Looks like different team, same idiot. He was arrested early this evening on a drunk and disorderly and resisting arrest charge in his hometown.

Rolando McClain Arrested Again In Decatur | WHNT.com

This will be the true test if Ozzie Newsome has this guy on a short leash or not. A week after he is signed, he is arrested.

In all likelihood, McClain will be released within the next 24 hours.

The Ravens were smart to not have guaranteed anything to him. Thus giving them the ability to move on with zero financial impact in the event of something like this.

If true, wow!
I know the guy is still young (around 24) but this is year 3 in the NFL for him. To still display such a willful disregard for the potential trouble for his team and himself? And not just a momentary lapse in judgment type of trouble, this appears to be a blatant embrace of it.
This just doesn't sound like a story that will have a good ending without some significant reorganization of thinking/behavior.

The Ravens guaranteed nothing to him? Smart move on their part.
I'd also be surprised if he isn't let go immediately -- with the possible exception of ON believing his LB situation is so weak that RM is remains worth the trouble/risk.

IIRC, a lot of his trouble has been in Decatur. I don't know much about him, but I want to say that it may be his hometown (?) That's one town he needs to stay the hell away from, although anyone with common sense would have figured that out by now.

As far as being immediately cut, I'm not so sure. I'd say it's probably 50/50 in my opinion. He's still got upside on the football field for a very cheap salary, and they can likely get a bunch of games out of him for at least this year.

Baltimore--while having a great GM/front office and a very decent coach, doesn't seem like the "zero tolerance" establishment to me. One has to consider the level of talent and production by bringing in some other scrub that they're going to pay 700k to this year.

Hard to say, but at the moment I'd guess there are some teams that wouldn't mind having Dumervil, Suggs, and Upshaw as their LB's--even without McClain. A nice top 3 round draft pick out of their 13 picks this year and they are probably in fine shape.

I know that Danelle Ellerbe is considered an irreplacable all-pro around these parts and all, but my guess is that they'll muddle through without him, his 7 starts last season (14 starts in four yrs), and his one acceptable year.

Agreed. I was just speculating that ON may feel he is not as set as he would like to be......which may make him cut RM some slack.
As to what his mind set actually is?? Who knows. I would say it seems as though the Ravens are not adverse to players that are significantly less than stellar members of society (of course being a 'boy scout' is certainly not a requirement to be a top tier NFL player).

This one doesn't really sound that bad.

As an individual incident I would agree. But given past problems and given that this latest incident displayed a level of extended disregard to the ramifications, that takes the seriousness of it to a higher degree. Put another way, given the past issues, he should be walking away as fast as possible from an incident that starts brewing. Yet the details of this incident indicate the opposite, indicate someone ready to dive into the fray. As an NFL player who has had issues before, that is indicative of a troubling thought process.
With that said, this is a first report from a media that continues to be suspect in its reporting of facts. RM very well could have been at the wrong place at the wrong time and not been as culpable as reported.

Oh, I'd definitely guess that they'll be looking at a higher round rookie LB pick--you're probably right about that. That said, if he's worth anything at all they may be in better shape than many seem to be giving them credit for. We'll have to see. I seem to think they'll be the same 10-6 pain in the ass team that we often see just about every year, but many think they are in a downward spiral.

I'm assuming that R.McClain may be more for a rotational role in the first place, depending on how the rookie looks. They also have Jameel McClain as a LB, but I think he's primarily a ST player.

I'm just saying that we've seen ILB's lately that look just fine in the first/second round of the draft, so that player may make Ronaldo McClain moot anyway if he's worth a damn. If not there's still a chance they may keep McClain to play this year on such a cheap salary. It isn't like they have much invested in him on a 700k/one yr deal.

They're all thugs and morons...but like you said, some of those thugs and morons can still play football. On top of that they enjoy that "smack you in the mouth" mentality down there in BAL, so we'll have to see where they actually draw the line.

I'm venturing down there this season for the Dec.22nd game. I will not be wearing my Gronk jersey, I can tell you that

The question of questions after the loss to Ravens, do we add more thugs to increase the physical game?

Probably a very good call on the Gronk Jersey!
I've been to Baltimore quite a few times. Some areas to avoid (as with many big cities) but the harbor area is nice. Haven't been there in a while but I remember the James Joyce Pub (not too far from the stadium) as a good place to eat/drink. I stay across the street from it at the Homewood (I've also stayed at the Hampton just outside the stadium.....it's a fairly good place to stay). I like that James Joyce Pub surrounding area in general. A fair amount of good places to eat and/or drink. Enjoy....

Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like to make the most of their God given talents in pursuit of a successful career in the NFL. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

I dunno. My memories of Balmer are more in line with what you saw in the series "The Wire"

Maybe I just didn't get down to the rich areas, but as far as I was concerned, I tried hard not to have to go there except when business demanded it.

I'm prone to feeling bad for self-destructive athletes, I'm not entirely sure why. There are so many guys out there with the talent to thrive, but just can't get out of their own way. McClain had to have someone tell him that he's nearing last chance territory, and yet he's out getting into trouble for no reason.

Some guys are similar to McClain, but different in that they have a great career and make millions, but then are utterly broke by their 40's due to leeching, lying and incompetent financial discipline. It's a story that's repeated itself time and time again.

The first paragraph of the OP could have been your first clue. :rocker:

The first sentence of the article could have been your second. :bricks:

:D:D:D

Idiot. Guy gets another lease on his football life and isn't smart enough to get out of dodge when something like this happens.

I was in the camp that applauded Newsome for signing him so....... :bricks:

What an idiot this guy is. Million dollar talent and a ten cent head.

For what it's worth, a pair of fan sites opining on McClain's contracts.

The recent contract was for $700k, not guaranteed, with another $400k in LTBE incentives - that were apparently based on behavior.

Rolando McClain Contract Loaded With Incentives - Ebony Bird - A Baltimore Ravens Fan Site.

A bit more news has come out today about the 1 year $700,000 contract that Rolando McClain signed with the Ravens on Friday. The Contract has incentives, quite a few of them.

Presumably the incentives are based on behavior, whether or not McClain makes the roster and whether he gets a starting role. If McClain acheives all of his roster bonuses, the deal could be worth up to 1.1 million adding up to 400,000 in bonuses. That may not sound like much as far as NFL contract bonuses are concerned, but when you consider that the main contract is only worth $700,000 and the incentives come close to doubling the deal, it is a significant amount.

This is a pretty good deal for both sides. the Ravens have absolutely zero guaranteed dollars going to McClain so they cant get burned by him and McClain lands in a defense as close to his college defense as possible and in a situation where he can redeem himself as a person and as a player.

Regarding his original rookie contract, apparently he lost quite a bit of money due to his previous issues.

Rolando McClain's 2012 suspension voids guaranteed money - Silver And Black Pride

If you thought the Raiders cutting Rolando McClain was good news, you're going to love this. As it turns out, according to Joel Corry of the National Football Post, there was language in McClain's contract that voided all remaining guaranteed money should he be suspended for conduct.

Last season he was indeed suspended for two games for conduct detrimental to the team which means his remaining $3.635 million in previously guaranteed money is now voided. This brings his dead money against the cap from its previously assumed figure of $10.895 million down to $7.26 million - just $585k more than his 2013 cap hit would have been had he remained on the roster.

Basically what this means is it the cost of cutting him is negligible compared to keeping him. But keeping him would have been far more costly to the team dynamic and you can't put a price on that. That said, actual monetary value is nice as well. In this case, for Rolando McClain, it was literally payback time.

It isn't like he stabbed to death two people with a knife. :D

I'm actually surprised he hasn't been released yet today. Reports were that the Ravens had him on a one strike and you are out policy. This would be presumably that 'one strike'. I expect he will still be released sooner rather than later regardless, but it will be intriguing to see if the Ravens go against that supposed policy and keep him around for camp competition.

The fact that he would be exposed to waivers at the minimal contract given to him by Baltimore may play a part into it as well, or they're just gathering all of their facts before ultimately giving him the axe.
