Ryan Mallett trade rumors resurface, hours before draft begins

Why would the CBA deal make it unlikely?

He is signed through 2014. Which means whatever team trades for him has him under his rookie deal for the next two years and has those two seasons to extend him

But this is what I see happening if Mallett to the Browns happens. Browns trade back from the #6, pick up a 2nd and ship that to the Pats for Mallett.

FWIW, one more interesting piece of information on the subject of Mallett and trade rumors.

It is also believed that the Denver Broncos were interested in trading Tim Tebow and a second-round pick for Mallett last season, but the talks went nowhere. Denver then dealt Tebow to the New York Jets and drafted quarterback Brock Osweiler.

Guess what, We already have a QB that compares to Flacco. His name is Ryan Mallett. Why trade a guy so we can pick another guy with way less experience, do we want a rookie starting if (God Forbid) Brady gets hurt ?

Why not if it nets the Pats an extra 2nd? Not saying I like Glennon, but if Brady is injured then the season is over anyway.

Ryan Mallett trade rumors resurface, hours before draft begins
By: John Morgan

Just hours before the 2013 NFL draft commences, rumors that the Patriots will deal QB Ryan Mallett have heated up....

At this point I'd be mega happy with their 3rd and 4th. Just get all this rumor talk over and make something happen.

If the price is right, anything is for sale. That is why. This is what a sound businessman does anyway.

I could see the Browns' 2013 3rd and 2014 2nd getting it done. Only other step up from that would be like a 2013 6th and 2014 1st, which is probably pretty optimistic.
I think you are on the right track here, Sciz. I think a 2013 5th, along with a conditional 2014 pick that could range from a 4th to a 1st depending on Mallet's production with a 2nd being the most likely result. IMHO that would be a fair deal for both sides, given Mallet's lack of on field experience.

If that's the case, I hear Jamarcus Russell is available. If you know that won't be winning the big one, why not just San Antonio Spur the season away for better picks the year after?

I too, am wondering this. Wouldn't that be a good thing they don't have to extend him now? can always franchise tag later.

derek anderson is more accurate.......

glennon is a huge step backwards from mallett.......anything anyone dislikes about mallett, glennon is worse in the exact same ways......

mallett's better than any QB in this year's draft.......anyone considering drafting a QB this year should be on the phone with the pats.....

to me, the bidding would start with Jags at #33......anything less than that is not worth making the deal

I know it's not going to happen but if your Lombardi and plan to use the 6th pick on a QB like Smith, why not trade for a QB your reportedly in love with and won't have to shell out a mega contract?

I would be surprised if this happens. Not sure why people are so eager to trade Mallet for picks and acquire yet another unproven QB who then has to show he can master our complicated offense. The fact that Hoyer was promptly cut last season shows that BB had confidence in Mallett. Not sure why BB would be in a hurry to lather, rinse, repeat.

I think the Pats not wanting to pay $2 million to Brian Hoyer had as much to to do with him getting cut.

Also they have Brady through 2017 and this would be the peak time to trade Mallett. As next year is his last year of his rookie deal so they probably wouldn't get offered more than a 4th rounder as whatever team could just wait the season and go after him in free agency.

I bet the browns trade down to acquire a 2nd rounder to trade for mallett OR they will trade down into the late round of the first and give the Patriots a late first rounder. Then the Patriots will take that and trade it down for more picks. Then trade it down for more picks, then trade it down for more picks, then trade it down for picks next year, then next year then next year. ;)

I heard you like picks, so we put 2 picks in your pick so you can have 3 picks while you pick for next years picks picks.

There are two reasons I can think of:

(1) They like a guy coming out of this draft more than they like Mallett.

(2) If it's even-steven, then at least they get the new guy on a rookie contract for longer than they could retain Mallett.

Either option is reason enough to make the trade.

Not sure why you want to trade our high upside backup QB for slop just to get it over with.

I said it before and I'll say it again - I would only trade Mallett for a #1 or for a #2 and #3 in any combination of this years and next year.

Source on team that inquired Pats about Ryan Mallett: "He'd be first overall pick in this draft. He's had two years in Pats system."

mike freeman ‏@realfreemancbs 20m
Source adds that Patriots don't seem serious in any way about trading him.

It would take at least Mallett and the Pats' first rounder to trade up to get the #6 pick (probably more, potentially much more).

Mallett has shown nothing to justify a high pick. I'm all for the Patriots robbing another team, but that's exactly what that would be. People making the "I wouldn't take less than a ..." lines are insane.
