Let's go thru the trades first. Cleveland trades 6 to Miami for 12 and 42. Miami wants Lane Johnson. Cleveland will also trade down from 12 IMO. Just not with us.

Cleveland trades 42 for Ryan Mallett. He's clearly more ready to step in and play than any of these qb's coming out this year. Also, a conditional pick next year. Can't be a first. If starts 10 or more games and .500 record in those games another 2. If less than .500 a three. If he doesn't play, no extra pick..

Buffalo wisely doesn't take a qb at 8, but Marrone wants his Cuse guy. Trades us 41 and 71 for 29. We make out a little. 640 to 730. But, that's not a big gap when a qb is involved.

Some very good names there, in particular Ogletree and Slay. Hopkins' performance against LSU in the bowl game will always stay with me as one of the greatest performances I've seen and I think he's a very good safe prospect (which we probably need) but I'm less convinced he fits our offensive style like a Robert woods does for example. Not a criticism of the pick, just a different outlook.

In fact, having just re-looked at the picks, I realise there's not a prospect there that gives me any real concern so a really good mock. Good job.

I did cherry pick your idea of getting an olb early. So, kudos there. I was thinking of Ogletree early in the year, and then his off the field problems surfaced. If he's going to drop that far. I'm willing to gamble Two things about Woods. He sulked when Marquise Lee passed him on the totem pole. Major red-flag for me. Strikes me as that selfish, me-first attitude that so many wr's possess. And, for some reason BB doesn't draft USC guys. I think it's the "Look Ma, I'm a star attitude many of them have." Clemson has run a very diverse offense. Even though it's a spread. They sure seem to throw a lot at their guys. Doubt they're spending too much time in the real classroom. But, hey it is what it is. When Sammy Watkins broke on the scene in 2011, I watched a lot of their games. And, Hopkins is the one who seemed to make all of their big catches.

Ha, sorry for stealing your trades. I read so many mocks they all run together. I just went with Cleveland and Miami because Fish have two seconds and a need at LT. The Mallett to Cleveland has been out there a while. They just can't give up a first for him. A couple of teams could move into 29. I went with Buffalo because it gives us the back to back picks. I think Smith will go earlier than everyone is mocking. Prob Arizona. I think Philly trades up for EJ Manuel and Buff will be worried Nassib doesn't slide to them.

Ogletree is funny because some sources say solid first round and others bottom of the second. I think he's that polarizing player who some teams are OK with his past given his talent and other have probably taken him off the board or at least knocked him down a round. I cannot see a team rolling the dice in the top ten though.

I would love it if the first mock came to fruition. Unfortunately, I don't see any way Ogletree falls to 42. I would gladly sub him out with a DE like Moore or Okafor though. I would also love it if Swearinger fell to us at 71. Swope at 91 would be a good pick because, at the very least, he would have the "Brandon Tate effect", where his pure speed alone forces at least one safety to stay deep.

3. Interesting that they showed quite a lot of interest in Clemson guys this year. someone elsewhere actually suggested that might be because of Andre Ellington as a Woodhead replacement. Who knows.

This is like a dream draft, I doubt we'll ever get this lucky. BUT, excellent job patsfaninpa, love every pick you made. Maybe you need to call BB and apply for a job, Draft Expert. Great job, love it !

I can't speak for Clemson, but the issue with USC is that there have certainly been players that appear to fill needs (e.g., their linebackers), but BB has stayed away from USC in the early rounds like the plague.

It's less likely now that they've given up a first rounder, but I still think that TB are a good bet for a Mallett trade. However I do think Mallett will be our backup for the whole year and won't be traded until next year.

The paradox here is that this year has an extraordinarily awful group of QBs, while next year's crop looks to be significantly better. So he *might* not be able to get as much for Mallett next year as he could this year.

I don't think they will get as much because Mallett will only have a year left on his contract anyway. The next years crop will be better is a reasonable one but doesn't necessarily follow. Last year, people were excited by the potential of Logan Thomas, Tyler Bray, Landry Jones, Matt Barkley and Tyler Wilson. A lot changes in a year. I just think not having anyone else having spent anytime in the system precludes a Mallett trade.

Which leads to a question. Have we ever had a backup that hasn't spent time in the system before becoming the main backup?

Edit: And in answer to my own question, yes we have in Brian Hoyer who was the sole backup at the start of his first regular season in '09. So i suppose it's possible that Kafka might be considered for the #1 backup position.

Like your thinking but I do not think that the Browns will offer more that a 4th rounder this year and conditional next year (2 round high - 5th round low) for Mallett.

But if we could land Hopkins, Slay , and Swope, I would call it a very good draft..

I like Woods but Hopkins is much more explosive and i have him rated over Woods at this point. If they go Hopkins in the first i will be really happy with the pick.

I'm not sure I'd describe Hopkins as explosive - in fact I'd say that Woods is much more quick-twitch. Hopkins is a fine receiver, very reliable, excellent hands and routes and I like him plenty but he doesn't have the quickness and ability to make players miss that Woods does. I'd much rather run a screen to Woods for example but I'd probably rely more on Hopkins to get a clutch first down. Swings and roundabouts, but we're an offense relying on quickness from our receivers which is why I edge towards Woods. Just my two cents.
