NFLPA Bowl: Which Players Should be on the Washington Redskins Radar?

Duron Harmon, SS, Rutgers - Scouts consider Harmon the best athlete at his position in this bowl game. There has been estimated 40 times for him around the 4.6 range, which is really slow. But scouts called him the most explosive defensive back at the NFLPA bowl, with great instincts. He plays faster than his “estimated” time.

I think BB drafted this kid to prove to the world the greatness of Brady.

"We can draft complete bums, but we'll still win our share of games because we got 12"

When Brady retires, we are so f#cked.:(
Hopefully, you and the rest of the bandwagon riders will find another team du jour to root for. Feel free to leave early.

this is the worst draft ever..pats will never win another game

(love this place :D)

Well hopefully Harmon will be as **hated** as that Ridley pick, cos we all know how that WASTED 3rd rounder turned out! ;)

I think a lot of people are shocked at this pick, but they shouldn't be knowing how the Patriots operate. There's a least one or more 'surprise' selections each year. Tavon Wilson was no different last year.

They obviously felt the prospect was good enough to warrant a third round selection. Whether or not we agree with this or not is a moot point. Duron is now a New England Patriot, which means we should all be wishing nothing but the best for this young man.

Rutgers was 4th in points allowed and 17th in opposing passing efficiency last year among FBS programs

edit: and 10th in total defense 9th in turnovers gained

BB on Harmon: “Thought it was a good value when we took him. I don’t know how the other teams have their board stacked or anything else.”

I don't see what the issue is. Belichick reportedly attempted to trade down, got either no offers or no offers that were good enough, and then picked the next player on his board. Is there really a problem with adding an intelligent, high-character, athletic player that a member of the Patriots' staff knows better than any other non-player in the NFL possibly except Schiano?

This is the third round. The Patriots are a good enough team that safe third round picks aren't really good enough. They picked a player they liked. It's not worth throwing a fit over.

Rutgers again: Pats take safety Duron Harmon | Comcast SportsNet - CSNNE.com

I have seen enough of Rutgers to know that Harmon and Ryan are pretty solid and anyone underestimating them are probably the same ___________ who didn't like the McCourty pick.

Harmon has good closing speed and knows his role which is a little important.

I also watched more Collins tape. I will comment on that thread.

The fact that Collins was not rated by the drafting services doesn't mean that he cannot help this team. I like what I see and don't be surprised that he becomes a leader in the defensive secondary.

how different is he going to be from tavon wilson? do they play the same position? just trying to find out if he is going to be a starter type contributor or added as depth.

Oh, and it should be pretty clear that a lot of NFL teams look at safeties far differently than most fans. I would have said that was the position with the biggest difference, but then this draft's QB class happened.

He is very similar to Tavon Wilson - smart, good character, captain of his team's defense, good at reading plays, hits well. Harmon had a 3.4 gpa. I think you nailed it. Belichick wants smart guys back there who understand what they see in front of them and is less concerned about raw physical talent.
